I am reading The Spice Must Flow by Ryan Britt which is a kind of loving fan history of the Dune books and media. In it, I learn Herbert got $2,295 for the serialized first part of the first book published in Analog. That’s like $22k today and wow.

So many fun details about the two attempts to make the book into a film before Lynch’s — and before Star Wars. I only knew about Jodorowsky’s which sounds like it would have gone poorly even if visually amazing.

The SyFfy miniseries was good and the miniseries of Children of Dune is very good. Well, the casting and acting was very good. The production values, well, I watched it a couple weeks ago on my hdtv and hi def does it no favors. Acting is still really good though.

I think you’re the only person I know who loves the Lynch Dune. People like me who read and loved the book before seeing the movie came out of the theater saying “What the f was that?” and people who hadn’t read the book came out of the theatre saying “What the f was that?”

You can get the blu ray of both miniseries from Amazon.

(And this is why I buy physical media.)

Me, super enthused to be 55 today.

(Spoiler: I am actually having a pretty good day)

@scalzi I got 59 yesterday. Went for a 30 mile bike ride.

It’s not just Marvel and Star Wars that have too much Stuff for me to keep up with. The Star Trek novels got away from me a couple decades ago and I never even tried with the Star Wars eu.

How to know your DVD player is too old:

  1. All the DVDs are playing in sepia tone. (Not kidding.)
  2. You still own a DVD player.

I have to say, I don't even remember how old this thing was, but the Mrs felt kind of judged when she wanted to watch her Pride and Prejudice tonight.

So over on Bluesky it was discovered that some people were getting usernames with slurs (racial and otherwise) in them and a lot of other people were, and are, upset that Bluesky allowed that (Bluesky doesn’t anymore). Given that Mastodon is federated/distributed how does it handle that sort of thing? If the instance I was on allowed me to be horribly-offensive@example.com what would, or could, Mastodon as a whole do about it?

Today’s looking like a great day to ride out to Purcelleville for barbecue and ice cream. Mid-80s, sunny, light breeze.

Apparently an American professor suggested adding a pinch of salt to a cup of tea. The US Embassy in London has stepped up to repair the damage.

The Danny Westneat of economics bloggers thinks he’s great despite the absurd autocratic tech fascist cosplay. https://newrepublic.com/article/180487/balaji-srinivasan-network-state-plutocrat

This article is just wild and yet another reminder that the top folks “in tech” are often not wise, thoughtful or caring.

In addition to hating Cmake I’m beginning to seriously doubt the utility of git.

Things that were relatively easy to do in Turbo C++ on MS-DOS 30 years ago are difficult in Linux today.

Hurt my back somehow. Don't know what happened, just woke up yesterday and cannot bend or twist it without excruciating pain. Didn't do any unusual exercise or lifting, didn't feel it go, just woke up & found I couldn't do my normal exercises.

Substack has a Nazi problem. So does Mastodon. In both cases you usually have to go looking for it, which is miles better than Facebook or Twitter.

Any place that doesn’t have heavy moderation is going to have a Nazi problem. And an Islamophobia problem. And an antisemitism problem.

Haven’t seen too many Nazis on Bluesky yet, but it’s going to open up soon…. And have to find a way to monetize the users if it’s going to stay in business.

More KitchenAid talk.

Modern appliances are rarely built to last. They could learn something from the KitchenAid stand mixer. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2024/02/kitchenaid-stand-mixer-durability/677524/?gift=lXYKxj_TVbvBJumoueZhMGhVEVFWAzdznnls_YUKo6g
