its shabbat but i need to get this off my chest before i chill a bit.
it is a clear sign of a society in decline when blatant antisemitism is both normalized, ignored and at times casually excused across the world.
i dont know if people realize this but a pandora's box has been opened that is nearly impossible to close. you have given fascists power that they will take as far as they possibly can.
this is a direct warning to the antisemites of the fediverse and the world, especially those engaging in antisemitism whilst being in marginalized communities of their own.
you are not punching up. you are not standing against a powerful group of people. you are not standing against your oppressors. you are actually actively giving your oppressors power.
this does not end with jews. it never does. remember that, especially when you ignore or question jews who attempt to point out antisemitism when they see it.
@carnage4life Hypocrites no doubt, but it does underscore the point that a remote worker sitting in the U.S. will struggle to compete with a remote worker sitting in Mexico.
Last night I was talking to my wife and said “I think I’m down to my baseline level of stress.” Her response was that it’s sad I have a baseline level of stress.
Do other people not live with a constant baseline of stress? I thought this was normal.
A fascinating thing about Apple is that the company doesn’t believe in data analytics. The combination of its stance on privacy and its belief in product design decisions made by people with good taste means even basic things like usage data aren’t tracked.
It explains a lot.
The excerpt is taken from this article and is also consistent with the experiences of ex-Apple employees that have been shared with me
@carnage4life I think it goes even deeper. Apple sometimes seem to complete fail to analyse core uses cases. The clearest example I can think of iCloud desktop syncing. When this feature was launched people complained that they lost files between 2 macs. Apple responded that that wasn’t the intended use case. A design centric approach isn’t sufficient for the complexities of a networked service.
It’s obvious in hindsight that the EU creating new content moderation regulations for the biggest websites on the internet would apply to porn sites not just Twiter or Facebook.
Hard to imagine that their trust & safety teams can keep up or even exist.
Facebook's content-moderation machinery lying to its users about a post--then wiping an entire site's links off that platform as well as off Threads, followed by Meta bulk-deleting other sites' links--is a slow pitch over the plate to everybody who wants to break up Meta. Even if none of this apparent control-freakery was deliberate. https://www.pcmag.com/news/facebook-really-really-doesnt-want-you-to-read-this-one-story
Maybe it's because I'm a naturalized U.S. citizen, but when people threaten to withhold their vote in protest I can't help but wonder what the actual fuck they think they're accomplishing by a) demoting themselves into non-citizen status and b) announcing their asinine decision
The root of Apple's recent success Apple to use dominance of the iPhone to push for dominance elsewhere (see Pay, Watch, AirPods). Even then it's still shockingly bold that Apple told car manufacturers that the only way to keep CarPlay is if they let Apple take over the dash.
Mastodon is my primary social media, and there’s a lot I dig about it. But if there’s one thing I’d like to change, it’s the way people say THIS IS A CRISIS RIGHT NOW AND IT’S THE MAIN CRISIS AND IF YOU DON’T DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW YOU’RE BAD AND WRONG!!!
Know what? It’s your crisis. Do what you think is right. Stop judging others for having different priorities, political or otherwise. Quit putting everything in black and white, absolute terms. It’s exhausting, and nobody can live like that.
Microsoft staff member who was red teaming Copilot has taken incredible career risks by publicly whistleblowing, which resulted in MS finally blocking Copilot from generating images like children with guns etc.
Has there been a bigger mirage in tech than self driving cars?
Hundreds of billions spent chasing a dream based on compelling demos from over a decade ago with nothing to show for it besides slightly better cruise control and Waymo rides that are more curiosity than utility.
@theogrin@carnage4life Yup, that's why I tell engineers as an engineering manager that they should always work on the parts of the project that are unknown, or that they have never done before.
Get a working prototype first. Only then worry about all the good practices stuff. That makes it easier to really know when you're 90% done. Then "90% done" means "I need to add unit tests and document"
(And don't let the suits see the prototype so it doesn't get shipped)
So, here's a new one. I just received an empty shipping envelope. The post office happily tracked it, and confirmed I received it. Origin is apparently a printing company in Minnesota.
But it's an empty bag. The adhesive strip is still in place, so it's not a case of something falling out - it doesn't seem like anything was ever there.
And I can't even figure out what was supposed to be in it. I'm not expecting any packages...
