[PROJECT] Seeking Lemmy Architects/Developers

I am the CTO for an early-stage FinTech startup, and am looking to connect with architect-level developers who have managed their own self-hosted instance of Lemmy to help stand up a standalone, non-federated instance on a cloud provider such as AWS or Azure. This would be paid work, can be part-time to fit your schedule, and...

wizjenkins,

Actually he needs a developer to disable federation. It's on be l by default and to my knowledge there is no way to disable it.

wizjenkins,

Hot and active are currently broken and will show stale content. It's a Lemmy thing not a Jerboa thing. I'm hoping they fix this in the upcoming version that's in testing right now.

wizjenkins,

I'll plug my own podcast, Find the Path. We get a lot of feedback that people really like our roleplay and how we aren't a "comedy" podcast. We have a few different shows that cover different genres. We play Pathfinder 1st and 2nd edition but you don't need to know the rules to enjoy the show.

I recommend starting with Hell's Rebels since it's our most polished public show. Link to it all is on our website https://find-path.com

wizjenkins,

Not really unless you want to hide the file names. Those are sniffable with FTP alone.

But SFTP is so good now I just use it for everything.

wizjenkins,

Cloudflare can hide your IP address. It's easy to set up and free. I use that for all my self-hosted stuff.

wizjenkins,

Not built-in to Lemmy, but you could archive backups of the code, pictures, db files, etc. using something like SyncThing, which keeps two folders on two machines up to date constantly.

For the database I'd back it up to a file then sync that since it can be messy syncing it otherwise.

[Resolved] Question About Cloudflare and Federation

Hello, I've been trying to setup an instance and have been running into an issue with federation. Despite having federation enabled (in the site admin panel), I can't seem to fetch or load content from other instances. I've checked the wiki and verified the system time, internet connectivity, and backend availability (via curl)....

wizjenkins,

I run behind Cloudflare and that's definitely not the problem. I had something similar when I was setting up and it was nginx not passing the true IP to Lemmy so it was hitting limits on requests from a single IP address.

wizjenkins,

There are a few I found in Github here: https://github.com/topics/lemmy-bot. This one looks like it's a pretty generic bot: https://github.com/SleeplessOne1917/lemmy-bot

There is an API for Lemmy, though the easiest way to make a bot would be to use one of the official libraries to talk to Lemmy: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy#libraries

wizjenkins,

HIya! I jump around a lot but today I started playing Warhammer 40K Space Marine again in preparation for the release of the sequel. Before that I'm working through Daemon x Machina to scratch the Armored Core itch I have waiting for AC6.

wizjenkins,

Honestly it runs like native. Only thing I had to do is set the resolution in the options to not be 4:3 and instead be 16:9 and it runs flawlessly.

What are the biggest upgrades/fixes that you would like to see done to Lemmy?

For me its having a single instance that indexes all the communites to which all other instances can then pull that information from so when I go searching for communities the I’ll have access to every single one with needing to post the entire URL in the search bar

wizjenkins,

Yeah my #1 issue is how hard it is to find communities to follow. I think it's why so many communities are just started on lemmy.ml since it has the best chance to get users on there or Beehaw.

ASUS ROG Ally Updated Review (30 Days Later) (www.youtube.com)

Retro Game Corps has just posted a 30 day review of the Ally. As someone who has pre-ordered I found it quite interesting. As expected, the major down side to this device is the battery. Fortunately, my main reason for purchasing this is to do some gaming on my commute to work. As I'm only on the subway for 25 min, this should...

wizjenkins,

I'm wondering if Valve got a patent on that. That would explain why literally no one has ever done trackpads on a controller.

wizjenkins,

No for one simple reason: I have a wife. We like to experience content together (watching movies/TV, playing games). None of which I can do without not one but two of these things. No thanks.

How has ur lemmy experience been so far?

Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...

wizjenkins,

Jerboa also doesn't do push notifications like the desktop does. So for moderation or messaging it's not super useful since I don't know if I have new applications or messages I should respond to.

That might be a limitation of Lemmy or the app (I'm not sure if it supports push notifications at all)

wizjenkins,

I think this idea is great but the discovery of instances for a new user is "what is the Lemmy site showing me" which is almost all larger instances.

wizjenkins,

I could see a good use case for having at least a centralized, cross instance search where the instances will send up community information to the service and then the service shares it out with everyone. Rather than make a new community on my instance I could find the active community and federate it.

Then again the same thing happens on Reddit for popular topics. Like when a new game is announced there might be 5 people trying to start the subreddit for it.

wizjenkins,

Heya I made a community for that just today! https://lemmy.wizjenkins.com/c/pathfinder1e

wizjenkins,

You can post my URL into your Lemmy instance search box and it will add it to the list of communities on your server. Super unintuitive since it doesn't show you that it did that, but I discovered that doing that or getting a post on a community and posting that in the search would let you subscribe to the community.

Honestly community discovery is a super pain point right now. If I hadn't set up my own instance I don't know if I would have easily figured it out.

wizjenkins,

Hmm that is odd. I wonder is that is some slowness in lemmy.ml since they are overloaded causing the federation to slow down. The server can be set to have a limit of federation workers, so if all of those are busy getting updates from servers it might not show up.

That's a guess though since I haven't dug into the codebase and there aren't really any architecture diagrams of how Lemmy is constructed.

wizjenkins,

I'm huge into Pathfinder, both because I have a podcast playing it and because they have amazing pre-written adventures. Those are great for me since I don't have any time to homebrew.

wizjenkins,

I love Battle tech video games but have never gotten to play the TTRPG. I've also wanted to try Lancer which is also mecha-themed but haven't found a group.

wizjenkins,

Lancer is on my list to try. I read the rulebook and I appreciate how they pull from a lot of different Mecha sources so it can feel however you like mech stuff best.

wizjenkins,

Sign me up for the VTT. My ADHD is too bad for PbP lol

wizjenkins,

I'm GMing Quest for the Frozen Flame currently. It's a super fun AP so far. We're in the last third of the first book.

wizjenkins,

Oh yeah a Helm chart for Lemmy would be sick! Some of the more popular instances are in definite need of it from what I've seen.
