Celebrating the majesty, the mystery, the comedy and the catastrophe of PDFs....mostly the latter two. Opinions not even mine.

Get Ready for the Great Bake Off at 2024!

Submissions for a bake-off tool demo are due June 30.

While they'd welcome any file donation, they'd love contributions of signed PDFs, metadata datasets, and files with non-Latin character encoding and non-printing characters.

This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/

Here's a fun AI story: a security researcher noticed that large companies' AI-authored source-code repeatedly referenced a nonexistent library (an AI "hallucination"), so he created a (defanged) malicious library with that name and uploaded it, and thousands of developers automatically downloaded and incorporated it as they compiled the code:

The presence of multiple images inside a file can have unexpected consequences for digital preservation workflows. So how can we identify such files?

Some thoughts and suggestions in my latest blog post on multi-image TIFFs, subfiles and image file directories:

I frequently have to deal with files that contain nested PDFs (which Adobe marketed as "PDF Portfolios").

They open fine in pdf.js in Firefox, but not in macOS Preview. They are just PDFs that have one page telling the user to download and use Adobe Acrobat (no way, fuck that), and then a bunch of attachments.

They're worse in every way than just distributing a zip/tarball of PDFs. Here's a 20 line Python script (with a nix-shell shebang) to unwrap 'em.
