I didn’t super like the Apple ad, but I also don’t get the outrage. My interpretation was “compresses all the tools into the iPad”, but I agree that the shown destruction was too much. But… that’s basically all there is to say.

Also, looks like the ad worked when people are talking about it. 🙃

My twelve days away from “work work” end after the weekend, but my stress levels are still at 11.

I’m so bad at relaxing these days. Even if I don’t do anything or do enjoyable things (Hiking, Lego, watching TV), it’s all stressful.

I don’t know what to do, and I guess this is all burnout-consequences still after many years.

sigh, exhausted

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@TSindelar I already only do 4 days a week (plus the stuff in my “free time”, but that doesn’t count, right 😂) – I think it’s mostly structure and type of work. A lot is currently open-ended, and so I need to keep stuff in my head more instead of closing it out. But yeah, I try to do less where possible.

@roblen Danke dir!

@Anneke I really envy people who can get energy from exhausting themselves. We did a quite easy hike, all things considered, two days ago and I lost all energy since then.

Doing what I like to do is always good. And I do that. But there’s so much!

a11y friends - I've been thinking about "ffconf" and how it reads out as a single word (rather than "FF Conf"). The visual brand is "ffconf" but on a screenreader I want it to read out differently.

I thought I could use aria-label, but VO on macos is still seeming to just say it as a single word.

Is there something I should be doing?

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar
yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@rem So, the text is “ffconf”, which you want screen readers to know and then you want a different visual? I think you want to use an image then? I don’t think I understand. The information that it is written as one word is information that users with assistive technologies should or at least can have.

Everyone seems fine with their Apple Music profile leaking the data of if they have kids or not.
Like, no one without kids is going to have ‘The best of Elmo’ listed.

We used to have 14 halogen bulbs at 14 watts in the ceiling fixures in this appartment. They are built in and I am not the largest fan of them because they create a weird spotlight light.

That said, I just finished replacing them with 3 and 5 watt LED bulbs.

And while we have them never on at once, that means that the energy they need went from 196 watts to about 56 watts.

(The 3W are less bright than the 5W/14W but I vastly prefer their light. I don’t need to be in stadium lighting.)

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@shadowspar We have them in the kitchen, too. And it means that there are four spots with lights, and usually your shadow is obscuring whatever you do 😂 I have a LED strip on a smart switch underneath the roof window/above the sink, otherwise it would be impossible to see there in the dark.

I need to invest in those under-cabinet LED lights at some point.

There was an interesting question in the chat I wanted to surface.

Say your site styles are responding to the prefers-contrast: less media query. Must they still conform to the relevant 4.5:1 and 3:1 contrast ratios when the media query is active?

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@ben @sarajw @scottohara Unsurprisingly, Scott is correct. 😃

Of course 3:1 and 4.5:1 is already at the “low contrast” end of the spectrum, so going much lower might not be useful. The idea is more that you look at high contrast colors >12:1 and lower their contrast.

LOL “Just using AI should give a good first draft for a German WCAG 2.2 translation.”

Sure. It’s not that there is a lot of established verbiage and stuff. And it needs to precisely reflect the nuance and inaccuracies of the original.

Translating a spec is serious business.

“We use hurzpurz 72 and snomdrum 98 to build this website really fast. It was easy to work with and what a great site did we relaunch!!”

“But it’s not accessible, is it?”

“…”

Every inaccessible relaunch is a missed opportunity. Inaccessible relaunches must stop. Now.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

"The entire experience feels just like a MacBook"

Seriously what is the point then?

Why would anyone not just get the laptop that has a lot more apps for it and an operating system that doesn't suck for multitasking?

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@samf @thomasfuchs Same. I am actually quite happy to use my iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard as my Leisure Computer while using my MacBook Pro for work stuff. The iPad works great for portrait reading, touch games, as second screen, and for the occasional handwritten note. Annotating screenshots is also something that I rather do on the iPad than on the Mac.

yatil,
@yatil@yatil.social avatar

@thomasfuchs @samf I think you underestimate how the iPad Pros are “halo cars” for them. Yeah, the use cases for the high-end might be contrived, but I’m sure there are people who grew up with touch screens that prefer iPad workflows more than I do.
