Reply here with your burning WCAG 2.2 questions. I hope to create some articles or videos answering them as best as possible. 🙂

Thanks to the person cutting down trees or running some other very loud motor (?) very loudly at 8:45am in the morning on a Saturday.

I lived near a busy street (cars, not people) in Germanys eight-largest city and in the middle of Vienna’s 8th district (in a dorm) and there was less noise than in this 8k people town.

It’s mind-boggling. Looking forward to the people mowing their lawn again, they are missing from the picture…

😞😮‍💨

Oh no, what happened to contrast-ratio.com?

Any good contrast calculator pages around that don’t load a load of images and also concentrate on WCAG 2 contrast?

Is there a good overview on the ARIA roles that overwrite their contents when aria-label is used (button, a,…) and those who do not (nav, region,…)? I looked into the ARIA standard, but didn’t find it.

I love waiting for stuff that is already loaded.

Safari on the left super responsive, zero delay. Safari Technology Preview on the right, it takes like half a second until the text is in place.

Of course, the transitions also don’t support reduced motion settings, so they are a great additional way to make your users feel sick. There are no website settings to turn them off.

(CW: Video and video in the linked post are potentially vestibular triggers.) https://front-end.social/@bramus/112252063739648992

Video is split screen, klicking on content on the left reveals it without delay. On the right, an animation is triggered that takes about half a second. You just need to wait until the animation is settled to interact with it. And it is a full-page animation, so easily a vestibular trigger.

First time I hear of the (apparently proposed) focusgroup attribute which lets developers apparently choose how they think focus should go.

Can we please stop this? Just make sure your focus order is good in the HTML and you’re good. We already have people too much interfere in assistive tech.

“WCAG does not improve UX because it only looks at conformance” is written in a LinkedIn post that I need to subtoot.

Do we really want a standard to define the User Experience?

(Also conformance or at least fixing the worst bugs is an important step towards a better user experience. How would it help if we hadn’t WCAG? Do we think websites would be better? Why?)

I think we need a standardized price list across companies for accessibility reviews and audits. Like the effort per screen/page is calculated and then multiplied with a complexity factor and a factor that reflects the company/experience.

We also need to work on giving great, consistent reviews to clients. I think we need to work together on this one against the “AI”/overlay competition.

Being able to harvest the energy from light and wind is the closest thing we have to magic.

We literally make energy out of something that is practically immaterial.

“Wow, AI can now describe images!” == “Wow, image interpretation algorithms have now stolen enough data from people who have always cared about alternative text, so that I can add mediocre descriptions to pretend to care.”

(Edit: It’s totally good that this technology exists for users when no alternative text exists. It’s problematic when it’s used in lieu of writing proper alternative text in the first place.)

Will we honestly talk about the trickery in the “Be My Eyes Accessibility with GPT-4o“ video? Like the taxi that uses the signal way before the passenger signal and actually basically passed the signalling passenger before the signal and still coming to a stop? Or that we don’t see any real processing time? Or that the voice is clear despite standing in London with speakers on? (1/3)

So, another W3C Community Group defining a “baseline” for available features on the web where accessibility is not mentioned.

Can screen reader and other assistive technologies interact with these features? Who cares! It’s the baseline now.

input type="date" is “baseline” for years and completely inaccessible.

WCAG 2 gets a task force to address GitHub issues! Of course, that task force cannot do any changes to the standard, so why even bother? Maybe because it looks bad to abandon the most successful W3C standard that is not CSS for a new version with hundreds of unaddressed issues?

Alibi Task Force it is!

(Sorry, I wished I could be more optimistic. But I can’t.)

I mean, I understand wanting to do a nice utility knife, but $95 is ridiculous. I have a cheap one with an ergonomic handle for a tenth of the price. 🤷🏼‍♂️ $20 or $25, sure. But $95?

If you say “I will not change my climate behavior until <Rich Person> stops flying in a private jet”, someone will point at your behavior which releases more carbon than they and say “until they change, I won’t change”. And there will be someone pointing at them who has an even lower impact.

Yes, privat jets must be banned. But everyone must change their behavior. Who releases more, must do more. But this is on everyone.

Because, if everyone is willing to change, we can ground those m-fers.

This was a fun Codepen to put together (no documentation) for coding a shipping status indicator. I don’t get my hands on code often, so this was a neat opportunity to do nesting and media query short syntax, and combine it with the currentcolor keyword and do some pseudo elements shenanigans.

Like blogs, the Fediverse does not need to win. This is not about having the most users. Or making the most money. This is about interested people finding and connecting. It doesn’t really matter how large it is. It never mattered how many blogs there have been. But each blog is valid, even if it is only read by a handful people. And so is the Fediverse. People publishing, connecting.

Who do I have to talk to to stop this from shipping? If users have no way to overwrite the user-hostile behavior, this feature should not ship. Users should always be able to show all content on the page.

DO NOT USE THIS. https://front-end.social/@stefan/111334648111748288

The more I discuss with people who are invested into accessibility certificates, the more I think they need to go.

They do exactly what they want (separate the market between “good” and “bad” accessibility people). I think it’s not good if one organization has the power to determine in which group you belong.

This is what people have campaigned for: Safari is not supposed to have an advantage over other browsers. PWA support across browsers is a major rewrite, so removing it makes sense – at least short term. (I’m pretty sure the Safari team wants PWAs back ASAP.)

Turns out actions have (unintended) consequences. https://bne.social/@james/111894705653856110

I have a couple of talks lying around, collecting dust (because I’m excluded/self-excluding from in-person conferences). I wished there was a way to do mini-Kickstarters for them, with the goal to create polished videos out of them that would be released for free or comparably cheap.

Anyone know a good system that could work for this? Kickstart & Co. seems a lot of overhead.

I have a button which has the visible label and accessible name “>>”. It is announced as ”greater greater, button” by VoiceOver. I guess that technically meets WCAG 4.1.2? Feels like it should fail something, but I don’t think it does.

I think the most annoying thing about “AI” in accessibility (apart from the deceptive marketing) is that we use it to allow developers to create bad code and ten attempt to fix it “in post”. It’s the clear signal that making developer’s lives easier is more important than ensuring baseline accessibility.

Ah, a new accessibility widget that breaks its own website’s layout when you go into “dyslexia” mode, at least in my Safari. Brilliant!

I mean, really, just make sure your own websites work with it, otherwise you are just really embarrassing.
