I just know that I’m going to block an entire instance one day by mistake, probably a good one, and it’ll take me weeks to figure it out. Every single app should ask “are you sure?” Then “do you actually know what you’re doing?” “How many fingers am I holding up?” “Are you double-triple dog sure that— fuck it, go ahead, see if I care that you appear to be in self-destruct mode”

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@JoParkerBear @HCBunny You can go directly to their insurance URL in a browser and navigate to the local feed from the main "About" page. Usually.

If they don't provide access for whatever reason and I hear negative things about them, though, I don't bother to give them the benefit of the doubt. This isn't a problem with the Mastodon instances but other platforms do this and it's usually a big red flag in and of itself.

The main thing wrong with NAACP's Florida "travel warning" is that it doesn't include a whole bunch of other states where governments and (probably) a majority of the people are hostile to basic human rights. Because there are a lot of them at this point.

@dangillmor Most (if not all) of the other states aren't major tourist destinations like Florida is.

In lieu of my normal week ahead summary, I take a deeper dive into the debt ceiling crisis. Why are we negotiating in the first place? What if a deal happens? What if a deal doesn’t happen? Can Biden save us? All that and more in today’s piece. https://statuskuo.substack.com/p/the-week-in-review-focus-on-the-debt?sd=pf

    There, that should do it. We'll see if my phone stops bugging me with the upcoming apocalypse(s) I have no control over. I also disabled sports settings. Man, I wish I had known; I could have disabled that earlier.

    Some predictions I'll probably regret making later:

    • I feel like we will end up defaulting on our debt in June. I know we've been down this road before and we've always pulled a last minute deal but this feels different. The US House is under the control of an insurrectionist party and they are out for blood.

    • I don't think Biden will declare the 14th or "mint the coin". Both scenarios are fantasies.

    • I think the situation will last for several days at least. Longer maybe.

    zalasur,
    @zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

    Well, we're past the soft deadline and things... are not looking good. I've suspected the Republicans are purposefully heading to default not as a negotiating tactic, but as an end goal. This is the new policy for them. Default now, Default forever.

    zalasur,
    @zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

    @mjf_pro I was about to say that if that's our best case scenario then we are truly f***ed since those cases could take weeks or months to wind through the courts, and by then the very government itself could become destablized.

    Which is, I think, the goal.

    zalasur,
    @zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

    From my reading of the facts this is the last week to hammer out a deal before a default becomes unavoidable (there just simply won't be enough time to hammer out any sort of legislation that can be passed before the 1st of June). Basically we'll know by end of day Thursday if a default will happen or not, even if the exact date isn't quite set yet.

    I tried to play chatGPT in a game of chess. I wasn't even sure it could do it... and I was right. Interestingly, it fakes it for a good solid 20 moves or so before it goes off the rails and forgets it no longer has pieces that were captured three moves ago. I even tried helpfully telling it what the current board position was and have it another chance but it only seemed to become more confused.

    Oh well, back to playing stockfish and getting my ass handed to me. 😅

    zalasur,
    @zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

    It's with noting that chatGPT doesn't know how to play chess so much as it simply repeats chess moves it found on the internet. A neural net specifically trained with the rules of chess might fare differently. It might also help if the inputs and outputs weren't free-form text fields.

    Any way, it was an interesting experiment and it only serves to reinforce my belief that LLMs are not these super intelligent agents set to replace humanity any time soon (and probably not ever).
