YouTube: 5 ads the norm now?

For context I’m in the US. The last time I used YouTube without an ad blocker, there were 2 ads back to back, and way too frequently. I tried watching on my PlayStation tonight, and not only are they more frequent, they’ve increased in quantity by 150%. It’s also very common for the last ad to last 2 minutes to over an...

If you're very bothered by the ads, instead of an adblocker you can try out an Ad-blocking DNS. Personally, I use noads.libredns.gr

This will allow them to see all your data though, so I recommend using this method with a reputable VPN.

Basic, but Ubuntu. It's got snaps which are slow and generally suck, plus Canonical

9 days after writing in defence of a Free Palestine, Paul Biggar is dropped from his director role at CircleCI (hachyderm.io)

His original post , titled I can’t sleep, is some brilliant writing. When we talk about the chilling effect that criticism of Israel creates in industries everywhere (including ours) this is what that looks like.

Between the recent breach and the clear sentiment behind their staff, I really don't know why anyone chooses CircleCI over GitHub / GitLab Actions.

Disclaimer: I use kbin 99% of the time.

That said, I love using Connect when I use Lemmy

What Would You Like To See Improved in GNU/Linux?

Hey guys, I’m just an ordinary dev looking for something to work on. While messing around with my hobby projects, I couldn’t help but notice that under the surface, there are a lot of places that the libre desktop can be improved. I’d like to take on your suggestions on what I should seriously consider working on and...

Man, just the "normies" user experience in general.

I've had so many issues from the start, even on "beginner friendly" distros. Hell, I'm a software engineer by trade - I literally use WSL2 every day for my job - but there are some things the OS should just do.

Prime example: wifi connectivity (er, just connectivity in general - Bluetooth included). It seems like every distro neglects this part to some degree. I've tried Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Linux Mint, Kinoite, countless others - but it seems like every one either has some form of Bluetooth connectivity issue (a la Kinoite not detecting my Bluetooth headphones) or a straight up wifi issue (like Ubuntu, Lubuntu and Linux Mint ALL not connecting to Panera WiFi on a wiped 2012 MacBook Pro - it was because Panera has a popup to accept wifi terms, btw, which is extremely common. Starbucks was broken too).

It's that sort of stuff that prevents people from staying on Linux. People DO go to internet cafes to hang out and surf the web. It's a helluva deal breaker that I need to turn on my phone's hotspot just to connect to some Internet and then deal with LTE speeds. And as for the argument of "well that's super old hardware" - it's prime hardware that people will try Linux on and get pissed off.

Also, Nvidia support. It's one of the most popular graphics card options - it's a deal breaker that it doesn't work out of the box on a lot of distros. Never ran into this myself, but just scroll here for a bit to see how prevalent it is.

I REALLY want to daily Linux but man, these issues prevent it (even now that I've moved on from the MacBook). If you really wanna help Linux grow, fix these problems and / or work on improving the "non-technical" user experience. You shouldn't need to know what KDE is to use your desktop, nor should you need to Google like 15 things to get thru the installer with certainty.

I know this will get a lot of hate, and I really really want to love Linux, but I've been burned often so I'm skeptical.

I'm hoping (more than likely in vain) that we can have the opportunity to do some of the wackier stuff seen in SimCity: Societies. By that, I mean I would love to craft an authoritarian police state, a beautiful pagoda-filled village or a Disney-esque paradise town.

SimCity: Societies was very bad in a lot of aspects (game froze all the time, roads were awful and it was massively unbalanced) but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it at all when it comes to city building. I just wanna make clown schools and have a bunch of free-roaming clowns, damnit.

Only reason I don't use Ecosia is because you can't search for "Within the past year". Which is really necessary when you're a programmer

This is cool, but there appears to be no issues tab in GitHub which is a bit of a red flag.

Everyone in kbin is handsome and / or gorgeous! Everyone in Lemmy is a Lemmy user 😛 /s

In all seriousness, kbin is developed by Ernest who is an extremely devoted and trustworthy dev. Lemmy is developed by CCP shills. That's the reason I chose kbin.

kbin is also getting steadily updated and I have a very good feeling about its stability and featureset in a few months taking a look at the GitHub.

It's also very nice not having random downvotes for literally no reason. Some comments on Reddit would just end up getting a random downvote first, preventing it from getting any form of meaningful traction. No idea why, my takes weren't exactly spicy there, but here that doesn't seem to happen!

They ARE different sites, but they're federated. Basically, sites on the Fediverse (the nickname for the group of sites which share this functionality) can communicate. So, for example, Mastadon, Lemmy and kbin are all on the Fediverse, so they can communicate (when sites on the Fediverse are able to communicate, people say they are "federated").

Let me give you an example!

Say you're on Mastadon and you post something. That post will be visible to users on Lemmy and kbin, and people from Lemmy and kbin can comment and interact with it (since they all share the same protocol). Lemmy / kbin users will not have the 400 character limit Mastadon has, but they will still be able to interact.

Same thing if you make a post on Lemmy - on the whole, the Fediverse will be able to see your posts. Same with your comment here (Lemmy users can see it. For an example of a comment from another site, check out Stux's comment below - they are from Mastadon)

They are all distinct apps with distinct features, they just can communicate with each other. Imagine it like Twitter and Facebook could see each others' posts.

Now, some instances of Lemmy and kbin (basically, some servers of them) are blocked from federation with others on the Fediverse (aka, recently Beehaw - a Lemmy instance - blocked another Lemmy instance) but that is on a per-instance basis.

Welcome over (from kbin, I can see and comment on your comment because kbin and Lemmy are federated with each other and can talk!)

In the US, public transit is almost universally unavailable. If it is available, it's a massive luxury (or strictly necessary, like NYC).

I would say it's sad, but it really is for the best (at least for me). kbin and Mastodon (haven't tried Lemmy) seem to be super promising and fill that same need for me. So far, I'm feeling incredibly at-home on the fediverse
