He was very obviously thrown out by israel

Anti-Semitism was generally not regarded as a big problem in the Labour Party before Jeremy Corbyn’s election as leader in September 2015.

Mr Corbyn and his allies on the left had spent decades campaigning for Palestinian statehood, in contrast with the more nuanced position taken by many of his predecessors.

Under his leadership, there was an influx of new members, many of whom were vocal critics of Israel and who believed the UK, along with the US, should be tougher towards Israel, especially regarding its policies towards the Palestinians and its building of settlements in the occupied territories.

Sir Keir sacked his shadow education secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey in June 2020, saying she had shared an article containing an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

Mrs Long-Bailey had retweeted an interview with actor and Labour supporter Maxine Peake, later saying she had not meant to endorse all aspects of the article.

In the article, Ms Peake discussed the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, saying: “The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services.”

You can see where this is going. Also the claim from Ms Peake is factually correct.

Risk,

Corbyn was absolutely shit smeared by the press; if you get people to look at Corbyn’s Labour policies in isolation, I reckon you’d be hard pressed to find someone that disliked them.

I wonder why privately held media would do this…

allthat,

I love seeing them climb down trees head first. First time I saw this I was like “wait a second there HEAD FIRST?!” I knew about short-toed treecreepers abilities as very good climbers but European nuthatches are next level.

Breaking with people who turn out completely insane.

Which actually might cover the entire human population. No, I mean the crazy Facebook uncle kind of insane. Life is so much more pleasant when you surround yourself with people who you love or at least tolerate.

KidnappedByKitties,

Not really true, it’s part of religious shame propaganda in 12 step programs to make you more susceptible to conversion.

Might be effective in the short term, but has many other negative psychological effects.

Secular rehab programs are equally or more effective, and require no such shame or disempowerment.

Anyone else considering spoiling their ballot in the next election?

Don’t get me wrong, I will probably cave at the last minute and vote SNP again for a number of reasons. Mostly, being supportive of a number of their progressive policies that I have benefited from over the years, and also because my constituency is a two horse race between them and the Tories who I will never vote for. Though...

loobkoob avatar

I wouldn't spoil my ballot personally unless I felt every party right now was actively bad. I think there are a few things you should consider:

Some of the parties aren't necessarily the same, policy-wise or values-wise, as they were in the past. They might have the same name as they did ten years ago, but that doesn't mean everything else about them is frozen in time. Parties evolve, and you should judge them as they are now and the direction they're heading in rather than holding vendettas against them for things that aren't representative of how they are now. This is particularly important when parties have new leadership and direction - Labour, in particular, feels like quite a different party to how it was in 2019. Is it better? In some ways yes, in other ways no, I think. But whether you think it's better or not, I think it's distinct enough, and tried to distance itself enough from what it perceived as issues it had in 2019, that holding it accountable still doesn't achieve much. I don't think it's fair to blame Ed Davey's Lib Dems for Nick Clegg's coalition either (although I do think Clegg did a reasonable job of moderating the Tories during that time - things got so much worse once the Tories got full power).

I also think it's important to think of every election as a stepping stone to the future, rather than hoping for perfection to happen overnight. Taking the Labour party as an example, because they're the biggest rivals to the Tories on a national level: do I think things will be perfect if Labour get power? No. They don't necessarily represent my views on some issues, and I actively disagree with them on others. In another voting system, they probably wouldn't be my first choice. But I also think that if Labour gets in, things will move in a better direction. If I think about where I'd like things to be in ten or twenty years, Labour winning this election is probably what ensures the best (or at least most realistic) chance of getting there.

Don't let "perfect" be the enemy of "good". None of the options are perfect as far as I'm concerned. But Labour, Lib Dems, Greens and SNP are all good compared to the Tories, and doing what you can to help the one that gives the best chance of keeping the Tories out in your constituency is going to move things in a good direction. I think that having the chance to actually get rid of the Tories is not the time for apathy, also. I'd hate to see the Tories win again because the left gets complacent or apathetic, or starts splitting the vote because Starmer's Labour isn't perfect. Because do you know what else isn't perfect? Another five fucking years of Tory government. It looks like they're on their way out, but let's not fumble it at the finish line.

Get these right-wing ghouls out of power, and then write to your MP telling them how you'd like to see things change. Because chances are it'll achieve more than spoiling your ballot. Spoiling your ballot expresses that you're angry but it doesn't tell anyone why and it doesn't do anything to bring about change.

Meltrax,

Same strategy Facebook employs.

The amount of telemetry and personal data they can collect from an installed phone app is insane so they do everything they can to make you install it.

Thanks! Added to the reading list.

I read “The Colour Purple” at around 14 and it had a big impact on me. Lots of opportunities to discuss race, slavery, inequality in general.

It’s very welcoming to see LGBTQ+ characters, especially with the similarities of their liberation with non-white people.

I also read Uncle Toms Cabin around the same age which I found much harder to connect with but others in my class found that very impactful.

Good choice; this book seems to have had had a very positive impact on slavery and the dehumanisation of black people.

Despite being the root cause of a few stereotypes of black people, it is notable that the black people in the novel actually have character development throughout that breaks at least some of those stereotypes.

(Posted from an alt. account because of federation issues.)

temp_acc,

All the more reason to provide these kinds of books to people - especially young people - to educate them in many ways that the school curriculum fails to.

Just banned from Worldnews for defending Israel against Hamas terrorism

Got back to lemmy barely today, was reading worldnews and put some comments. Got banned in 20 minutes. What happened to this place? People were complaining about reddit mods and now this? You can spread antisemitic propaganda freely and we can’t even comment? Fucking hell

kava,

Can you copy paste the exchange that got you banned? I never believe people who complain about bans - they never show the full story. Usually it’s justified, although not always.

Anyhow, I will ask you a few questions.

How many Palestinians can Israel kill before it’s not self defense anymore?

Is apartheid acceptable to you? West Bank has two different court systems- one for Israelis and another for Palestinians. An Israeli teenager might get probation for the same crime that a Palestinian teenager will get 9 months.

There are roads that only Jews can use. Palestinians can get arrested without reasonable cause and be held without a trial indefinitely.

Is that OK for you?

Gaza has been under blockade for decades now. Do you think that’s ok? That a Palestinian can’t just leave?

Did you know in order to leave Gaza before Oct 7th, a Palestinian needed to apply for a special id with the government of Israel? And they needed a valid reason. And the only reason Israel would ever accept is commercial.

So for example if you wanted to visit your family member in the West Bank, you would get refused.

Do you think it’s OK for Israel to have killed tens of thousands of Palestinians before Oct 7th?

If you look at the statistics, for every 1 Israeli killed there were 20 dead Palestinians.

I think any rational person who has the capacity for independent thought and has a shred of empathy for other humans will inevitably oppose Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians.

kava,

Almost everything you said is a propaganda and barely have any truth in them

Everything I said can be sourced.

Two different court system is there because Muslims don’t want to be in the same legislation as “kuffars”

Palestinians are subject to martial law. Has nothing to do with “kuffars”.

in military court, children as young as 12 years old can be handed prison sentences, which is unlawful under the Israeli civil legal system. … all military court hearings are held in Hebrew, which many Palestinian defendants cannot understand. The judges, prosecutors, stenographers, and translators are all uniformed members of the military.

There are roads only Jews can use? That’s a myth

Israeli authorities have restricted or prohibited Palestinian travel on 41 roads and sections of roads throughout the West Bank. These roads are open to Israelis, including settlers, allowing them to travel freely on more than 400 miles of roads from which Palestinians are barred.

Source? US Gov state.gov/…/israel-golan-heights-west-bank-and-ga…

Palestinian randomly stabs Israelis, including women and children

Israelis kill 20x the number of Palestinians. Settlers commit acts of violence all the time. Would that justify treating them worse than blacks in the 1960s?

Gaza has NOT been under blockade

Israel has directly controlled Gaza’s airspace, their entire coastline, and controlled their land borders. This is the textbook definition of a blockade.

Israel blocked or limited specific types of items from going into Gaza - including construction materials. A non-exhaustive list of items

Amnesty International and other organizations reported that cement, glass, steel, bitumen, wood, paint, doors, plastic pipes, metal pipes, metal reinforcement rods, aggregate, generators, high voltage cables and wooden telegraph poles were "high priority reconstruction materials currently with no or highly limited entry into Gaza through official crossings.

It’s totally normal that Israel controls entry and exit in Gaza. Why is that a problem? I cannot enter US or EU without visa

The difference is you can actually apply for a visa to leave. Palestinians cannot leave. They cannot go to West Bank to visit family. In fact, the Israeli Supreme Court actually ruled explicitly that Palestinians living in Gaza cannot visit the other half of Palestine. It’s their country - but they can’t go there. www.gisha.org/…/Disengagement_Danger_6feb_06.pdf

Israel killed Palestinians and Palestinians killed Israelis.

The difference is exactly what you said - one side has all the power. This is a one-sided fight. It’s always been a one-sided fight. Which is why the Palestinians resort to terrorism. They have no other options, they are slowly being suffocated.

Israel is an apartheid far-right regime. You cannot deny this. Every single point you made has been addressed. I know I’m wasting my time with you, but maybe someone else will read this and learn something.

So you’re defending a country, that’s been committing a genocide on innocent Palestinians civilians for generations?

Yeah I can’t really sympathise with you on that sorry.

Supporting human rights ≠ antisemitism

I understand your frustration with not being to freely express your thoughts and how hostile ppl can be about the situation but unfortunately that’s just life on the internet sadly.

You should really educate on yourself on the whole situation cuz in actual reality, there is no good guys (cuz we can all agree that Hamas are not good ppl either and they do not represent the Palestinians people so don’t blame for them for something Hamas did) in this situation and the ppl that are affected the most are the Palestinians and the Israelis, since at the moment I’m writing this, more families and children are dying by the second and since Israel is a very nationalistic society, a lot of the citizens are sadly brainwashed into thinking the Palestinians are “second class citizens” which completely shows how much influence Israel as a country and politically, it has an influence on ppl internationally and nationally too.

Please actually educate yourself about the whole situation before making posts like this cuz it makes ppl who actually care about this to look like we’re antisemitic when that’s far from the case and it frustrates me when ppl just assume that cuz it literally doesn’t help anyone that is actually trying to help spread awareness about this and this causes further division within ppl, which is not what we need when fighting for human rights as this prevents political progress, which is the last thing Palestinians need.

tyler,

Being against Israel’s actions isn’t antisemitism. You’re literally spreading antisemitism if you think that Israel = Jewish. The government of Israel clearly does not do anything even slightly worth considering as part of Judaism, so equating the two is just you trying to win an argument that is literally indefensible unless you claim antisemitism.

MrVilliam,

Barely related, but a lot of people don’t know as much as they think they know about recycling. That symbol on the bottom of your plastic jugs, jars, etc that looks like the recycling symbol was the result of a campaign to intentionally mislead people into thinking that the containers are recyclable. Those symbols along with the number are identifiers for the types of plastic involved. Different recycling plants are equipped to process different materials, so I’m not saying that no plastic is recyclable, but you’re probably best off just assuming that your plant can’t handle your plastic. Why? Because if they can handle any plastic, it’s probably just one or two of them and you’d need to ask them to be sure, and you’d need to wash away all the food particles and remove labels and adhesive. I’ve heard that failing to do this can contaminate other material which renders that stuff unrecyclable as well, but I’m not sure that’s still true or ever was so don’t @ me on that point lol. I’m also not sure about sorting, but that could be necessary too. And after all that, it’s still very hard to recycle plastic, and you can probably only do it once or twice before it’s not usable anymore.

So what should we do with our plastic? Easy. Stop buying it. Okay, not so easy, but you can choose aluminum or glass containers instead wherever you have the choice. Any reduction is an improvement. Going a step further, see if you can’t reuse your plastic for something else before disposing. Once you’ve gotten a few uses out of it, then you can go through the process of recycling if it’s possible. I’m no genius for suggesting that, btw. That’s literally just what “reduce, reuse, recycle” is telling you to do. It’s in that order for a reason!

TED Talk complete. Hopefully most of you already knew this, but this was for the handful of people who didn’t know!

Towerofpain11,

Yes! This is my second choice. Meet you there in flannelette shirts.

GreyEyedGhost,

Remember, news typically consists of the noteworthy, not the commonplace. It still sucks if you’re the lucky one to have your privileges removed, though.

gravitas_deficiency,

Well, the fact that the previous administration - and, to this day, fully one half of our political establishment - politicized public health and vaccination sure as shit isn’t making that number smaller.

Armen12,

None of this matters, the US literally stopped caring about protecting innocent lives and has basically been green lighting this, just another massive mistake like the Arab Spring and Afghanistan and Biden is making the same stupid mistake again. I’m honestly astonished at everything I’ve been seeing, it breaks my heart

themeatbridge,

Mmm that argument would carry more weight if the video didn’t start with her instagram handle. Recording videos to improve your form doesn’t need to be shared with the public at large. While I think he was unnecessarily aggressive and threatening about it, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask people to stop filming when you’re trying to work out.

How many times have you seen an influencer zoom in on a background character supposedly checking her out, or making a stupid face, or using the equipment wrong? I don’t want to be in the background of anyone’s videos, either.

Of course, don’t threaten people. That’s not OK. Filming in the gym for public sharing should be limited to shots framed to exclusively catch you.

Pons_Aelius,

To me we only need the largest 2, anymore is silly. Move to one of them.
