Hmm , in 2020 the interest rates for buying a house was around 3.1%, now it's around 6.8%. When we're pricing people out of the ability to afford housing (interest rates going up affects rent prices too, who knew) people will be rather upset... especially given that they see little to no benefit from this "good economy" given the layoffs in certain sectors, the gas prices being over 9000, and not one, but two wars abroad where at least one of the parties in each is perfectly fine targeting civilians.

But hey, at least Google and Amazon are raking in the profits, I guess.

Where are the good political songs? (piped.video)

I feel like there are lots of parallels between the eighties and now (recession/inflation, yuppies/inequality, skin-heads/fascists, hot-cold wars etc.) but there used to be protest music! Where is that stuff now? Music that’s intelligent and outraged - like we should be!...

Diotima,

Given that Tiktok is a corporation with likely ties to a government that is not particularly fond of protest, perhaps it is not the best place to find protest music. Having said that, Muse continues to make protest music as they always have. I suppose the problem is that protest music doesn't often get included on music platforms, leaving us with a sanitized version of the musical landscape.

Saying that "Lemmy" is an echo chamber is a bit ignorant. Lemmy is a platform; it can he used to spin up an instance with whatever values you like. The fediverse is the same. So saying Lemmy is an echo chamber is a bit like boycotting wood because a politician you dislike stood on a stage to speak.

Having said that, there are instances with heavy political biases. You can block those from your instance and you can block them from you feed.

And he won't because he's 100% onboard with this, which is both disappointing and unsurprising. The only way we get better policy is to elect better candidates.

As soon as the system doesn't shitcall over anyone who isn't the anointed from the elite reds and blues, I suppose. Maybe next run of this simulated world?

Can someone explain to me why Honkai: Star Rail is treated as something other than trash? I keep seeing posts about it, all over.

It’s a free-to-play mobile gacha game. Therefore, it is trash. That point simply cannot be argued. It’s not up for debate. If you’re here to debate that point, please don’t even bother. All mobile games are trash. All free-to-play games are trash. All gacha games are trash. Again: there is no debate about that....

Did you wake up hangry or something? Your comments are... special.

Diotima,

Are you just... angry it lacks anime tiddys or something? Maybe someone can point you toward a more suitable gacha game, then.

Diotima,

Sometimes, you just have to poke the bear. ;-)

Diotima,

Funny story, my partner sent me a gacha game and I have yet to spend a dime. I play for maybe 20 minutes a week. If someone is unable to control their spending on make-believe prizes, then they have underlying issues they need to work out.

Your assertion that gacha = slavery is about the most ridiculous thing I've read all day, and I had to open Twitter.

Diotima,

So a guy registered on lemmynsfw, an instance whose users have been known to post exploitative pictures, is bitching about... gacha games. Oh wow. Wow.

Diotima,

Dude really just needs to step away from the drugs, I think.

Diotima,

Thanks! When time permits, I'll tweak it for neighboring regions.

So basically, we are expanding the scope of government oversight and surveillance to pursue a dubious policy that has a very low probability of success, to enforce immigration laws that are archaic, unnessessarily restrctive, and utterly ineffective.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

You could not. We can't even effectively defend a forward deployed base from low tech insurgents armed with dry ice and PVC tubes. That we would be capable of effectively patrolling a 2000 mile border is laughable at best.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

We can solve a good deal of the issue by enforcing labor laws against exploitative companies and making it easier to immigrate to work. Shameful that Democrats and Republicans are more or less on the same page when it comes to immigration policy.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

I suspect you have neither the sense of the scale of such a monitoring project nor an inkling as to the cost, not to mention the liklihood that it would be extremely ineffective. That is even discounting the underlying implied need to use violence against civilians because we can't get our shit together and enforce our own labor laws.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

Yes, to combat the threat of... poor people who want to work. Good look for the country.

I assure you that I have a fairly solid grasp on what we have available. But it doesn't matter; this is vote pandering and posturing by a supposed progressive who should know better.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

"Open borders is bad policy" is an emotional argument. Fact is, the economy relies on migrant workers to function. Enforcing labor laws to ensure equitable wages, taxing the income of those working would do much to solve the issue.

Or I guess we could spend trillions to use the military to fail to provide meaningful impact.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

Says the one appealing to magic, essentially? You have neither sense of scale nor scope.

"Open borders is bad policy'" is an opinion, not a fact, much like "pineapple doesn't belong on pizza." You can be against immigration all you like, but it doesn't make your opinion factual.

What IS true is that the sheer scale of a massive effort to patrol the entire southern US border is laughably impossible unless you plan on expanding the military to establish a 2000 mile long perimeter, and you intend to do so indefinitely. Good luck with that.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

Or legal crossings, which remain the easiest way to enter and stay. Enter the US for a vacation, simply... fail to go home. That neatly avoids the whole sneaking in issue entirely.

I can't say I'm surprised at this, given that Biden has never been particularly pro-immigration beyond lip service. I am, however, disappointed.

Real time strategy games are not my cup of tea. Nothing against anyone who enjoys them, understand, but they're basically exercises in who can do the clicky clicky faster. Give me a turn-based game any day... where you actually have to out-think versus out-click your opponents.

Oh, and any game that pits console players against PC players. Yes, let's put the 'stock controllers only' console players up against the PC players with $8,675,309.00 of custom equipment and every cheat they can get away with. Sounds like a reasonable plan. Overwatch, I'm looking at you.

Diotima,

I somewhat exaggerate. They can be fun, but turn based is more my style.
