A case for preemptively defederating with Threads

With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...

I came to the Threadiverse because Reddit was closing its APIs and building the walls higher around its garden.

I will be supremely disappointed if the Threadiverse collectively turns around and does the same thing.

Instances should be defederated when they do something harmful. Preemptively defederating is counterproductive, it gives Meta no incentive to do things right.

All I’ll say is that it’s not much of a “fediverse” if you just preemptively defederate from anyone trying to grow it because you’re scared of what might change. More of a “fediclub” at that point.

Really kills the “it’s like email!” metaphor when you defederaters are constantly trying to break that interoperability by stirring up FUD and blocking instances for theoretical stuff they haven’t even done yet.

It’s like email except your server admin might decide one day they don’t want you to talk to anyone who has an @gmail.com address because they don’t like Google. What fun!

RTR#27 Aggregate view, work on federation

Today, a test version of the aggregate view has been introduced on the instance. It's a mix of threadiverse and microblog formats, applying all filters, blacklists, sub filters, languages etc. After selecting *, the links to sub, mod, fav change, and navigation works within the aggregate view....

/kbin RTR#8 The update of kbin.social and plans for the near future

Today, we managed to update the main instance. Everything should slowly return to normal. Now it's time for things that will be less visible but no less important. Currently, the priority will be interactions with other instances - limiting spam, improving communication in the fediverse (including moderation) in order not to add...

Steam may soon let you hide specific games from your friends (www.eurogamer.net)

Tired of having to explain yourself every time your friends catch you firing up Hosiery Party: Wet Potato Frenzy on Steam? Well, there's some good news: Valve is reportedly readying a feature that'll let you mark specific games as "private" so you can hide your more unusual tastes from other users while still maintaining a...

German political leader speaks against ‘double standard’ in Gaza (www.workers.org)

Only unconditional support [for neocolonialism] can plausibly explain the U.S. veto of a humanitarian cease-fire in the U.N. Security Council. It is becoming abundantly clear that in the final analysis it is the United States that is preventing a two-state solution within the 1967 borders and a Palestinian state with East...

I've already discussed some of the reasons on Matrix, but today, I'll try to briefly explain what's going on here. Due to the increasing popularity of kbin, infrastructure changes, the cost of maintaining instances, and development-related priorities, I wasn't able to deliver the milestones on time, which are crucial for project funding (even though I'm really close to achieving that). I wasn't prepared for this and didn't anticipate such a delay in terms of the savings I allocated for all of this. The servers are still being maintained with the donations that came through buymycoffe, but there are additional costs like living expenses and other obligations. So, I had to take up temporary work to ensure the continued development of the project.

This year has also brought many other unexpected personal problems, as I mentioned earlier. Now, another one has been added to that list – I had to end my marriage and a fifteen-year-long relationship. While it's not a sudden decision, it's never easy, but it has turned out to be more challenging than I anticipated. Not just for me, and this time, I want to dedicate as much time as necessary to conclude the matter properly. I had to learn how to do many things from scratch, set up a new work environment, establish daily routines, and more.

So, why all these deadlines and promises?
It was probably the only way for me to accomplish at least the absolute minimum. There's a lot of my own code waiting for review on my local branches, but it's genuinely hard for me to push myself to it for now. The infrastructure also requires fine-tuning, and Piotr is helping me with that. And the days are passing by very quickly.

However, I'm almost ready to continue on this journey, so you can expect that in the near future, there will be a banner with information and the update date of the instance and release. After that, we will work on avoiding such longer development downtimes in case of my absence.

Indeed, I don’t see why people clickbait on the Fediverse where there isn’t even any advertising to be had. There’s no benefit.

I posted an article I found interesting, and I avoid editorialising titles and so posted with the actual title of the article. Clearly people here hated that, though I find the reaction pretty bizarre. Oh well, people like what they like.

The complaint from MS is not really that "Bing" shouldn't be a gatekeeper, but that Windows (which is the gatekeeper) should be able to give unfair advantages to "Bing" (or any "small" product they want)....

Microsoft is “unlikely” to dispute that its Windows platform meets the definition of a gatekeeper, but it’s arguing that Bing’s relatively small share of the search market (compared to far more popular competitor Google) could only be further diminished if it must do things like offer users access to rival search engines.

Windows being a "gatekeeper" is independent on how successful they are in their attempts to exploit their gatekeeping power.

Just because Bing is so unpopular that people don't use it even after slapping it in every possible MS product, does not justify exploiting Microsoft's success in a completely different market (the OS) as a means to give unfair advantages to one "small" product over the competition.

Windows, as a highly successful & popular product (almost a monopoly), should not be forcing ANY alternatively monetized Microsoft product (regardless of their success) down its users throats. Windows should make business on the basis of it being sold as an OS, which is what they are advertising the product as (and it's already successful enough at that). Not make business using their powerful position to give advantages to alternative Microsoft products from other markets (eg. unfair gatekeeping).

If Microsoft is not happy with those restrictions, they are welcome to surrender that position of power and stop distributing Windows in the EU. I'm sure there are many competing alternative Linux distributions / organizations that would be happy to comply with the EU regulations if they were the ones replacing Windows as the new popular gatekeepers.

And the same should go for Apple with iOS/Mac or Google with Android.

jocanib,

Defederation just means that Threads is blocked from viewing/interacting with fediverse servers. Right now, Threads is deferated (because it cant interact), but simply because they havent set it up yet. People can still learn about the fediverse and join up whenever they want. I dont think I understand your point.

My point is that the Fediverse is growing because of exiles from Twitter and Reddit. The vast majority of those users want/need a bigger network than is currently available on the Fediverse to get the breadth and depth of content that was on those sites.

If all instances defederate, then many of those users will reluctantly hand their data over to Zuckerberg instead. The vast majority of them already have through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc.

Meta might well want to murder us but universal defederation is just committing suicide instead. It’s the wrong tactic.

My hope is that Threads sticks with a shitty algorithmic feed and bombards people with corporate bullshit, and its users find out that independent instances exist and will give them more control.

My other hope is that other mega-corps (Google, Mozilla, etc) open up their own instances and end up holding each other hostage because it’s so easy for their users to jump ship to a competitor.

It’s a difficult situation to be sure but universal defederation is giving up without a fight.

I recommend kbin just because some of the people behind Lemmy are vocal far left wing. I want to support more moderates in the world.

How? Why would you resort to lying? I'm pro choice, I despise Trump, I'm pro gay and trans rights, I believe in UBI for everyone (as well as keeping the free market in place), pro legalization (of every drug), pretty anti gun but I still believe it's peoples right to own them, I think police should be completely reformed and prisons fundamentally changed to be places of rehabilitation. What opinion of mine shows I'm on the right end of the spectrum? Because I believe in nuance and civil discourse? That I think all humans deserve forgiveness and a chance to grow and become better? Please, do enlighten me.

You need to do a little research before you get up on your high horse. They’re literal, self proclaimed communists. Lemmy was made because Reddit wasn’t left enough. They enjoy censorship and deny basic human right violations, and parrot CCP propaganda. They’re tankies. That’s why the devs instance isn’t federated with many of the major ones.

This is partly why kbin exists.

Wtf. I accidentally deleted my comment two times. Lemmy mobile UI fail!

The forced distillation of every single position to being somewhere on this "left" to "right" spectrum is the single worst thing to happen to modern political discourse, IMO.

I'm a fan of the "8 Views" test, which tries to position views along four different axes instead of just one. Four is still too few but it's way better than what we've got now.

Honestly, they should put the downvote next to the boost and renamed to something more meaningful if it's not the opposite of an upvote. Everyone is bound to eventually get some amount of upvotes/downvotes, but boosts are not something given as easily (some people might not wanna use boosts at all!).

Then if something opposite to the upvote is wanted, add a different method. So we'll have upvote/downvote with no (or little) effect on reputation, and then something like boost/penalize.

The way it is now it kind of discourages participation in any popular topic if your opinion can be polarizing (even if it's totally respectful and valid) or if there's a significan minority of people who dislike what you said (even if most people upvoted it). Your reputation will be penalized, even when you are being polite, citing valid sources and your vote balance is still positive.

I feel it's mainly because of the desire to integrate with Mastodon as well.
He explains a bit about that here: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/3

There's also a ticket about changing how reputation is calculated: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/80
