Mostly kind chonky weirdo. Gentle nerd freak of the pacific north west. All nation states are vermin.

We tortured someone so much that even the military says they are now too crazy to stand trial.

We are a truly evil nation.

it’s funny the Americans consider him so far left

Remember a ton of countries are not politically free in any real fashion. For example Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and DPRK

Sure, the US is more open than literally the least open governments in the world.

I love how often defending the US is basically just saying "yeah but it's not that bad compared to Sudan."

Don’t mix beans and egg

Woah wait what why?

exception is my egg and tomato curry

Your egg and tomato curry has beans? Like lentils? Chickpeas? I'm imagining a pinto-dahl and freaking out here!

I imagine him boasting to multiple people about how smart his death-faking plan is, saying on tape what he plans to do after he fakes his death, etc.

But then no-one involved knows what live bullets or blanks look like and he dies trying to work out who to fire for killing himself.

According to the article, it's not that simple. This is from the ToS for the Unity Editor, which is subservient to a broader Unity ToS that has much stricter legal language about changing anything without warning and the customer being able to go fuck themselves.

So, yes, technically this bullshit may be completely legal. Devs who were sold Unity on "no royalties" may be forced to pay royalties. Which is definitely healthy for our society and not obviously a problem.

Hegar,
Hegar avatar

So if you've published a game, just keep on keeping on. You can sell that game, maintain an older copy of Unity to update it for bugs, even develop new content for that game with the older version of Unity.

According to the article, probably no.

Many devs may have updated unity and used it for minor updates, but also the clause in question probably doesn't protect anyone anyway. There's a broader ToS that supercedes it with much more restrictive language.

Quick reminder that kbin was still fairly early in development when the reddit exodus began and sped things up much sooner than anticipated. A few teething issues are to be expected and Ernest, the dev, has been open and communicating about what's going on.

He tried to get his gun back, which requires a criminal background check, and that's when they found the arrest warrant from Connecticut for rape, home entry and impersonating a police officer.

The Puyallup Police Department recruited someone who had an open arrest warrant for pretending to be a police officer in order to rape someone. And the Bellevue PD as well, since he was able to resign from them after failing the training course.

How the hell did he get through 2 police departments and a trial without a proper criminal history check?

Hegar,

That's so bonkers. The evil I expect, is the incompetence that I always find surprising.

Downvote for being factually incorrect about mushrooms, one of the best things that can be put into a mouth.

It's always been a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Yep! It's basically a form of bad writing.

There's something called an idiot plot, where the plot only works because the characters are idiots. If they just did the obviously correct thing, the tension would resolve too quickly.

It's a much harder task to create drama and tension from believable, likable, sensible, consistent characters. If your characters just CAPSLOCK ANGST DRAMA in every situation, it's way easier to keep tension. Annoying, badly written tension.

Hegar,

I couldn't finish book 6 because there was too much of harry whining in capslock for no appreciable reason, and I remember skipping over a lot of scenes with his uncle for the exact reasons OP highlights.

People hide important things for dumb reasons in the real world, but it's unsatisfying, lazy and overused in fiction. Especially in HP.

Hegar,

are idiots

It's true that people do dumb things, but it makes for annoying fiction. The real world doesn't always translate well into a story.

Chants of “See our might, see our power, landlords get no happy hour” ... “Parasite!” and “Get a job!”

Love it!

About an hour into the rally, the picketers entered the venue ... Witnesses said a male attendee of the BPOA event [landlord] then slapped a female TANC member [protester] in the face and pushed her.

Thuggish landlords throwing their weight around? I'm shocked. Interestingly, police who were monitoring refused to enter the venue.

No one's profits are more important than anyone's right to shelter. While there'll never be justice in a world with landlords, at least there can be some nice music:

Hegar,

Yep, even a shitty tenant's right to have shelter just so obviously outweighs the right for a landlord to profit from them.

There's no such thing as justice in a world with landlords.

I've been perfectly content with kbin since I joined, thanks for all you do!

Starbucks tried to open in Australia but failed to get any significant market share because Australians just prefer drinkable coffee.

'I am horrified': Archaeologists are fuming over ancient human relative remains sent to edge of space (www.livescience.com)

Fragmentary remains of two ancient human relatives, Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi, were carried aboard a Virgin Galactic flight on Sept. 8. Departing from Spaceport America in New Mexico, the fossils, carried by South African-born billionaire Timothy Nash in a cigar-shaped tube, were rocketed to the edge of space....

Hegar,
Hegar avatar

So yes, despite the misleading title these priceless remains of our shared hominid heritage made it back, safe in the pocket of an arrogant billionaire.

But why even risk it in the first place? There's absolutely no reward and some risk. That's dumb.

Moreover, this stunt is part of a disturbing trend of scientifically questionable promotion from Lee Burger, who was already a big name within archeology after finding Sediba and now on his way to wider celebrity since Naledi.

Homo Naledi is incredible in almost every regard - location, dates, preservation, number of individuals, morphology. It's nuts.

But recently Burger has been doing things like putting out press releases before peer review, timing them to boost his Netflix show. The latest claims of fire, tools and abstract carved symbols ended up failing peer review but were published anyway. They are full of tests not done, obvious hypotheses not considered, specialists not consulted, numbers that didn't replicate and some weirdly partially obscured images. But he's still out there, getting his conclusions into the public consciousness when they are not scientifically verified.

Yet another publicity stunt with no scientific merit is sure to piss off archeologists.

Hegar,
Hegar avatar

It was dumb to risk something this rare for no reward. That's a problem.

But even with the remains safe, this is part of a troubling trend from the archeologist in question of seeking publicity and raising the stature of the H. naledi finds (which are legit amazing) beyond what he's scientifically proven. Don't blast them into space for a few minutes - show experts the proof for all those claims you continue to make despite failing peer review.

Hegar,
Hegar avatar

I don't know anything about agendas.

There's a lengthy video from Gutsick Gibbon that goes over the peer reviews in detail. History Hit has separate interviews with Burger and professor Chris Stringer. If you search for 'homo naledi peer review' you should find some articles.

Image isn't working for me unfortunately but yeah, they real pretty. I first had some in Taiwan, the owners of a small cafe gave us a branch from their tree.
