@Ignacio@kbin.social

Spanish guy, who likes open source software and has just discovered the fediverse (as of 28th of April, 2022). I like video games, and indie and retro music. I’m a student. I’m officially diagnosed with ADHD and ASD since January, 2023.

America is a continent and Americans are people from that continent (Canadians, Usonians, Mexicans, Cubans, Argentinians, Brazilians...)

I'm in the fediverse since April 2022, but not at my full time. Thanks to spez, I'm in full time.

The Future of Reddit after the Blackout

As an effect of the recent Reddit blackout, the company is now surrounded by disappointed investors and community. I predict that Reddit may end up facing the same fate as Tumblr: being sold to another company. Only time will tell what the future holds for Reddit, but one thing is for sure - the protest will leave a lasting...

I'm not an expert in technology or computing, but I like ruminating in my head a lot (ADHDers like me do this every second). Here is how I understand this situation.

There is a webpage called kbin.pub. In kbin.pub there are a number of instances, kbin.social being one of them. I think that right now there are 6 or 7 instances.

The total number of kbin users can be over 150.000, 100.000 of them are in this instance.

Now, let's assume there is one single login, and with that single login you can configure your user in every instance. That means that every instance has one user, being you.

With 150.000 users, that means that this instance will increase its load 1,5 times more than its current load, but also the other instances will increase its load 100 times its current load, making every instance suffer the hug of death, like happened yesterday here, when it was almost unusable.

Instead, activitypub eases that load, making that with one single user in one single instance, you can interact with every other instance that communicates with the one you belong to. The server load is shared, and hugs of death are very localized.

And keep in mind I talked about kbin.pub, but with lemmy the situation can be more dramatic, because we're talking about dozens, almost hundreds of instances and like 50.000 total users.

The problem with supermods is not how much communities/magazines they moderate. The problem is that they see themselves as omnipotent gods with lots of influence, at least on Reddit. One example was awkwardtheturtle, but there are more.

I would like to see the moment when a Boltzmann brain can appear in the void all of a sudden.

I can confirm that federation is activated. Not at the same level as it was before the great migration wave, but it's something. I mean, I saw that post on m/all.

Ignacio,

It only shows the subscribers that belong to this instance. But yes, every federated magazine will be shown.

The only way to tell which is more active is by seeing when posts where published, how much posts there are...

About fragmentation, I've a good example. Let's suppose that there are two instances, beehaw.org and lemmygrad.ml. Both of them has a community about China. The first one, you can post anything about China. The second one, nothing against Chinese government. Every server has their own rules, some are more extrict and some are more free. It depends.

OC Some ramblings about the future

Tbh, this has been on my mind for the past two days, so I hope you guys don't mind if I unload it here. I tend to obsess and I figure if no one cares, then at least I can get it out of my head instead of thinking about it all the time. Also sorry for the length, I promise I have a doctor's note....

I think that reddit, with its karma system, wanted to become the next influencer-like site, same thing Instagram, Youtube and Twitter did with their followers/subscribers/etc.

Yes, upvotes and downvotes also exist here, but the fact that karma doesn't exist, the only important thing is not the ego "I'm the biggest karma farmer here and you all are filthy peasants", but the content itself.

I absolutely agree with everything you wrote. But changing our mindset doesn't occur in matter of days. We need to get rid of our old reddit and other social media traits.

OC I ask everyone here to modmail large subreddits about kbin

I ask that people modmail subreddits that have privated in protest (you can see which ones here: https://reddark.untone.uk/) and ask they put a message about kbin migration into their about section so users trying to see those subs will come here and start communities. It will help grow kbin as well as contribute to the protest....

Either Kbin or Lemmy. Let's diversify and share all the waves, or we'll struggle even to load a single page.

Dear pre-migration Keebinetters, how can we NOT ruin kbin for you?

As a former redditor I am glad to have found a new "home" and I hope I'm not intruding. Nevertheless, we are all a huge migration that is bound to change how kbin works and we're bound to piss off some pre-migration Keebinetters. The fact you guys were here before and not in reddit makes evident you don't want this to become a...

As I said on other posts, karma must stay irrelevant. We can live only with upvotes and downvotes without them being translated into virtual points that mean nothing and feed our egos and toxicity.

Internet was like the jungle years ago, but it was free from investors and monetization. Then Facebook came, Twitter too, YouTube changed its model of service, and everything became a shit show where we're the most damaged.

Fediverse in general, and pages like Lemmy, Kbin, Mastodon, PeerTube, etc. in their capabilities, can change that, and return internet to the users.
