This may be a very unpopular take on here, but I feel that some people on #ActivityPub / #Fediverse are showing some elitism.
While I do understand the very real threat that #Meta poses to communities and understand the want...I'm sorry...NEED to protect them, a lot more people are out here trying to take some moral high ground.
It just seems really weird to me outside of the desire to be trendy by hating on the next big thing, but also being very assholey to those who choose to or have to use it in order to communicate.
Understand, for most people, the Fediverse is complicated and they want something simple.
Others have businesses where their clientele are on other platforms.
@majorlinux I'm here because I wanted something far from Meta given their track record over the decades of being a privacy nightmare with their data collection and their apps and influence of the population their algorithms have had.
To me whatever tech it is doesn't really matter. It could an old school message board. If Facebook isn't there I'd choose it over Facebook, since the tech itself isn't what makes something good. It's the organization behind it, and their long term plans for it and what they plan to do with the extra data collected from users beyond just public comments.
So it's personally why I have red flags for instances that plan to join with Meta, since I don't view something being fediverse to mean automatically safe and uncorruptable. These instances aren't even built with privacy in mind with ip logs available to admins. So that's even more of a reason why I don't want to associate with Meta instances.
I don't view fediverse as this magic armor that would protect users in instances that choose to federate with meta. It's something I see people have to be just as deliberate in when it comes to making a meta account or not.
@mariyadelano I'm here because I wanted an alternative from social media run by huge companies who are in the business of serving ads and selling user info. And forcing upon them their official apps with a lot of concerning permissions.
And I wanted one that was further from the influencer driven ones that a lot of popular social media has turned into as it has become more of a platform used even by users themselves to sell and advertise to visitors with sponsored posts and product placements.
So I'm here because I wanted something more filled with regular people looking to have conversations not to try to become famous or shill products, but just because they had a topic they wanted to talk about.
Questions been asked to death, but I'm looking into getting the base macmin with 256 gig. But, should I opt for the 16 gig ram upgrade? Current PC use has been using it for gaming, maya, blender, photoshop, and davinci resolve. I'm coming from a PC with 32 gigs of ram, and I don't think I do anything particularly crazy intensive, and won't be using the macmini for games. I also want to run some programs an external SSD. How well does Mac mini handle that?
@shutuuplegs Is the drive upgrade necessary if I'm going to be using an external SSD? Aside from benchmarks of the internal drive does it being slower matter?
