medgremlin,

Bitcoin is evil in the sense that Bitcoin mining has likely done irreparable harm to the environment through energy usage and it’s associated pollution. I also find it to be a very predatory market that relies on small investors to bolster the overall value, but usually gives little to no benefit in return for that investment. All of the hype and media around cryptocurrency encourages people in precarious positions to buy in with the hopes of making it big. It’s just gambling.

In my experience, people who use and trade cryptocurrency in significant quantities are likely either gambling on it, or using it as money laundering for nefarious things.

Before you jump into your tirade about how you have all this education and how you’re so much smarter than everyone else, I’ll head you off at the pass to say that you probably know a lot more about computer and software engineering than I do. However, I have a fairly extensive education in the humanities and biological sciences. So if we’re going to be all stupid about it, I guarantee that I’ll be more useful and more employable in any kind of post-crash society than you would be, so I’d encourage you to take other kinds of intelligence into consideration before you get all sanctimonious about stuff like this; especially in subjects that don’t really matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

Glide,

Hard disagree.

Path of Exile is a very different game today and appeals to a completely different subset of players since it started. The people that are still playing a very happy with it, but the people who started with its release/beta perceived it as decidedly “worse every patch”.

The best it ever was was 3.0 when the story felt complete and the campaign still mattered. It’s a glorified slot machine now, and anything that encourages players to actively play the game is perceived as a barricade to more serotonin hits. Just see how the community reacted to the PoE2 footage. “Why do enemies take time to die? What do you mean I’m expected to dodge attacks?”

Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun? (kbin.cafe)

Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.

Blake,

I’m gonna come out swinging: not even a game, but two entire fucking genres:

  1. Battle royales. I am like 90% convinced that gamers have been tricked by some dark psychology that has somehow convinced them that these games are worth playing. I don’t know whether it’s because the quality of FPS games has been so low for so long that today’s gamers have never really played a properly fun shooter or what. Battle royales are 75% downtime. You spend so long fucking around parachuting in to the map, walking around, collecting stuff, bla bla bla, interspersed by just a few moments of action, and when you get killed it usually doesn’t feel fair, it’s because a whole other team showed up right as you were already fighting someone else and put you in a nearly impossible situation.
  2. MOBA games are just RTS games with the best bits taken out.

why is no one talking about it?

Because it's not fucking real.

That is wild, I made an account on there last night so I was curious to find the announcement post. Evidently lots of people are quite outraged. I also noticed as of a few minutes ago a clarification post has been made: https://lemmynsfw.com/post/29826

To quote:

I have so much respect for @yay@lemmynsfw.com but i can’t believe how poorly he wrote the update message, lol.

Here is what’s happening;

- loli/shota are BANNED and not okay in any way.
- IRL kids are BANNED OBVIOUSLY because no shit.
- characters who are petite/young-looking but not obviously underage are ALLOWED because as an instance the votes decided that banning all of it was destructive, and differentiating between them can be impossible.

The line will continue to be up to the admins discretion, though we always appreciate input. And beyond this, individual communities can decide whether they want to outright ban all flat-chested etc. porn to be safe.

Any other clarifications necessary, just ask below. Thanks for reading. ~Restful

I'm not sure what to make of all this; it's a bit iffy to me so I'll be on the lookout for another NSFW related Lemmy community. There were a couple of folks in the comments of the original announcement post stating they're gonna make their own instance so we'll see how that pans out.

JollyTheRancher,

Another subreddit posted the date he said it, which I think added to it - He said it on April 19th of this year - https://www.gq.com/story/steve-huffman-reddit-public-tiktok-ban - that aged poorly very very quickly

To add a bit more context, this comment is from a former Reddit dev, who is now the creator and developer of Tildes, one of the Reddit alternatives that's been gaining traction in the last week:

(I used to work as a backend developer at Reddit - I left 6 years ago but I doubt the way things work has changed much)

I think it's extremely unlikely that this is deliberate. The way that Reddit builds "mixed" subreddit listings (where you see posts from multiple subreddits, like users' front pages) is inefficient and strange, and relies heavily on multiple layers of caches. Having so many subreddits private with their posts inaccessible has never happened before, and is probably causing a bunch of issues with this process.
