If this is how the admins choose to act, so fucking be it. I'll deltree my 12 year old account and never go back. As it stands, the fediverse is already my new home, and the users who decide to remain on reddit can explain to all the new users what the fuck went wrong.

Bostondrivingisworse,

The only people on reddit who are against the blackout are conservative assholes who hate picket lines. They're going to be the majority of remaining users.

JasSmith,

Nah I’m “conservative” (at least that’s what they call me on Reddit now), and most of us support this blackout. The site has been hostile to diverse political opinions for a long time. Note how one of the largest subs, r/Politics, remained open the whole time. They are, by every metric, very left wing.

Don’t let the silly culture war divide us on this one. We all think Reddit has jumped the shark.

Trebach,

I think r/Politics is owned by admins so they were never going dark.

JasSmith,

It's all rather opaque, isn't it? I suspect you're correct, but if Reddit is actually paying for and controlling the moderation of /r/Politics, that raises a number of serious questions; both ethical and legal.

Rogue_General,

Legal issue? Nah not really. Ethical issue? Absolutely.

djmarcone,

What they did to The_Donald where Spez edited comments to make the sub seem to be inciting violence, so he had an excuse to ban it, is a prime example and should be a red flag regardless of someone's politics.

The banning from several subs automatically of people who joined joke subs like "ChurchofCovid" is also a prime example.

Very hostile to differing political opinions.

I don't think it's a social media site any more, I think it's a propaganda site and a data harvesting operation.

kestrel7,
kestrel7 avatar

I don't think it's a social media site any more, I think it's a propaganda site and a data harvesting operation.

I agree, but I also think that most social media has been propaganda and data harvesting all the way down from day one.

Like, the internet was not made by accident, or for no reason. It was developed at public universities with military funding.

Rabbithole,

where Spez edited comments to make the sub seem to be inciting violence, so he had an excuse to ban it

Not what happened. Spez, fuckwit though he is, actually managed to do a halfway decent trolling there.

A bunch of t_d people were slagging him off and insulting him in their comments. Spez got drunk as shit one night and edited their comments, swapping his name with Trump's so that it made them look like a bunch of anti-trumpers. Much gnashing of teeth ensued.

Absolutely shouldn't have done it, especially as CEO of Reddit FFS, but definitely funny as shit.

Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely a mark against him, but he didn't get them banned. They thouroughly got themselves banned on their own.

BrambleDog,

You only think /politics is left wing because they banned all the left wingers.

Also, liberals aren't left wingers. Have you ever heard an anarchist or a socialist talk about a liberal?

JasSmith,

I hear what you’re arguing. People are much more complex than “left” and “right.” But, colloquially, the people on r/Politics, are left wing. They support abortion, and gay marriage, and trans people, and universal healthcare, and higher taxes, and a hundred other values typically shared by those on the left.

Old school liberals are certainly different to what we see on the left today.

Also the people who say "well I'm not using third party apps so who cares anyway"

The thing they should care about is how reddit has handled this situation. Imagine what nonsense they'll come up with next if they're willing to turf away some of the oldest and most dedicated users

alertsleeper,

Yeah they don't see the point, wich is the trajectory of the platform.

They are lying to everybody in order to push out of market the 3rd party apps, but that's one side of it, they are also, effectively, forcing you as a user to use a worse app just for them to get more money by doing less.

Lells,
Lells avatar

I actually used the newer official desktop site, and really didn't mind it at all. What I minded was Reddit acting like their company was Reddit. No, you just provided the website and infrastructure. You were not Reddit. WE were Reddit. And we liked Reddit as it was, not what you are turning it into to make a quick buck on your IPO. We didn't appreciate providing ALL the value and then being treated as if we weren't important or to be listened to. I'm tired of good sites being whored out for mega-bucks and then transformed into another sub-par lowest common denominator that is a ghost of its former self. I'll skip the wait and pain of watching that happen yet again, and leave now.

So yeah, I wasn't a third party app user, but in the long run I'll still be effected by everything corporate management is doubling down on right now.

killick,
killick avatar

You're completely right from a user's perspective. I think this post from Cory Doctorow helps explain what we're seeing. He doesn't talk about Reddit specifically, but it should be easy to infer the implications for Reddit from what he writes: https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/

killick,
killick avatar

Here's the first paragraph from Cory's post:

"Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die." Reddit is in step 4.

Exactly this. I've used RIF since forever, so RIF is Reddit for me. Even if they take it all back and everything goes back to normal, there's still a bad taste in my mouth. How are y'all spreading yourself out in the fediverse so far? Right now I'm just browsing the front page of kbin and occasionally check in on my feed in mastodon, but I'm yet to find my "niche" communities.

threefriend,

I have accounts in and made bookmarks for kbin.social, fedia.io, beehaw.org, and lemmy.world, and I switch between them to get most of my reddit-alike fix. When I find a community/magazine that suits my fancy, I subscribe to it from fedia.io since it's good about showing external content. When I need to find something niche, I search browse.feddit.de and subscribe to it from fedia.

defeater,

I’m genuinely enjoying Kbin, since I only scrolled and aimlessly read Reddit for short periods. Kbin feels more organic while still letting me scroll like I used to (which is a bad habit, but whatever)

I made an account on mastodon but haven’t exactly looked into using it properly.

I didn’t understand lemmy and gave up on that.

themadcodger,
themadcodger avatar

I started on Mastodon and switched to Calckey, picked up Pixelfed and was hanging out for a few months. Saw Rexxit was going to happen and hopped on here about a month ago. So I guess I'm not your typical migrant.

WorriedGnome,
WorriedGnome avatar

@themadcodger I love the UI of calckey but as far as I understand it, it's just a twitter replacement and the UI isn't built for subs / communities or a reddit style experience?

@Technoguyfication @nevernevermore

themadcodger,
themadcodger avatar

Yeah, Calckey is a microblogging platform so it's there with Mastodon in the twitter group. That said, you can access this content from there. But if you're looking for more of a Reddit experience you're better off here.

ChimpanzeeThat,

One of my biggest challenges is getting the 'front page' to fill up with the kind of thing I'd get on r/all. I think at the moment it only shows posts from the subs I subscribe to. But I can easily see how Kbin could replace Reddit (im not going back).

PoopingCough,

The reason it seems like that is because this kbin instance (kbin.social) isn't federated right now because of heavy traffic. So you'll only see magazines that were created here. As soon as the restrictions are relaxed you'll see other instances in the default feed. Or you could sign up for a different kbin instance like fedia.io which are currently still federated.

Even so, the other instances that are working as intended don't quite have that r/all feel yet just because there aren't nearly the same number of users in all of the fediverse as there were on reddit. It'll take time for the content to catch up.

atlhart,
atlhart avatar

That’s mostly what I’m doing. I wasn’t a big /r/all browser and I only read /r/popular versus contributing. Where I was active were smaller subreddits that just don’t have much of a user base, or don’t exist, yet.

I don’t have the time to mod anything major, so I may create a smaller magazine here or there.

Parallax,
Parallax avatar

I just joined and am hoping to recreate at least one or two of my favorite old subs/magazines that don't exist yet, post some content here and there, and hope it gets some inertia. :)

Varyag,
Varyag avatar

I made an account on kbin and on beehaw to see how each side seems to work. I'm enjoying the general feel and atmosphere of both so far, but probably because many of the people I'm seeing are also Reddit escapees. But niche communities are still in a very germinal stage, a few of them are being created but since it's happening right now, there's still very few people in them, or that found them yet.

So far I have persuaded 0.0 of my Instagram and Facebook friends to move to ActivityPub instances. :-( Might just be me. I've stopped posting on the facebook except for a quarterly post about Mastodon and I deleted my Twitter. I don't know how fast Insta will reach terminal enshittification, but it seems to be holding on.

1019throw, (edited )

I'm struggling to find content. I saw some news about a sports team I follow, Xbox game, or show I'm watching- I would typically go to reddit, easily find a sub, and all of the content and comments I want. Now when I look on kbin or lemmy or beehaw ( I don't even know the difference), I could be in an instance? where there is isn't Xbox content but maybe another instance has tons of content. It's a bit confusing.

DodgeForthrast,
DodgeForthrast avatar

Yeah that’s definitely a challenge. I wish I had an answer for you but I’m still figuring it out myself.

Kithrai,

Mastodon is kind of a slow rolling thing. I've been on Universeodon for a few months now and I feel like I'm finally getting a good set of accounts to follow that show me what I want to see. But it's not going to replace what I really went to Reddit for.

Trebach,

It's not meant to. Mastodon is meant to be more of a replacement for Twitter.

Blakerboy777,
Blakerboy777 avatar

part of the issue is that kbin has been hit by so much traffic that they've activated cloud flare to protect it, which I understand is causing content from other parts of the fediverse to not come in at times. There may be more content here than you are able to access at this exact moment due to the technical issues of growing several orders of magnitude in size.

czech,
czech avatar

Like another user mentioned- content across the fediverse isn't federating with kbin.social except in a very limited capacity. This is temporary.

https://fedia.io/ is another instance of kbin which has a much smaller local population but is federating much more than kbin.social at the moment. You can see posts from lemmy on the front page.

woooferine,

I am still getting my head around this fediverse concept. I know of lemmy and I am here at kbin because I heard that kbin is one of the larger communities, but now you are saying fedia.io "is federating much more"? Does that equal to more content from other sources?

Maybe I'm still thinking in reddit-terms. Fuck, I miss my Baconreader.

CMLVI,
CMLVI avatar

You're pretty much right. I am on Fedia as well, just because I'm exploring. It's been difficult to go past the concept stage in my head while here, simply because it's currently limited due to the growth and cloud flare hindrance (this is, from what I've seen, is partly causing the federation issues). At Fedia, I've been able to sort of practice the platform. It is federated with lemmy and other instances, so you get the access to other "subs" and the users there as well. If/when the platforms get sorted, and I'm able to fully vet the instances to see where I fit better, I'll make a commitment. As it stands, I'll just swap back and forth as needed and keep exploring.

I highly recommend checking Fedia, if not just to become more acquainted on how this all meshes together!

Yeah, when you joined a reddit community after the 2010s, most of the popular ones would have some posts as a backlog to jump into. Only very rarely would you get a niche sub that hadn't had anything posted that week. Kbin's really just getting started and it'll take a little while for things to fill out, but I have a lot of hope! The cat and dog photos are starting to roll in already, amyfou is posting regularly to /m/dogs! /m/food has photos and a discussion about cake!

I've made accounts on lemmy.ml, lemmy.ca, requested beehaw.org, and here, but probably going to stick with here for UI reasons plus I like the microblogs for things that don't exactly warrant a post. The Mastodon integration is neat, but I doubt I'll really use it since I never used Mastodon before.

Probably going to stick around here and Tildes (though that's not the fediverse). Subscribed to a bunch of communities in the various lemmy instances before federation was took down for a bit, so hopefully one niche community grows there. Made one of my own for a relatively niche game I play (it's a decently popular game, but it's definitely niche).

What do you mean federation was taken down for Lemmy? I haven't noticed that.

    EDIT:

Also wanted to point out that you can sub and communicate and create posts on beehaw.org posts from your lemmy.ml or lemmy.ca accounts. It is clunky, but you just have to go to search page (top right) from your account's home instance, change the type from 'All' to 'Community' and search for the remote community using their format for searching communities (i.e.: !technology). The search usually returns nothing on the first search if your instance updates it's federated info with the remote instance or there are network errors. So just clear the search and try 'technology' and I have found that returns it.

KBins search function is a lot better. I have found a lot of other bugs on Lemmy, but you can work around them.

You can also sub to those lemmy communities from here. but that is a bit more in development than the lemmy to lemmy instance communication.

    Xperr7,
    Xperr7 avatar

As part of the DDoS protection, kbin's currently not federated as to not get more traffic from other places in the fediverse. I believe you can still see lemmy communities and subscribe to them, but there's not really much there currently because kbin's not federating.

I'm completely new to the whole fediverse thing though, so I could be talking out of my ass regarding why it's not federating.

Sure, the main devs might support the CCP and actively try to silence critisicm about it, but the software is open source and decentralised for exactly this purpose. Anyone can fork it and host it themselves, and users can use any other instance which allows free speech with practically no difference in user experience.
