Is it just me or does the Lemmy community actively ignoring the existence of kbin? I see a lot of posts explicitly mentioning Lemmy users but only posts from kbinners mention both platforms.
I was looking at a comment I left earlier today (several hours earlier) and realized I made a typo, and went to edit it. I'm used to Reddit putting a little asterisk next to the comment's timestamp to indicate that it was edited, but I'm not seeing anything like this on Kbin. Is this something that's tracked somewhere for users...
I for example almost always append an "Edit:" note even though it initially is Reddiquette not Fediquette. Also you could use Mastodon for kbin content, it shows edit notes and edit histories
Kbin is by far not a finished product. Please do not forget this. Ernest is working super hard on kbin but he is literally ONE MAN running all of kbin with a little bit of external help.
I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message...
No but for real, Federation is about being open in my opinion. We have modlogs, everything. Then please provide information about why you exclude x from doing y.
I've been boycotting Reddit for three weeks so far but I did come back today. I deleted my content and commented about a possible GDPR (DSGVO in German) lawsuit if they bring back my content. I recorded my user page pre deletion, while deletion and after deletion. I have the exact date and time in the global menu so there is no fracking around from Reddit. I'll happily contact the German agency responsible for GDPR complaints.
Oh woh. Well I agree on Reddit being in need of making a profit. I uderstand he found Reddit and does not want it to die. But the problem is the "fuck you" price. I would be totally fine to pay Reddit Premium to keep using 3rd party apps. I would have been okay with paying 40 bucks a month instead of 20 to the 3rd party app so the dev can pay the API fees.
But what u/spez is constantly doing and showing is driving me away from being nice and respectful to him. He blackmails 3rd party devs, he falsely accuses them of saying things that never happened. If he just said "I do now want 3rd party apps anymore" I'd be frustrated but I'd forgive and forget. At this point u/spez just seems to fight with the mindset of a preschooler against the community.
Oh and he is sympathizing with Musk and his moderation and way to run a company. These two things already made me say FUCK NO to Twitter.
Hey, I just wanted to know if the general user base would be fine with OC content crossposted from Reddit. I have maybe 10 OC memes and I want to contribute to the Fediverse, but try not to annoy anyone, especially since these have my Reddit username as watermark....
I can only repeat what I just commented somewhere else:
I built Swift apps and Mastodon or Discord are NOT a proper format to get help, Discord being crappy for archiving, too.
I have a hard time getting help by people that really know this stuff because Swift is made by Apple, and the Apple bubble tends to stick to Twitter and the likes. If enough migrate, I can finally say frick off, Reddit
So now that Lemmy and the community overall are getting a lot of attention, with /c/memes being one of the biggest communities across instances, I think we should be a bit more strict about certain things....
So, are Apple operating systems actually considerably better in terms of privacy? I’ve been considering making the switch for both privacy and security reasons, but I’m not really sure it’s worth the cost and hassle. I’m currently on an iPhone (recently switched because I had a Pixel 7 with… issues, but that’s longer...
EDIT: LONG POST, my opinion are backed on years of interest in the topics as well as first hand experience.
I'll go Windows x Android first: Windows is a privacy nightmare. You can try and fight it but you can and will break things along the way. So I'll basically advise you to use anything else.
Android in the other hand has some options to flash custom ROMs and thus you can change what's running. But you're stuck with /e/ OS if you want real privacy without giving up on almost everything Google, banking apps, etc. There are other Android forks but most of them focus on security, features, gimmicks, etc. So at least there you have a good amount of control. You can use Android with KDE Connect for actually good cross device features in my personal opinion.
macOS iOS:
These are fully controlled by Apple. Sure, Apple goes hard against 3RD PARTY tracking, but does not tell you you need to switch off 1st party tracking within multiple settings pages (own experience). There have been some reports about macOS sending hashes of photos from a local account with no iCloud login, but that was fixed quickly, even though I've been skeptical. But this video by Techlore actually explains things really good.
MY conclusion?
I'd say the most private would be Android x Linux with KDE Connect.
2nd place is iOS with proper settings x Linux with KDE Connect. (For real, this tool gets you cool cross device sync.)
3rd place would be iOS x macOS both on privacy friendly settings if you, like me, rely on proprietary stuff. Xcode and iOS development can only be done on macOS and thus I'll stick to this combo. Fedora will always have a special place in my heart and on my SSD though.
So which level of these you want to pick definitely come down to how much you rely on what software and what you can afford. I hope I could help.
Yes, ProtonMail is really good, I just missed the desktop bridge. It is a reality now but it's not part of the free tier. I can't really complain about them except for the icon design. They do not feel at home on iOS haha
I just have to confess I still use my outlook mail as my main because there is so much legacy stuff connected to it like Xbox games, Minecraft, two movies,... But I use Anon Addy to alias it most of the time. That's why I can't really give you a better impression about the Proton suite
Yeah Proton and linux gaming will only get better over time. Valve is heavily invested in getting this really good. And regarding the Android experience, I can only tell you that Google keeps trying to cripple the non Google experience even further. They just tried getting rid of Aurora Store and thus of getting Play Store apps without the Play Store. I just hope Aurora can keep operating just as it did until now.
As an effect of the recent Reddit blackout, the company is now surrounded by disappointed investors and community. I predict that Reddit may end up facing the same fate as Tumblr: being sold to another company. I just hope many still stay offline for a longer time to protest. I don't think 2 days will be enough. A but if damage is done but if there will be no 3rd party apps I'm out. I'd pay for Reddit Premium if that would give me a personal API or something

I couldn't find support for enabling MFA in my profile anywhere. In a modern world, this is a must have feature....
