What do you think of our lord and saviour Odysee.com?

Yeah, I have been hearing about Youtube blocking ad blocks for a while now and I thought maybe Firefox + uBlock Origin is holding ads at bay for a while, but yeah, it happened today. uBlock origin has been unable to block some ads for me and I am thinking of leaving Youtube. I searched day and night (wink wink) for an...

It should either moderate or filter bot accounts.

The more steam deck and proton get games working on linux, the less need I have for this bloated windows.

I'm European, even 25 years ago when I was kid, people made jokes about how you don't ask American police officers for directions, because they'll mess you up.

If only someone would replace it with something else har.

I agree when it comes to the laptop batteries making it hard to replace them. But I do think that processors, memory and ssds fail a lot less often than hdds. However it's not a reason to not make their M-something SoC modular. They need to be close together? Sure make sockets for all the parts close to each other… but they wont.

I think more people might be ready to admit it, because it becomes more and more acceptable.

Why does “come here” bother me so much?

Ok, I have no idea why this bothers me and I don’t even know what to call it. My husband is a “come here” guy. Something he thinks is interesting and wants to show me - hey, come here! Nuclear apocalypse - hey, come here! Why the hell wont he just tell me why he wants me to get up, trudge to wherever he is, so that he can...

Maybe it's a language barrier thing "come here" sounds rude to my German brain. Like an order you give a dog, not the way you ask a person to come to you. "Check this out" seems the same but it sounds much better to me.

There should be a law prohibiting these payment companies to be picky when it comes to legal transactions.

Age is not hardwired to things like posting behavior, personal views and affinity to technology. There are people younger than me who use their phone like my mom and write comments my grandpa would think are backwards thinking.

I would make it impossible for women to be subjected to posts like this.

I feel like such an old man, but I'm 46. (lemmy.world)

I have wrinkles, I have grey hair, I have back problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, I can’t remember anything, the world seems confusing and complicated to me now and I wish things were simpler (which is why I like Lemmy). I definitely don’t get kids today or their music....

Arthur C. Clark once said "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic". What technologies do we have today that would look like magic to people from the past?

I think lasers are pretty wack when you think about them through this lens. A small, wand-like object in your hand can make light appear from seemingly nowhere. If it’s powerful enough it can set things on fire or blind people. Not to mention larger ones like laser cutters or the LLD, used to destroy missiles midflight. Thats...

I mean we gather these black rocks called silicone and refine them, then we cut them to plates and inscribe them with microscopic runes using light and very secret mixtures. Next we use lighting on it to make it think for us.

Many rich people fall into the trap of legitimizing their wealth to themselves the wrong way. Everyone, not just super rich people, had some help during their career. Everyone got lucky at some point too. Connections, inheritances, family friends and so on.

But the wrong way to go about it is to just say, if I can do it and so many others cant, it must be their fault. They must be lazy or stupid or both…

Even people who just won the lottery, so actually really just got lucky, can fall into that trap. And then they start to treat others according to their net worth.

How do people disconnect from work when they enjoy solving technical work problems?

I’m struggling to disconnect from work. I’ve been working on an interesting problem for the last couple of weeks (compacting change data capture events from sharded MySQL servers into BigQuery). It’s an interesting technical problem. There are lots of optimization opportunities and novel patterns I can introduce....
