she/her/they

I like metal music, gaming (primarily fps and rpg), technology in general, good conversations, and enthusiastic individuality.

Fuck Steve Huffman.

Xylia,

Have you tried using the Chat feature (GPT-4) to do searching? I just tried it, and it surprisingly works really well for some inquiries.

Like, use their chat AI, but as a natural language search engine. It’s integrated to Bing’s index so it can peruse it itself, so you don’t have to wade through all the Microsoft click-baits crap they put everywhere.

Xylia,

Android fan here, currently using an iPhone.

You’re not entirely wrong, but you’re missing half the equation. You see, the implementations here actually work fairly decently and feel nice to use. Still took them way too long, and they’re still getting too much credit. But the entire experience is more polished.

That either matters to you or it doesn’t. It didn’t used to for me, so I used Android for years since it’s significantly more customizable and capable.

Now I have multiple computing devices and need my phone to fulfill a more general role, and I’d like that to be an enjoyable experience. So I’m on iPhone again.

Xylia,

The Threads app itself clarifies that the intent is to federate down the road.

Xylia,

What’s the point of blocking a bunch of Linux communities? I agree with your right to do so. Just not sure I see the point.

Windows/Mac/Linux daily user here. We can all exist in harmony.

Xylia,

Trolling was pathetic then and it’s pathetic now. Most of us grew out of that phase we had ten years ago.

Xylia,

Yeah, that’s the type of immature and childish response that completely ignores the entire situation I expect from a “troll”.

Pathetic. Have fun with that.

Xylia,

You’ve summed up pretty much exactly how I feel.

The Fediverse solutions are better because of interoperability. While I feel Meta needs to be watched closely as far as their moves and intentions in the space, I’m worried by shutting out any large company projects utilizing the Fediverse, the concept will never “take off”.

And I’ve seen some argue that they don’t want it to take off. That they’d prefer the Fediverse stay niche, and I wholly disagree. The way this is all designed allows each user to choose the experience they’re going for, and shoehorning the entire Fediverse into some vision of a fringe and niche network that no influencers or corporate interests are on at all, is just begging for it to stay irrelevant forever.

Ideally, we wind up in a situation where Meta content can easily be filtered away by any individual user, should they feel that is necessary. But if Threads takes off, I’d rather be able to interact with that content from right here than have to actually become a user of their entire platform.

Xylia,

It’s legit, is sent from the same shortcode that account updates and such get sent from, and their official app also has notices about it.

Don’t really see anything wrong with the way they did it.

Xylia,

The trackpads get slept on heavily for fps games as well. If you get it dialed in just right with motion control at a low sensitivity as well, you can get about as accurate as a mouse honestly.

OC While you're waiting on a kbin app, you should know the mobile site is entirely functional as a mobile app. Just make a shortcut for your home screen

Apps are always nice, but lots of mobile websites, including the kbin one, are entirely functional as an app. In your browser you can just make a shortcut to them, and they'll appear on your home screen and act as an app....

Screenshot of kbin on Firefox, with the Install button. Then the kbin icon on the home screen. Then kbin opened from the shortcut
Xylia,

If you are using iOS and Safari, adding the icon to Home Screen prevents Safari extensions from running in my experience. So if you’re using any of the Userscripts or user styles like the collapsible comment script, they won’t work. Took me a while to figure out why they weren’t working. Visiting from the browser works with the scripts and styles, obviously.

Xylia,

I am just using an app called "Usercripts" right now. I bought Hyperweb a while back but it wasn't seeming to work for me. If you can get that one to work it's a pretty good (but expensive) all-in-one solution that includes userscripts, userstyles, ad and tracking blocking, URL redirect, custom search tags, etc.

Xylia,

Now I’ve seen you share a lot of bad takes since I joined this site, but that there is the worst. What a crock of shit.

OotL: What's the deal with people claiming Lemmy as a whole supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), dictatorships, denies genocides, etc?

I keep running into comments where users are arguing for avoiding Lemmy, claiming that Lemmy supports authoritarian governments, supports the CCP, sides with Russia in their invasion of Ukraine, denies genocides committed by nominal communist governments, and other similar political claims. I know there are communist instances...

Xylia,

That’s how I feel. If Meta is going to have social media networks they might as well follow open standards.

Xylia,

It’s funny, I’ve never thought about the render-ahead queue manipulation being a way to make lower FPS more tolerable.

I don’t mind that the game is targeting 30fps on consoles but man I cannot for the life of me get used to it. I got a Steam Deck and targeting 30fps would let me run more games at native resolution but I haven’t been able to handle the lag and choppiness so I’ve been settling for 40-45.

The kbin/lemmy app is coming along. Here´s a little preview of the upcoming beta! Heavy inspiration from Apollo. The app will be available for both iOS and Android. (imgur.com)

The dev, @hariette, also has a Mastodon profile where she posts updates https://tech.lgbt/@hariette. There is also a link to the apps discord server in her bio.

Xylia,

The official one is disabled right now pending some work by Ernest.

Xylia,

Signed up a few days ago, it looks fantastic! Can’t wait to start testing it out.

Anyone else enjoying the Internet better, now that they’re off Reddit?

Hadn’t realized how reliant upon Reddit I’d become for news and interesting things until after it turned to shit and I quit it. I’ve rediscovered RSS for ex., using reader apps to scan sources directly and read without all the noise—that actually came from someone’s recommendation here in the comments. I’ve found...

Xylia,

Nobody here owes you, or reddit, anything. Least of all their free content contributions over years.

Both you and the company suffer from the same ridiculous sense of entitlement and should get over yourselves.

Xylia,

As a user, I see value in ensuring your API at the very least is “compatible with” Lemmy’s, as long as doing so doesn’t impact compatibility with other projects. Primarily because I see at least the Thread element of Kbin as very similar to the Lemmy experience, and I think it’d be healthy for the entire fediverse if efforts to make a tool/client for one of them could be easily retooled with minimal work or work as-is with the other.

I do worry this would prevent the Kbin project from having as much agency over how interactions are implemented and any future plans to expand the featureset, but as a non-developer I’m not sure how valid those concerns are when discussing building a compatible API.

Thank you for all the work and effort you’re putting in!

Xylia,

For me, a lot of it came down to the fact that Epic Games more or less dropped Unreal Tournament 4 to focus on what appeared to be a low effort adaptation of PUBG slapped over another game, and in doing so basically ripped the heart out of deathmatch arena shooters, and all we got out of it was a game that didn’t excel at any specific thing beyond appeal to children.

At this point I’m still sour about UT, but Fortnite has gotten enough updating to its technology and graphics that I’m less angry about it pretty much becoming Unreal Engine’s flagship game and more angry about what it represents. The game has always been fine.

Xylia,

The 2014 Samsung Galaxy S5 had a removable battery and IP67 rating.

Xylia,

It’s basically filters for games that use the Vulkan graphics API. You can inject antialiasing methods or sharpening filters directly into the game using the vkBasalt tool.

Here is a comparison video showing how you could configure it to look.
