cousteau,

Fun! Always wanted to try a stacked keys setup but it doesn't make sense for most of the work I do. Are you running your controller through Mainstage, or something similar?

cousteau,

Oh heck yeah that's awesome, seems like an efficient and fun setup!

This community makes giving up Reddit much easier

One of the biggest things holding me back from leaving Reddit, despite the fact I hate the way they are handling, well, everything, is the sense of community with people sharing similar experiences as me, as well as sharing my hobbies. It's nice to be able to look at things other people made in a hobby you're interested in, but...

cousteau,

Right there with you. Only started following the subreddits a few months ago and it was invaluable before I decided to leave reddit fully. Glad to see that there is already a community building up here, seems like it'll be a really nice platform.

Fernando Alonso reveals what 'outstanding' Lance Stroll needs to do to be 'fighting for the top 5' | Formula 1® (www.formula1.com)

Fernando Alonso has heaped praise on his current Aston Martin team mate Lance Stroll, lauding the at times “outstanding” performances of the Canadian – while revealing what he feels Stroll needs to do join him in the fight for podiums on a consistent basis.

cousteau,

Difference is there's something aesthetically appealing about dying malls. Reddit looks more like a dumpster fire at the moment.

cousteau,

I absolutely adore this little window into how sheet music used to be made! Especially as someone who builds/edits scores professionally (and has a LOT of complaints about modern software), it's a nice reminder of how easy it is nowadays.

Fum fact, we still use the term "engraving" to describe the act of making sheet music!

cousteau,

Of all the chaotic protest choices so far, this is definitely the funniest! Very curious to see how this pans out.

cousteau,

I've never felt so seen in my life. My whole evening was this!

cousteau,

One on hand this is a huge bummer, especially as this is the first Final Fantasy I've been excited for in a long time. On the other hand, more time to enjoy TOTK and Diablo! As long as it's a well optimized release, I have no issues at all waiting.

Who is your favorite musician right now or of all time?

I'm looking to discover new artists and I feel this is a great way to do so!

For bonus points, tell me your favorite song(s) by the musician(s) you mention in the comments.

@cliffwade

Currently really enjoying listening to some Latin hip-hop and pop. Not sure what kind of stuff you're looking for but here are some favs at the moment:

Ana Tijoux (1977) - Rap/Hip-hop
Rebel Diaz (America vs Amerikka) - Rap/Hip-hop activists
Sara Hebe (Politicalpari) - Rap/Hip-hop

Silvana Estrada (Abrazo) - Singer/Songwriter with a gorgeous voice
She also has a killer album called La Sagrado (with Charlie Hunter)

Julieta Venegas (Prolific Mexican pop/singer-songwriter), can't go wrong with any of her stuff!

Struggling to find something to listen to today. Needs to be quiet and beautiful but not so devastatingly emotive it makes me too sad to work

cousteau,

@DomSathanas
If you're into some peaceful singer-songwriter vibes, Silvana Estrada's EP is a real treat:

What is this community for exactly?

So I guess I'm wondering if this community is intended to be about photography, as in the discussion of photography, or if it's going to be like r/itookapicture was on Reddit. I absolutely don't think that we need to replicate what they did on that other site, but those were two very different places with very different...

cousteau,

I think that's a wise approach, it's too early with people adopting new platforms. I do like @Melon 's idea of suggesting photo-only posts come with some context, or insight into the post. Especially if folks happen to be sharing other work that isn't their own, but that's another topic altogether. I doubt we'll hit spam levels of posts soon, but it would at least guide the community in some regard.

cousteau,

Sadly feels like this is inevitable for any independent companies, especially if they are competing at a big enough scale. Hopefully they continue to develop exciting instruments (the last few years have had some killer releases), but I worry the most passionate designers will jump ship if the writing is on the wall...

cousteau,

I've really been eyeing the Hydrasynth for its sound design workflow (as an alternative to the Cobalt8 I currently have), how did you find the learning curve on it? Is it fairly menu dive-y, or do the onboard controls give you a clear enough picture as you build on it? My biggest complaint with the Cobalt8 is how little info you can see at any given moment. Powerful synth and sounds great but I don't know that I love the workflow.

cousteau,

Recently moved so the setup isn't perfect yet, but I'm quite content with the instruments themselves! The Keystep Pro sits at the center of everything but I'm a big fan of playful sequencers at the moment, so I often combine it with the Polyend Play or my iPad for sequencing experimentation. The fact that it can do Midi>CV conversion is invaluable to me, opens up a ton of possibilities.

Currently, I have been messing around with:

  • Modular Rack (probably not worth going into detail here unless people are curious haha)
  • Cobalt8
  • Microfreak + MS70 for FX (not setup atm)
  • Polyend Play
  • Polyend Tracker
  • Meris Mercury7 in the fx loop for reverb (special shout out for this as it's probably my favorite reverb)

The one outlier here is the Polyend Tracker. I really love it but don't often find myself using it with the rest of my gear and am usually using it as a standalone device. Maybe because I like to do a lot of playful experimentation with the rest of my gear, while my brain is a little more intentional with the Tracker? Curious if anyone here has had a similar experience, or has any ideas for creative ways to implement it!

cousteau,

I've already got a couple granular engines in my modular rack but that Lemondrop is hard to ignore. Seems super powerful, especially considering its size! Seems like it can create some really beautiful sounds and textures.

cousteau,

That's an awesome demo, thanks for sharing! It really is appealing...the polyphonic aftertouch that the keyboard version has is also really exciting to me. The only other instrument I've seen with a similar appeal is the Expressive Osmose, which I'm less excited by in terms of sound design workflow.

Greetings

Thought I'd say Hi. Never was much of a Redditor, but I do appear to have arrived at the same time as a lot of them. Got into Modular as a form of occupational therapy following a back injury and built up a small system from a small gifted case and PCB/Faceplate kits. I find the building of the modules at least as enthralling as...

cousteau,

Awesome to hear you went the DIY route! There seem to be some amazing kits out there, and seem like a much cheaper way to get into modular. Would absolutely recommend you go back to fiddling with sounds, if you ever feel the pull. I find that sound design and patch building is the very thing that makes modular special.

Doesn't matter if you're releasing full tracks or just experimenting with sound; as long as you're having a good time, that's all that matters.

cousteau,

Not OP but I like the question haha. I'll throw out two (though the first one is a bit of a cheat answer):

Desmodus Versio - never thought a reverb could be so "playable." It responds so well to modulation and can add a ton of character to simple sounds. I also really love NE modules and their Versio platform, it makes this thing incredibly versatile. Have also enjoyed the Melotus (granular) and Ruina (distortion) firmwares!

Mutable Instruments Tides (v2) - a much simpler and more straightforward module but seems to find its way into almost every patch I build. This was one of the first modules I bought, to add some external CV into my semi-modulars. It can act as an LFO, envelope/cycling envelope, and as an oscilattor (which sounds way better than it has any right to). Fantastic little swiss army knife that is simultaneously intuitive and deep.

cousteau,

I have a Microfreak and really love how immediate and playful it is. Generally I prefer to run it through my modular, so I can run it through effects. Pairing the Microfreak with something like a Zoom MS-70 seems like a no-brainer and would make for a super versatile setup. Especially when you consider how affordable that is as a setup.
