Hamas releases video of three Israeli hostages saying they'll learn 'fate' on Monday (www.standard.co.uk)

The undated 37-second video of Noa Argamani, 26, Yossi Sharabi, 53, and Itai Svirsky, 38, released on Sunday night showed them speaking presumably under duress, pleading with Israel’s government to end the war and get them home....

Nah it’s not just a state. A lot of Ob/Gyn physicians no longer feel comfortable practicing in states with extremely prohibitive abortion laws because it genuinely limits what kind of healthcare they can practice. This limits access to care, which can result in poor outcomes.

Flipboard stops tweeting, launches new podcast about decentralized social apps | TechCrunch (techcrunch.com)

Social magazine app Flipboard had already committed to joining the "fediverse" -- the decentralized social web, which includes apps like Mastodon. Now, it’s doubling down on those ambitions with an announcement that it will stop tweeting while also launching a new podcast devoted to exploring the topic of decentralized social...

I’m happy to hear this but honestly I’m confused as to how flipboard is supposed to work with federated media. I thought it was basically an RSS aggregator? Could someone explain

This reminds me of those hitler quotes that people were duped into agreeing with and then being told it was said by hitler.

These kinds of generalizations do not help the cause on either side. It's only going to help fan the flames. Plenty of Palestinians are just regular citizens who live under the tyrannical rule of Hamas, but would much rather prefer peace. May I ask, do you have personal involvement in this conflict at all? Do you see comments like this helping Israelis, Jews, or Palestinians reaching peace and stability?

Far too many leftists, like their right wing nut counterparts, are contrarians at heart. This is what happens when political ideology becomes a personality trait; it becomes akin to a religion.

hit the nail on the head with that. I've seen so many leftists horseshoe into this perverted self righteousness. and it is even more frustrating when they act like they are directly involved in a conflict they really have nothing to do with.

This is the largest health care strike in US history (www.motherjones.com)

On Wednesday, an estimated 75,000 Kaiser Permanente workers across five states and Washington DC walked out in the largest health care workers strike in US history. After several days of negotiations over fair labor practices and higher wages, company and union members failed to reach a compromise....

Nothing helps me complete typical home tasks like avoiding a work deadline

I will let go of all my normal home maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, laundry, taking out the trash, changing bed sheets, etc., until I have a deadline for work approaching. All of a sudden, I have all the energy in the world to focus on said tasks while I avoid the looming deadline that I must absolutely accomplish if I...

I've worked in genetics settings, and am considering a career in it -- which is partially why I wouldn't want to send my DNA in. I don't really see a point in it because you said, its mostly statistical analysis and, buy and large, isn't very specific.

For lack of better term this privatized genetic screening phenomenon feels like pop science on crack. Spit in a tube, have the cool science company analyze it - find out cool stuff. But when I'm asked about it, I always warn people of the same thing. This is still a relatively new field. Legislation protecting people on the privacy of their genetic code is shaky at best, and the information you get isn't going to be all that useful.

My parents both come from different ethic minority populations so they wanted to learn more about their roots.

taking these tests for medical reasons, or for adopted people

which in response to that - I'd say that that another case could be for people that do have a curiosity of where they came from given other unique familial backgrounds - which is why I mentioned my family. But I agree it's hard to draw the line on cost/benefits for each person and where it's merely novelty versus having legitimate benefit.

for getting a better medical understanding - I really think that it would be better to see a genetic counselor or clinical geneticist. It's still a growing field in medicine so there aren't that many - and they typically work in prenatal and pediatric settings. But it's my hope that as the profession grows, this information will be liaised more by medical professionals - both to guide people in understanding the results of genetic screens and also so that this information is protected under patient privacy laws.

apologies if this was a little scattered. I'm kinda a nerd for genetics and have a lot of thoughts about it - and this was mostly me thinking as I was writing

Reminder that aljazeera is a Quatari state funded media outlet that tends to sensationalize violence against Palestenians and ignore cases where organizations like Hamas perpetrate violence. this is done to support their agenda of eradicating a Jewish state on a land that is home to the Jewish people and is also a place where many Palestenians call home. Aljazeera at it's heart is an anti-semetic organization, run by a government that does not care for Jews, and therefore their anti-zionist reporting often ventures into anti-semitism.

Violence like this is deplorable and should never happen, when it does, should be sanctioned. I do not think this source is unbiased in their reporting and does not make earnest work towards supporting peaceful outcomes in the region.

probably not great - alcohol is a toxin and puts the body under stress to process it. Putting additional stress and strain on the body will hamper recovery. A review article from 2010 I found after a quick google said this

A significant body of literature has established an array of adverse symptoms caused by acute alcohol ingestion. However the notion that alcohol consumption effects performance has not received enough consistent validation to advance beyond being anecdotal

really all this says is that there isn't a strong body of evidence (according to this article) showing negative effects of alcohol on recovery - but that doesn't mean there aren't any.

another review article from 2019 had this to say in the discussion

Only cortisol levels seem to be increased, conversely testosterone, plasma amino acids, and rates of muscle protein synthesis decreased

and

The general findings therefore highlight that muscle function is not altered by alcohol consumption following exercise bouts, however the altered endocrinological asset regarding cortisol and testosterone and the consequent suppressed rates of muscular protein synthesis and reduced circulating levels of amino acids, suggest that long-term muscular adaptations could be impaired

effectively saying that alcohol itself doesn't directly impact recovery or hypertrophy - but downstream effects of alcohol on hormone levels can have a negative impact

but it also comes down to how much you're drinking, and the reasons for drinking. If its like 1-2 drinks per week, that's going to be a much smaller impact than if its a 1-2 drinks every evening to wind down.

People who back into parking spots: Why?

To me, it seems objectively easier to pull into a parking space forward and then back out of the space when you are ready to leave. You don’t have to line up with the lines while driving backwards, and it’s easier to keep from hitting other cars as well. So why back in? To me, the only advantage I can think of is that you...

Much easier to back into a spot compared to pulling in, safer to pull out. And it doesn’t take much longer. Once you know how to do it it’s very very quick

With all due respect - how much discussion about Elon can there really be? Maybe a couple of substack posts here and there to get more insight but realistically it’s just the same thing over and over again. Special man got mad and has been throwing a years long temper tantrum- decimating a company in the process. I don’t think that’s gonna change and I’m pretty tired of seeing him clog up my feed.

I'm all about informed consent - I'm wiling to compromise privacy as long as I know how much I'm compromising in exchange for convenience - using virtual assistants to shoot off texts, make calendar events, etc is invaluable to me for many reasons and it improves QOL more than it harms it - I do what I can to limit how much access there is to my queries, but thats just how I approach it

I'm pretty sure Garmin has a good privacy policy - mozilla seemed to like them - and I got a fenix6 sapphire on ebay used for about $250 and I love it. Way better than my apple watch, particularly because I care more about fitness tracking and hate having texts show up on my watch.

Fluids! Fluids! Fluids!

Honestly just gotta let it run its course - treat the symptoms and don’t let yourself suffer. But the one thing I personally dislike is the combo drugs, as a rule of thumb it’s better to take individual meds instead of something like nyquil/dayquil - it can just get messy with appropriate dosing. Just see what’s in those combos and buy the individual meds if you can - not the end of the world if you use the quils but I think it’s just better overall.

To answer your question though - no, taking meds to manage symptoms won’t prolong the illness. It might make you more likely to physically exert yourself and then make the healing slower but that’s likely gonna be negligible.

Fluids, eat, and rest. Hope you get better soon!
