Honestly, I'm feeling fairly overwhelmed with all the new information I'm trying to absorb. lemmy, kbin, fediverse, instances it's a lot to take in. I've tried reading some kbin guides, lemmy guides, fediverse.

I just want to find a few places where I can learn from others, engage in random conversations and seek advice (like now). Apparently I can do that from just one of these (but at the same time all of them??).

I honestly don't even know where this post is going to show up haha

henry,

@jayglee agree. it's a lot.

i'm going to focus less on the federation and noise, and just learning it like an app.

Whats the difference between a boost and an upvote ? @ernest

henry,

or not, some people do things for the love of it and not for profit. it's very sad that even the very idea of this, seems be lost on on the internet today.

the earliest public online communities were dial in BBS. People would buy 2nd PC's (when PCs cost a couple of grand), get second phone lines (some time more than 1!) modems etc. and set up a dial in BBS because it was their hobby. For the fun of it. For the pleasure of it. For the thrill of it. Some people rock sneakers, some people soup up cars, some people carve wood but they do so because it is a hobby., It makes them happy, they meet new people, they learn new things. The idea of making money from it ? well it never even enters the heads of most of them.

# of revenue stream, and clicks, and engagement are all the bastard children of capitalism , which infects all hobbies like a virus. Skating, fashion, Bmx, gaming, fitness, - nothing is immune from the foul contagion.

immaculate beauty of a federated social media platform like KBIN is that you can host your own instance, a for a sizeable number of users, for like £20 a month on a VPS. It plugs into all the other instances using internet magic, and you can be the boss. If instead you wnant to kick in a couple of quid to your favourite host , have at it. If you're broke, well, you're still welcome.

community is a thing and it will outlive capitalism.

Microsoft should create and launch a Reddit clone, keep the API completely open for client developers (but not data miners), pay top Reddit moderators to move their communities over, and use the project’s data for continuously training their own AI models.

henry,

@gruber ....paid....moderators..... i can't think of anything worse.

Difference between kbin and lemmy

Lately I often read about kbin.social being similar to lemmy but more accessible. So I created an account there to check it out. My experience so far is a little mixed. From kbin I can access all Lemmy posts, although I find the interface less intuitive to join new communities. So from the kbin side it feels like an other Lemmy...

henry,

there is a bit of learning curve.

I found a couple of things :

  • if you go to your preferences, you can get a more famililar reddit look and feel, by adding the top bar, and a few other tweaks.
  • i think that ultimately it wont (shouldn't) matter what 'window' you look through into the fediverse - correct me if i'm wrong. I like kbin a lot, but i', looking at beehaw. i was asked not to join lemmy.ml because of server load issues.
  • i'm not sure how mastodon fits. i guess that's a federated app - but is seems entirely seperate.
henry,

thats the nub of it.

"you must not profit from the content we did not create"

henry,

i got a lifetime ban on a 15y account. Why ? Some guy said I couldnt read, so i said Go outside fatso. And that was that.

henry,

all the data are mine all the money is mine. mine. mine. mine.

a totalitarian content vacuum, they created nothing : everything is written by you, linked by you and curated by you and now they want to charge you for looking at it.

what the fuck happened to the internet.

How has ur lemmy experience been so far?

Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...

henry,

so far so go. i'm an old fart so familiarisation takes longer, and is easily forgotten ! 15 years on reddit before getting a permaban for saying "go outside fatso". Not my proudest moment, but there you go.

reddits downfall is multifaceted, but its certainly not helped by career Mods, who mod 20,30,50 different subs and network extensively.

henry,

yeah, this is to miss the point, isn't it ?

the issue is the division of labour by algorithms working with shonky data, and the potential to have to prosperity dictated by gold stars on a touch screen.

interestingly, the WSJ take a different tone when talking about China's Social Credit, but dont seem have much of problem with us constantly peer review each others behaviour.

henry,

it's astounding how little coverage the BBC give to French riots........Solidarity mon frere

henry,

economically logical perhaps, but that's all. Nothing logical about more work in old age.

henry,

it coincides with me receiving a permanent ban on a 15 year account for saying "go outside, fatso" so I will be weeping no tears.

not my proudest moment, but it falls short of harassment and bullying IMHO.

if you're reading this u/[redacted] i'm sorry for being rude, but seriously, go outside.

henry,

maybe because i'm deep into a sunny afternoon of chicken and beer and my world class cynicism is blunted, but if the corps are doing this it means there is a market. if there is a market, it means there are right minded people and today ill take that
