I see a lot of posts about how they uploaded anti-spez stuff onto reddit, or participated in the nsfw spams/john oliver spams. While I get wanting to let it all out, this ultimately keeps up engagement on reddit rather than bringing it down....
I also feel replacement mods are scabs, but I've been enjoying all the free time I've had lately not browsing reddit. I'm actually getting shit done. I'm ashamed of how much I used that site. I will not go back.
Since news leaked out 2 days ago that Facebook has approached Mastodon developers and admins - requiring non-disclosure agreements first - the whole microverse (i.e. mastodon / pleroma etc, the micro-blogging part of fedi) has been talking about nothing but that and Facebook's imminent entry into the fediverse with an as yet not...
Ugh. Nothing is sacred. Why does everyone want to get rich? We don't do anything for the public good anymore. I hope Jimmy can get an link aggregator up that is hopefully not for profit. I think that is the only way, it was only a matter of time before someone "OpenAI"'d the fediverse.
I'm 32, I remember using the internet before google was a thing, discovering flashy websites, hanging out on all kinds of internet forums and chatrooms, ebaums world, MySpace, new grounds... I rember when YouTube was just starting off and it was exploding with all kinds of content....
I've been thinking of going complete 2003 and going back to flip phones. I'm just tired of the greed over wanting me to see ads. I fucking can't stand ads and go out of my way to avoid them, including monthly memberships like YouTube red. Reddit was trying to force me to use their app so they can collect more data to show me ads.
I haven't been back since the blackout "ended". I am gun shy about deleting my 15 year old account. I fucking hate spez. His face pisses me off. If punchable face wasn't banned he would be on it.
I was thoroughly addicted to reddit, the blackout made me realize that. I like the fediverse, so I'm going to stay here.
Wanted to say it’s pretty cool to see how fast this place has grown in just the past few days and it’s starting to really feel like what Reddit used to be in the good ol days.
CEO Steve Huffman says tech giants should not be able to trawl Reddit’s huge store of data for free. But that information came from users, not the company
They have been running a top 10 website without any idea how to make money off it now they are killing it trying to squeeze profit out of it so these psychopaths can have a wallstreet pay day. I spent 15 years providing content to the site bcz I loved it. I signed up so long ago I don't even remember the agreement I made with then upon sign up. Fuck em.
Among the many changes, the new rules would require batteries in consumer devices like smartphones to be easily removable and replaceable. That's far from the case today...
Digg tried to make money off it's communities ASAP and killed it. Reddit tried the slow burn: build up users for 15 years and then pull the rug. It's hard making money from a site that has all it's users do the work. The only value reddit has is automated infra, which in the days of auto scaling k8s clusters is not that unique.
I'm personally ok with multiple technology instances. It was weird at first, but I think that is by design.
I do agree that user management needs a redesign. I have three fediverse usernames that I created because I was a noob and everytime it asked me to login I would get denied and create an account. This would be absolutely awful for the normies.
This is where IPFS might actually be useful. Also this might help fight the trolls.
With our growth numbers and with kbin finally with Lemmy again, things around the link aggregator fediverse feel more active than ever. Today when browsing all on Jerboa I saw so many more communities, posts, and comments than even yesterday. It's starting to feel like we have some real traction going on here. Let me know if you...
Most people just want to use something without thinking about it. We all have lives to live. I will not give reddit anymore of my time and I wish everyone on reddit and the fediverse well.
These last three days have been a lot more calm for me. I think social media in great quantities is bad. The normies that will continue using reddit are the ones that probably use Instagram as well. I am definitely not one of those. So reddit making this change was its final gift to me after 15 years of teachable moments.

Was the lemmyverse/threadiverse aware that Mastodon has been convulsed for the past 2 days?

Is this what happened to Digg?
I'm way too young to remember Digg. I signed up for Reddit in 2015, and I've heard talks here and there about the migration from Digg, but that's it.
Planning for the future - a flaw in the design of Lemmy (and Kbin)
