I was aware of the fediverse but I'd never gotten round to engaging with it. Came here for something to do during the 3 day Reddit protest blackout and just... never went back to Reddit because it's better here.

I already had a mastodon but I made accounts all over the fediverse (and other alternatives) ended up settling in my first pick - this account at kbin.social. I really love the features and I believe the dev has a lot of vision.

It's exciting being part of something cool.

Ah yes UNRWA, the new Weapons of Mass Destruction.

livus,

@sentient_loom yeah they're still a thing, just very loose-knit. Eg "the Ansars" in this article on Cabo Delgado.

Weirdly enough the movies I've been to with the most audible walk-outs were all good films:

Exotica

Salo

Schindler's list

I think two of them just got too much for people and the other one had them worried they'd wind up on a list.

And for me, it's the snack I just bought to eat now that's last.

It has a lot of footage of the ruins and interviews with kids in Gaza. Which in turn has influenced the other kids on Tiktok.

Half of Gaza is under 18, it's really not surprising there are a lot of them with Tiktok accounts.

@WarmSoda um, the above wasn't my "feelings," it was a description of the content of TikTok based on observations.

My description of the content of Facebook is that it skews older, as well as boomers and gen X it has millennials who are fast ageing out of being a youth demographic.

Facebook is more text-heavy and link-based so its users are more likely to repost news and blog articles. Some of the boomers are not very media-savvy. Boomers also seem more likely to support Israel, I would link this to the fact they still consume network news.

What's different now is the ability of ordinary people to communicate with us without being gatekept by Western media.

I remember a Canadian redditer got shot in the leg by IDF snipers and his colleague who rescued him got killed same day.

At the time his personal account of the events was upvoted and people discussed stuff with him. He was a medic, with a post history about these cool 3D printed field tourniquets. He'd been shot when on duty.

If someone like that posted in Reddit's current iteration I think the response would be far more hostile.

livus,

Ah I'd forgotten how brilliant DermNet is. Thanks for this link!

What a weird law.

It has really awful implications. E.g if you're a Med School professor are you supposed to give a passing grade to someone who wants to treat fever with blood-letting and incantations?

If you're an Engineering professor are you supposed to pass students who hold the view that load bearing rules are a waste of time?

Also, are you no longer to discriminate entry to courses based on grades, since low IQ is a type of intellectual diversity?

I know their intent is to somehow make political points but it has far wider scope.

It scares me how many comments I see on this subject are something to the effect of "people don't deserve human rights unless I am able to empathize/agree with them."

livus,
livus avatar

Whew what a rollercoaster.

Me, reading your comment: Hmm, this comment by @andyburke is right, I was too hotheaded, I should apologize to the original poster.....

tried to make this argument about human rights

Me: ... it is about human rights tho...but maybe I jumped the gun a bit...

Weird how this happens in every thread about the guy. Almost like there are paid posters watching out for this stuff.

Me: .... record scratch followed by laughter. I'd love a job where I was paid to post the stuff I post, though.

Do you seriously think this corner of the fediverse is filled with people paid to change your opinion? These sites are in their infancy, way too small, the only shills around here are for fake Adderall. It's one of the things I like about it.

My advice to the paranoid is get yourself a kbin account so you can literally see who upvotes what. That will end your paranoia about cabals.

At least 65 migrant bodies found in Libya mass grave, says UN (www.bbc.com)

A mass grave containing the bodies of at least 65 migrants has been found in Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has said. The IOM said the circumstances of their deaths and their nationalities are still unknown but they believe they died being smuggled through the desert towards the Mediterranean....

From the article:

An IOM spokesperson said: "Each report of a missing migrant or a loss of life represents a grieving family searching for answers about their loved ones or acknowledging the tragedy of the loss.

"The cost of inadequate action is evident in the increasing human deaths and the disturbing conditions migrants find themselves in."

The organisation said the tragedy highlighted the need for a co-ordinated response to smuggling of migrants and legal migration pathways.

Libya is among the main departure points for migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean to enter Europe. The Geneva-based IOM also called on Libyan authorities and other UN agencies to ensure a dignified recovery, identification and transfer of the remains.

The discovery of the mass grave comes after at least 60 migrants, who set off from Libyan coast, died when a rubber dinghy ran into trouble in the Mediterranean Sea.

The IOM said earlier this month that 2023 was the deadliest year for migrants since records began a decade ago, with at least 8,565 people dying on migration routes worldwide.

Rights court condemns Peru over one of world's most polluted towns (www.rfi.fr)

The Andean city of La Oroya, situated in a high-altitude valley at 3,750 meters (12,300 feet), is home to a heavy metal smelter that has poisoned residents and the environment for almost a century. In 2006, La Oroya residents sued the Peruvian government at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights for allowing the company...

From the article:

The court said the complex "has had a significant impact on the environment, contaminating the air, water and soil."

The ruling also said that "exposure to lead, cadmium, arsenic and sulfur dioxide constituted a significant risk to the health of the victims, and they did not receive adequate medical care from the State."

According to the International Federation for Human Rights, in 2013, 97 percent of La Oroya children between six months and six years of age, and 98 percent between age seven and 12, had elevated levels of lead in their blood.

I really hope they abide by the ruling and it gets cleaned up.

That's my guess. It's definitely someone from 5 Eyes. Collaboration with US military is a bit fraught in NZ because of the antinuclear stance.

livus,

@Maeve not in the current political climate. I will be surprised if NZ media even really pursues it.

Peter Thiel (Palantir) bought citizenship in NZ though. There's likely a lot the NZers don't know about what 5 Eyes entails.

Israel's restrictions to Gaza aid may be war crime, says UN rights office (www.reuters.com)

Israel's restrictions on humanitarian aid for Gaza may amount to a starvation tactic that could be a war crime, the United Nations human rights chief said on Tuesday. The stark appraisal followed a U.N.-backed report on Monday saying famine is likely by May without an end to fighting in the more than five-month war between...

livus,
livus avatar

@Maeve I think it matters. We have a history of war criminals sometimes being brought to justice several decades after their crimes.

That's why it's important to collect evidence even if the current geopolitical climate suggests people act with impunity.

livus,
livus avatar

@Maeve it's not necessarily obvious - many people think I am wrong, and that the status quo can not shift that far in the next 60 years.

Sorry to hear about the head injury - I know how hard they can be to deal with, and I wish you a speedy return to health and confidence in your brain's abilities.
