Channel Islands: Four-year search leads local divers to solve WW1 U-boat mystery (guernseypress.com)

A First World War German submarine last seen in 1917 has been found by a team of Guernsey specialist divers following a four-year search.Lying in more than 70m of water, the wreck of the UC II Class mine-laying submarine UC-18 and that of which they believe to be the British ship which sank her, HMS Lady Olive, have been located...

From the article:

The local team, which included Guernsey Press picture editor Peter Frankland, conducted extensive research to identify three possible target areas to the south and southwest of Guernsey before meticulously scanning the seabed for evidence of the wrecks using state-of-the-art sonar equipment.

After discovering wreckage at four sites the team began carefully planning dives to identify the wrecks which would involve two boats, five divers and four crew....

‘The organisation of the dives has been extremely difficult due to the amount of crew and equipment required, the location of the wrecks and the depth of water they’re in,’ said Mr Taylor.

‘We were limited to diving during periods of slack water which only occur during small neap tides. These had to be coupled with extremely calm sea conditions and good visibility to give us the best chance of completing these technically complicated dives safely.

‘Working so far offshore meant that we had to be especially vigilant when planning our dives as any help, should it be needed, was at least two hours away.’

The UC-18 was one of only a handful of First World War UC Class II U-boats remaining undiscovered and the firefight in which she was lost is the only instance where a submarine and the Royal Navy ship it was attacking were both sunk in the same battle.

Although there were no British casualties in the sinking of the Lady Olive, all 28 crew onboard the UC-18 were killed. As a mark of respect, the team laid a plaque engraved with the names of the German sailors at the base of the 8.8cm gun on the deck of UC-18 to commemorate those lost.

Indonesia recovers two bodies after Rohingya boat capsizes off Aceh (www.reuters.com)

Indonesian authorities recovered two bodies from the shores of West Aceh on Saturday and said local fishermen reported several other drowning victims washed up after a vessel carrying Rohingya migrants capsized off the coast earlier this week. More than 70 Rohingya were "presumed dead or missing", which if confirmed would be the...

From the article:

The bodies had been carried by the current and local fishermen reported several other drowning victims found along the western shore of Aceh province, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Mirza said.

For years Rohingya have been leaving Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where they are generally regarded as foreign interlopers from South Asia, denied citizenship and subjected to abuse.

More than 2,300 Rohingya arrived in Indonesia last year, UNHCR data showed, surpassing the number of arrivals in the previous four years combined.

The 2023 toll of at least 569 Rohingya dead or missing while trying to flee Myanmar or Bangladesh was the highest since 2014, the UNHCR said in January.

I thought they meant "growing up r" as well. First my brain supplied me with "growing up rich".

I'm of the generation which has kids old enough to talk.

They are exasperated that we use computer mice.

They are angry that the environment is still being destroyed even though grown ups know better.

Not sure what will embarrass them when they're older - at the moment it's our clothes, shoes, music, and slang.

All the young kids I know hate them. They think everything is going to be a touchscreen.

Especially when it comes to casual games, literal screams of frustration trying to coordinate mice.

I meant coordinate mice with onscreen movements, not with other mice!

Now you've got me imagining some sort of hellscape where there are different oldschool trackball mice strapped to someone's hands and feet.

Me too. He gish gallops himself into some very weird argument positions.

The first part I straight up ate the onion.

This happened to me too. I'm more conscious, I feel like I have more free time and am more creative. It's a life upgrade somehow.

Pretty sure it's a riff on this Joe Sacco comic from 1993 which has a much better punchline.

@invisiblegorilla they filmed all three at the same time, they had multiple second unit directors.

That's why the actors don't age between movies, there's a seamless progression.

I had the opposite to you and @Cuttlefish1111 I thought the first half was good then it jumps the shark.

Still glad I watched it, I like to riff off a quote "buT tHhe GIRL had to..... do the dishes with scissors" or whatever.

That makes sense. I usually prefer music for those situations, but I can see the appeal of an audiobook. Might try it sometime.

@Maeve oh, yeah he bought land next to a lake and wanted to put a very long, vague building on it.

Definitely one of the shock collar guys, probably has a bunker somewhere. What amuses me is NZ is a very interconnected place and it's impossible to build a secret bunker without someone knowing about it. In any apocalypse everyone'd put their heads together to compare notes, and soon winkle them out.

Israel's restrictions to Gaza aid may be war crime, says UN rights office (www.reuters.com)

Israel's restrictions on humanitarian aid for Gaza may amount to a starvation tactic that could be a war crime, the United Nations human rights chief said on Tuesday. The stark appraisal followed a U.N.-backed report on Monday saying famine is likely by May without an end to fighting in the more than five-month war between...

Glad to know you're receiving support and have a good prognosis.

I didn't think about the gaslighting aspect. Silver lining: there are plenty of confidently incorrect people online too, so if you make the occasional blunder nobody will bat an eye!

I think it's not a bad way to be; you're probably in better company!

Betrand Russell complained that "the fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts," but Dunning Kruger syndrome makes me think that having doubt is not necessarily as bad as it sounds.

@Maeve that is an intriguing one. I'd forgotten about the Drake equation. Our lives are changing so fast it seems possible.

I find myself sort of torn when it comes to space (and art). On one hand I find the resources spent on it really questionable when there's so much in the world we still need resources for. And then on the other hand my mind ... wants to have nice things to contemplate!

@TamperTanuki I posted this to random, but it wasn't meant to be a comment about the content of random.

I just found this piece of spam hilarious!
