I don't agree. There's a point at which you have to step away from being a cog in a genocide.

She has already tried to effect change:

Across the federal government, employees like me have tried for months to influence policy, both internally and, when that failed, publicly. My colleagues and I watched in horror as this administration delivered thousands of precision-guided munitions, bombs, small arms and other lethal aid to Israel and authorized thousands more, even bypassing Congress to do so. We are appalled by the administration’s flagrant disregard for American laws that prohibit the US from providing assistance to foreign militaries that engage in gross human rights violations or that restrict the delivery of humanitarian aid.

@FaceDeer

If it's a scam then at this point it's one of history's biggest and longest-running.

Kind of an overstatement. It hasn't even been 20 years. If it were a scam it'd be nowhere near the scale and timeframe of, say, Papal Indulgences.

This isn't anything to do with your wider argument btw, just me nitpicking. Didn't know you'd relocated to fedia.io, was that during the downtime?

@solrize yeah it was really annoying, they've undone a decade of good work just because of tobacco lobbyists.

It wasn't a campaign issue, just an unpleasant surprise policy change.

Do you have some kind of subconscious awareness of interests you already have or know you eventually will take deep dives into at some point in life?

I mean like awareness that, just under the surface, there are deep explorations waiting for the right time and place to emerge; things you’ve set aside or placed on the back burner but will tackle eventually/many you already have tackled....

At what number of grains of sand does a non-pile graduate into being a pile?

I’m of the view that this is a semantic question where we have a word, “pile”, that describes a general amount but doesn’t have a specified quantity to it, and so the only way we can determine the amount of units required to constitute a pile at the bare minimum, is through public consensus on the most commonly shared...

I agree with @spittingimage. "Pile" implies height.

I would call it a pile as soon as it reaches pile-shape. Shape, not quantity, is the determining factor.

As per the media report, under the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU), Bangladesh has agreed to allocate 190 acres of land in Kurigram for the establishment of a special economic zone intended for Bhutanese investors.

Two more Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed between Bhutan and Bangladesh. Thanks, that article looks interesting.

Yeah the demented British colonial plan of "let's split it into two areas, govern one in Arabic with Sharia law and the other one as a Christian nation, and then treat it as one country at Independence" was yet another example of the legacy of colonialism casting a long shadow.

If you ever want a deep dive I'd recommend Sudan: Race Religion and Violence by Jok Madut Jok.

Lawmakers in Thailand overwhelmingly approve a bill to legalize same-sex marriage (apnews.com)

Lawmakers in Thailand’s lower house of Parliament have overwhelmingly approved a marriage equality bill hat would make the country the first in Southeast Asia to legalize equal rights for marriage partners of any gender. The bill passed its final reading with the approval of 400 of the 415 members of the House of...

From the article:

Danuphorn Punnakanta, a spokesperson of the governing Pheu Thai party and president of a committee overseeing the marriage equality bill, said in Parliament that the amendment is for “everyone in Thailand” regardless of their gender, and would not deprive heterosexual couples of any rights.

“For this law, we would like to return rights to the (LGBTQ+ group). We are not giving them rights. These are the fundamental rights that this group of people … has lost,” he said.

Lawmakers, however, did not approve inclusion of the word “parent” in addition to “father and mother” in the law, which activists said would limit the rights of some LGBTQ+ couples to form a family and raise children.

Thailand has a reputation for acceptance and inclusivity but has struggled for decades to pass a marriage equality law.The new government led by Pheu Thai, which took office last year, has made marriage equality one of its main goals.

Old film you should watch: Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead (dir Gary Fleter, 1995) - SCENE (m.youtube.com)

Almost ignored when it came out, this underrated, strangely poignant but light hearted crime film has a great cast (Andy Garcia, Christopher Walken, Treat Williams, Steve Buscemi, Christopher Lloyd, Fairuza Balk..) and some unforgettable lines....

There's also not a lot of awareness. I'd like to see it given more public discussion in our countries.

Thanks, didn't see that about Kenya. That's pretty interesting. Their legislature's getting pretty robust these days; they're firm against the troops into Haiti thing as well.

I agree about Worldcoin. Dystopian is definitely the word for it.

It's baffling to me that there's little public pushback on it but I can see that what it collects could be quite useful for surveillance capitalism and the military industrial complex.
