Saudi Arabia-Iran rapprochement promotes regional peace, security: Iraq’s president (english.alarabiya.net)

The reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran has a positive impact on the region in terms of peace and security, Iraq’s president said during a meeting with Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator in Baghdad on Tuesday.
Saudi Arabia and Iran announced in March that they had reached an agreement, brokered by China, to reestablish diplomatic relations after seven years of no formal ties.

“The rapprochement between Iran and the countries of the region and the restoration of relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a positive factor for the consolidation of security and peace,” Iraqi state news agency INA quoted President Abdul Latif Rashid as telling Ali Bagheri-Kani.

The Iraqi president also “stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between Iraq and Iran in the fields of energy and trade,” INA said.

Relations between Iran and Iraq, which were engaged in an eight-year war in the 1980s, have significantly improved since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein during the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Iraq has emerged as a vital economic partner for Iran, particularly as Tehran faces international sanctions due to its nuclear program. In return, Iran provides Iraq with gas, electricity, and consumer goods.

Under the deal signed in March, Riyadh and Tehran agreed to reopen embassies and consulates in each other’s territories and implement security and economic cooperation agreements that were signed over 20 years ago.

Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran in 2016 following an attack by pro-regime protesters on its embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad.

Iran reopened its embassy in Riyadh last month. Saudi Arabia has not yet said when it will reopen its embassy in Tehran.

So what you are saying is, if I dig a hole that doesn't go anywhere, then that's not really a hole?

livus,

That's fascinating. So most of what I would call "holes" are what, in topographical terms, hollows? Depressions?

A guy named James R Simon.

It wasn't a spur of the moment decision, either. The lemmings were brought from Manitoba to Alberta and put on turntables and repeatedly thrown off the cliff.

It's super messed up and weird.

Yes that's an accurate account according to everything I've read on this.

What am I supposed to do/say as an expatriate Brit when asked what I'm doing for the 4th?

My family doesn’t celebrate it (bc we never did growing up in the UK), nor do I begrudge anyone their freedom. Anyways, happy independence day y’all. If you need me I’ll be sipping tea in the middle of a wide open field wearing my ceremonial red coat.

Sojourner workers are also usually called "immigrants" not "expats", especially if they are from non-western nations.

Like @kennydidwhat says, there is a race/ethnicity component to it.

An American doctor in Dubai is called an "expat" while a Filipino nanny in America is colloquially called an "immigrant" even if they both fully intend to return to their home countries.

I agree with this advice. In my mind, the sales person is there to ring up the sale of the product I have chosen. Not to advise me on what to choose.

From the article:

China and Honduras started talks over a free trade pact on Monday, the Central American country's government announced in a post on social media, in the latest advance between the two nations and their recent diplomatic and economic opening.

Honduras economy ministry dubbed the day "historic" in a post on Twitter.

Eduardo Reina, the Honduran foreign minister, told reporters earlier on Monday that China's deputy trade minister will visit Tegucigalpa on July 6-8 to participate in trade talks.

Last month, Beijing approved Honduran imports of bananas, coffee and shrimp.

The start of trade negotiations comes after Honduras broke off its longstanding ties with Taiwan in March, and moved to establish relations with mainland China and its massive economy, the world's second-biggest.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) a worrying humanitarian and medical crisis is unfolding, especially in the North Kivu region, where the resurgence of the M23 armed group has led to an increase in violence since early 2023.

This resurgence has forced thousands of people to flee their homes, seeking safety and refuge in neighbouring countries...

In the North Kivu region, particularly around Goma, approximately 600,000 displaced people are living in desperate conditions. People on the move lack access to adequate food, shelter, and protection, leaving them vulnerable to malnutrition and violence...

While the situation in North Kivu demands immediate attention, another forgotten emergency unfolds in Ituri province. Intense intercommunal violence and armed clashes have displaced approximately 156,000 people, exacerbating an already extended conflict...

More than 30,000 people from DRC have fled into Uganda since August 2022. Many of them passed through the Nyakabande transit centres in western Uganda.

Orkney could leave the UK to become a self-governing territory of Norway after its council opted to explore “alternative forms of governance”.

The archipelago off the north coast of Scotland will also consider changing its legal status within Britain as it seeks to provide more economic opportunities.

A motion has been put forward by the Orkney Islands council leader, James Stockan, to explore its “Nordic connections”, as well as looking at the governance structures of crown dependencies such as Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man.

Orkney was under Norwegian and Danish control until 1472, when the islands were given to Scotland as security for Margaret of Denmark’s dowry on her marriage to King James III of Scotland...

Although the motion does not commit the council to any of the options, the officials’ report said any constitutional change would probably require a combination of petitions, referendums and legislation at Holyrood and Westminster.

The motion is to be discussed by the council on Tuesday.

From the article:

The new building is an addition to the existing facilities in Phang-nga that are operated by a local non-governmental organization. The group has struggled with a surge in the number of children arriving from Myanmar with their families since a military coup two years ago.

Japan's government provided about 13 million yen, or nearly 90,000 dollars, in financial assistance for the construction...

The executive director of the non-governmental group, Htoo Chit, thanked Japan for providing the new facility. The official said Myanmar's educational system has been paralyzed, and that the group's goal is to provide higher education and help migrant children find jobs in Thailand.

Oba Yuichi, a senior official at the Japanese embassy in Thailand, said Japan is committed to helping to provide educational opportunities for children from Myanmar. He added that, given the worsening situation in Myanmar, Japan plans to continue to provide neighboring Thailand with humanitarian assistance for children.

From the article:

The Friday evening accident occurred at a location known for vehicle crashes near the Rift Valley town of Londiani, which is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of the capital, Nairobi.

Officers at the scene counted 51 bodies, but more people were believed to be trapped in the wreckage, Rift Valley police commander Tom Odera told The Associated Press.

The Kenya Red Cross Society said on Saturday 32 people were injured and hospitalized, and asked Kenyans to donate blood. It also said heavy rainfall interrupted rescue efforts and people were still trapped in wrecked vehicles.

Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen visited the scene on Saturday morning and said the government would relocate markets away from the highways to prevent such future accidents.

President William Ruto tweeted a condolence message to bereaved families describing the accident as "distressing" and urging motorists to be "extra cautious."

Witnesses quoted by local media said the truck veered off the major highway and hit several vehicles before hitting pedestrians and traders. Witnesses shared photos of the vehicle wreckages mangled beyond recognition.
