For example, if I’m in the middle of the woods camping and drinking, should I be able to drive my car to escape a forest fire?

The problem, of course, being that if an emergency override of any kind exists for such situations- then that override can always be used, making the restrictions null and void. which means all systems were simply added cost and maintenance headaches passed onto the consumer for zero net benefit.

Sure maybe they could make an always online system like onStar that would let you request an override to be reviewed by a person… but that’s fucking hilarious to think any manufacturer is going to take on that cost, they’d make it a mandatory subscription for some stupid AI override bot, and that is an even bigger pile of fucking nope.

darth_helmet,

The graphical user interface.

They don’t invent it (xerox PARC did), but Apple correctly identified that the user experience of existing computer systems was holding it back from being a thing everyone owns, and made computers a bad fit for many types of work that seem extremely obvious now (digital media creation particularly)

They did this more or less again with the smartphone: business folks and super nerds were the smartphone market before Apple. Now it’s the average person’s computer.

simple,

The graphical user interface.

A million times this. Not only did they popularize the ideas, but MacOS’s UI design was so ahead of its time that it’s barely changed since then. It was by far the most polished operating system at the time. Old Apple actually was innovating while the market was kind of stagnant.

MacOS Leopard screenshot

This screenshot was in 2007. The competition was Windows Vista. It’s a night and day difference. I had this version of the iMac at the time and was super impressed, even if I did switch back to Windows a couple of years later. Looking back at it, it still looks quite “modern”.

YSK: You can search (most of?) lemmy as a search engine

Due to the nature of fediverse, you can’t just do a “site:lemmy” search as you’d do with reddit (site:reddit.com). I was searching for ways to do it on my firefox browsers and I came to a solution that searches 21 different instances simultaneously, which I consider to be a big part of lemmy (I also include kbin...

The Hill: Powerful Members of Congress are dead set on killing UFO Transparency (thehill.com)

Bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) aimed to establish a process with the ostensible goal of revealing the existence of “non-human intelligence” to the public. But the legislation, which is co-sponsored by three Republican and two Democratic senators, is now in jeopardy....

Moms for Liberty members call the cops on Florida librarians (popular.info)

Two members of Moms for Liberty, a right-wing activist group, have reported several Florida school librarians to law enforcement. They claimed they had evidence that librarians were distributing "pornography" to minors and requested that law enforcement officers be dispatched. This represents a serious escalation of the tactics...

totallynotaspy,

Tapley told Popular Information that Vicki Baggett, an English teacher in Escambia County, has been "helping us." Baggett, who Popular Information interviewed earlier this year, has challenged hundreds of books in public school libraries, including many that have LGBTQ characters or address racism. Baggett told Popular Information that she challenged When Wilma Rudolph Played Basketball — the inspirational story of a Black woman who overcame racial prejudice to become an Olympic champion — because it would make white students "feel uncomfortable" as "they are being white-shamed.”

Like what the actual fuck is with these loons, people like her are why the Germans were forced to observe and cleanup camps after WW2. If it makes you uncomfortable maybe try and learn how not to be a racist, imaginary-friend worshiping fuck.

My guess is that r/beansinthings migrated as a group and started shitposting. It's funny at first, but quickly becomes either a sad waste of beans or unpleasantly disgusting. If I'm being honest it' usually a combination of the two.

Elkaki123,

I agree but with slight differences, I don’t think it’s only about power but more on the first thing, they have built communities for over a decade, to just leave is extremely difficult when you have poured this much work and time into the thing, it might be like an abusive relationship but they still love the places they’ve built.

That being said, some of mods have left big subs, but it’s kind of difficult to get everyone on board.

Lastly I do think this is impactful, it literally strips one of the most “prestigious” and well recognized sub of all the functions that made it special, only doing the bare minimum to keep it alive

it’s a moment that has shifted the culture of Reddit forever. And shifted the internet with it.
it’s the kind of shake-up that makes users realize the value they give to tech companies—for free—even if they just mean to give it to the community.

And when those companies tread you like sh*it for all you've done for them, it's time to pack up your bags and move elsewhere.

It's really sad to see what's happening with reddit, but don't forget, it's we - the users - that have all the power to build up communities, not reddit nor any other company, and how we've been able to make reddit grow from nothing and thrive, we can do the same wherever else we want, let's just hope we can keep the fediverse clear of greedy pigs.

tbird83ii,

Also, the Kbin dev expressly stated he isn't ready for a massive migration, and the current influx has caused him no end of stress. We want to keep him around and not drive him insane.

Found an issue or bug on kbin.social? Help report it. We're keeping track of issues and working on improvements daily (codeberg.org)

There's a heap of devs working on bug fixes and improvements to the kbin.social website. If you run into a bug or find something strange, it would be great if you can report it on codeberg....
