TIL in the Carboniferous Period, no fungus existed to decompose trees. They just grew on top of each other up and up.

The weight of the trees was so great that the ones on the bottom got squished and became coal. That’s where coal is from. Bonus fact: the whole time this was happening, sharks were hunting in the oceans. Sharks are older than trees and fungus!

oo1,

Trees breed by putting their babies into extremely resilient, heat and cold protected stasis pods that can go centuries without care and attention in the right conditions - like suviving an ice age or forest fire.

Human babies are wimps by comparison - most of them would die after only a few days left outside at 0 degrees C.

Humans probably will survive too - but how many?
Elon + all this 3 mates.

oo1,

A lot of trickle down economics fans in this thread.

oo1,

Things like freetube seems to be basically a simple yt front-end.

I don't know what happens if a significant amount of yt users used freetube. but that probably won't happen.

I find it a lot more pleasant to use than yt.

oo1,

Control and/or ownership of the means of production should be more distributed among or more accountable to the people who use those means.

oo1,

That's for schoolgirls. Now here's a course with some chest hair.

oo1,

+1 for debian.
No need to mess around with debian derivatives for whatever pointless extra widgets they have.
It's good enough for most stuff and has "allow nonfree drivers" choice which helps with annoying hardware problems of the past.

If you don't care about desktop env, you probably don't care about wayland vs xorg either.
So I'd try XFCE, simple, basic, lightweight, fast, probably not the most modern or flashy,
but you're getting to work faster.

Hah, Dirty Blvd by Lou Reed:

Give me your hungry, your tired, your poor - I'll piss on 'em
That's what the Statue of Bigotry says
Your poor huddled masses, let's club 'em to death
And get it over with and just dump 'em on the boulevard

oo1,

it is what it is.

Isn't the whole point of git that the repo is cloned in a million places. You can switch the remote repo really easily?

Maybe i'm wrong; I stopped using github years ago. And I don't do a lot of collaborative stuff, so I'm happy with just local git + rsync, local backups for most things. Maybe it has loads of unique features I've never noticed.

I'm sure there are ways to scrape other data off the platform too. For example:
https://docs.codeberg.org/advanced/migrating-repos/

I'm not saying the alternatives are necessarily better for every project. Maybe github really is best for some - but it is a choice of the project to use github. They can move if they prefer the set of features of another repository.

I'm not convinced by anyone using "critical mass" justification for choosing github, that sounds like stockholm syndrome even though you have a key to the door.
"Too lazy to switch" that's legitimate; if a wee bit dissapointing.
"Doesn't allow my special sauce proprietary licence" - well . . .

oo1,

Wasn't that already more or less proven by bill and ted?

oo1,

Darth Vader was obviously a very heavy smoker in his younger days, probably 40-a-day at least.
Never seen anakin with a cigarette.

oo1,

no way, are you saying that darth vader might be

luke skywalkers father?

i have to use microshite crap every day.
It outdoes oracle at generating curse words.
and it gets worse. i'd take windows 2000 or nt4 over whatever shit they force on me at work.

oo1,

humans too.
i think if you attribute car killings to humans they beat mosquitos by a decent margin.

oo1,

i'd do some intellectual property reform.
some banking reform - more local / peer group/long term lending requirements, less fickle international finance. (and less fucking mortgage bubbles!)
some small business support / starter initiatives - link that in with how banks work.

i'd consider lobbying for some government sposored work to generate open source plans and enable production processes for useful tools - Okay that isn't going to happen , , ,

but it's not all or nothing, but you can do things to help some more workers control and access more of their tooling even if its not outright ownership of the end to end production process.

(By the way i'm basically arguing for a more "free" market in the ecnomic sense (easy access for a large number of small scale producers). . . which is exactly not what large-scale capitalists want.
They want a market "free" from any thing that might regulate their attempts to secure economic power and their abiity to use it to generate supernormal prices/profits.)

Progress doesnt happen in 4-5 year political cycles thats a hard one to improve without an electorate capable (any maybe secure enough) to thing about the longer term. Odd that it was extreme econmic and political uncertainty that brought out the likes of FDR and other post-war that people were most willing to think long term when it came to their governemnts - I guess it brought out all sorts of "crazies".

The big one in terms of bloodshed is land reform - and it has been done in a few places - sort of post-colonial type situations - but granted it does ususally have blooodshed. It's a personal judgment what degree is "excessive bloodshed".

oo1,

do you not play in a hall of mirrors?

oo1,

I think the term the OP used was "faceless conglomorate".

I heard Matt Stone's face was ripped off by Scuzzlebutt, and Trey Parker was conglomerated into a dawson's creek trapper keeper, so seems like a fair answer to me.

oo1,

we've got a new cycle lane with dedicated lights near me - though only activated by a beg-button.
except you can press the button sall you want ant it'll stay on red all the time.

unfortunately due to the concrete separator i can't nip over into the main lane and use that lane on green.
so i just have to run the red. almost every bike trip i make is lawbreaking for me.

oo1,

i've no useful comment to add, but for those who don't click

Horse carcasses therefore also had to be removed from the streets. The bodies were often left to putrefy so the corpses could be more easily sawn into pieces for removal.

oo1,

thanks i'll try to delete some .

it's like trying to cancel a subscription

I prefer Wayland (.social) though

Context: Twitter is currently rebranding it self as X.com, which is the bottom logo. X.org is a FOSS implementation of the The X Window System which is being slowly replaced by the newer Wayland display server. Because of the Twitter rebrand Someone decided to make Wayland.social, to parody the X.org to Wayland transition.

oo1,

yeah
that black and white dotty screen where the mouse is a black X.
. . . after the 25th edit.
what a time to be alive.
