Having never owned a house or really had a yard of my own, I got pretty excited and decided to do some ad-hoc landscaping. Built some raised beds for vegetables, and just laying in some organic shaped in-ground beds for low water decorative plants. Gonna fill the rest in with gravel. Any pointers?

You have room for a lot more soil in those raised beds. I recommend my father's augmented Mel's mix recipe, he's grown insanely large vegetables with it.
Here's the per-batch formula, multiply as needed to fill.

  • 1 bag perlite (typically around 8 quarts)
  • 1 bag vermiculite (sub with perlite if region is very rainy)
  • 1 bag peat moss (or coconut coir, if available)
  • 1 bag of manure (this bag will be larger at 1 cubic ft, or around 29 quarts)
  • 10 gallons of compost (check your local landfill, ours just gives it away)

My father and I usually mix this by rolling it with a tarp.

I've always envisioned such a device to be structured like window slat blinds.
The slats lay horizontal when not in use to minimize view obstruction, and rotate into position on command.

It's an indoors office plant. If it ends up leaving the pot, it'll likely end up getting rolled over by some chair wheels.

Given the soil mix I used, it'll likely be very happy for the rest of its life.

Could anyone recommend me some good boots that have good arch support that wont give me blisters. I've got a pair of Merrell hiking shoes and some basic heavy duty insoles from Dr. Scholls. My only issue was getting used to the lack of material under the toes, causing them to angle down a bit.

I recommend starting with the insoles first, see if they provide the support you need. If that doesn't help, I recommend escalating to a doctor. They can provide better shoe recommendations than us randos on Lemmy.
