I started fairly recently (probably somewhere between nine and seven years ago; time isn’t my strong suit, cut me some slack) on Debian. Now I’m on Arch Linux.
About 3 years. I wasn't good with computers because I mostly just didn't want to mess with them, due to Microsoft being who they are. I started with Ubuntu, went to Arch, Nixos, and now Gentoo is my standard. I got into it because my brother who's a security programmer recommended it to me. I use much, much more linux than my brother does now. I don't have any proprietary systems in my home now. All is FOSS.
I use the bin kernel. I don't change anything that is kernel level, so the default is fine. It cuts down on updates and install by a lot, but more important is that it's stable. I personally love gentoo, it's my favorite and I've tried basically everything.

Somehow I also met my girlfriend on instagram. I was running a review page at the time for extreme films and music. I made a the joke, "the higher the hair, the closer to god" on a mutual online friend's post, and she liked the comment. I already had a thing for her, so I decided to message her. I don't remember what I said, but she said she knew I absolutely had to be autistic within a few minute's based on that message and the way my reviews were done. Now we've been together 5 years, so it panned out pretty good. Pullin goth bitches with my autism swag.
It's a new year — about 6 months since that Reddit migration occurred — and Kbin progressed a ton in 2023. What are your thoughts on it? How much value have you gotten out of it, and what would you like to see in the future?
I like it, functionality wise. But, there's barely any content beyond gaming and linux. Also, as time goes on, I'm seeing more of the stupid attitudes that were all over reddit. I'm using it less and less. I actually find myself on 4chan more, at least there the arguments are funny.
Like 10 years ago I put 4 bucks on my steam account and bought as many dime csgo skins as possible. I don't think I've ever bought any other microtransactions.
I know you're on ubuntu, but installing programs depends on your distribution. Some programs are in your software library, some aren't. But there will always be a way to get the program. For instance, I use Gentoo and Mullvad. The way I set it up is with Wireguard so I control it through the terminal, this is because Gentoo has no mullvad app. Otherwise, you can often add new libraries to your system. Again, on Gentoo Steam is not in my repository by default. So, I added the steam repository to my system so I could get it. For Mullvad, I'm pretty sure they offer a deb package, which Ubuntu can use. Otherwise, some other distributions offer a mullvad app in their repository by default. Try other distributions and see what clicks. A lot of linux is experimentation. I personally prefer doing a lot of things fairly manully, so I use Gentoo with essentially only a terminal for control. Linux Mint, Devian, Arch, Void, Nix, Gentoo; there's tons of choices so there's going to be something that you click with.
I’m going with this Dell and returning my Lenovo Slim 7 Pro. In my previous thread saying I switched to Windows I read that Dells offer great compatibility. I ordered this Dell XPS 13 and plan on going with Pop OS. Thoughts on this? Good choice?...
Music, actually making it. My parents are fans of music, having gotten me into it. But they're not really artistic. I started recording and releasing music when I was around 14 and have been keeping that going for a decade now. They never had any urge to do that, and are pretty content with not making things.
I make electronic music and ask for money every christmas. This year, I got a new synth and my family didn't know what it was for. I shared my the demo I made with them and everyone was surprised, they had no clue that's what it was used for.
Debian, don't like apt.
Arch, breaks too much.
NixOs, just don't need the tools it provides.
Any fork of a mainline distro because it's never as good as the root.
I used arch for a while, but got sick of running repairs every few weeks. I use Gentoo now, it's stable and good. I have a fuck ton of ram and a good cpu, I also take advantage of binary packages from time to time. I don't really need to install new things that much after having done the initial install.
The arch breaks were always related to keys. I would run an update and there would always be an error related to the keys. Never had a breakage due to confs.
I use it, been using it for a while. Both my desktop and laptop run it. I like it a lot and find it really easy to use. Amytime I find an issue I can pretty quickly fix it and keep my system clean. Games run great, my music production software is great, it's fast, and just overall very enjoyable to use.
Hi, everybody Recently, a guy noticed that I was using it and asked why? For me it because in Linux many things are done through the terminal because Linux has many different desktop environments...
I only tried a tiling WM for a few days several years ago. I am ok using the terminal but not everything can be done easily there. In the screenshots of people setups, there are always fancy terminals. Are tiling WM good also for other GUI a part from terminals?
It can be used for other stuff. I use dwm and find that on occasion some programs aren't nice in dwm or don't work well. So, i suggest having both a tiling and a floating.
I can sense this is going to get downvoted probably. I know you guys probably love all aspects of the game so it’s understandable. But I’m not into story based games. I’m into more active gameplay (mostly combat/adventure), of which there is a lot in Cyberpunk that’s actually good. I just want to know how to get the most...
I chose streetkid but started skipping all cutscenes in the final hours cause I really don't care. The characters and world is so boring but the gameplay is good. I'd say in most situations you can skip dialogue and choose first option with no problems at all.
Yeah, I'm proud that I have self control and have maintained a lifestyle that many people fail at. I'm proud to be associated with a community of people that live the same way. It's better than being proud of how much booze you can down or how high you can get.

Where, and when, did you start using Linux? Where are you now?

What's your current favorite distro that isn't Arch, Debian or Fedora?
I’m wondering what the current favorite distros are besides the most popular ones like Arch, Debian and Fedora.

What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?
What distros have you tried and thought, "Nope, this one's not for me"?
I’ve been using Linux Mint since forever. I’ve never felt a reason to change. But I’m interested in what persuaded others to move.
Why do you use the terminal?
