First all the bs with Twitter and Elon, then Reddit having an exodus to Lemmy (not complaining lol), then Twitch. Are we like, in an alternate self healing dimension or something?
For example: I tried to search all 3 communities from sopuli.xyz featured in this comment https://kbin.social/m/lemmy@lemmy.ml/t/2938/Which-subreddits-would-you-most-like-to-see-on-Lemmy/comment/6790/...
Just got back from my local 7/11 to get some soda, and it was a mile (technically 0.8 but shut), was thinking it was absolutely hellish to walk up there due to naturally having weak muscles n shit like that....
I saw Jerboa while scrolling through random apps to potentially install, and became excited that finally there's a REDDIT alternative as well, instead of just Twitter. Mastodon might be nice, but I don't use Twitter, and I probably won't use Mastodon, either. Reddit, on the other hand, oh man......
Exactly! It's a real shame when a subreddit with lots of content, history, and human socialization and activity just gets taken down, and it just becomes... gone.
Also Rest In Peace Aaron Hillel Swartz, you were done wrong, and you improved the world with your existence and intentions!
@nutomic and I are the main devs for lemmy, but we're pretty bad about telling ppl about it... probably the reason we've had slow but steady growth, except for moments like these. It's a huge help if ppl can tell others about it, so we can spend more time coding.
As you may have heard, Reddit’s decided to pull a Twitter and start charging an extortionate amount of money for access to their previously-free API, in order to drive third-party clients like Apollo and RIF into extinction. Under Reddit’s proposed pricing, …
It applies to both for now. I opened a thread about this yesterday and as Kichae said, it's something the dev is experimenting with and is open to discussing. They also helpfully shared a roundup of links to past discussions on this topic.
For now I've created a separate Fediverse account for my Kbin activity (this one!) which seems to be what most people are doing on Lemmy anyway, but I agree it'll be nice to change Kbin's behavior so it's a less jarring experience for followers on other Fediverse apps.
I'm resetting windows 10 on my Thinkpad T580 for work but would like to create a partition for linux. It's an older laptop and really chugs through games like Minecraft or RuneScape but I enjoy playing relaxing games while I listen to audiobooks at night. I grew up using windows which is why I've mostly used Ubuntu and ZorinOS...
@argv_minus_one IDK for Lemmy specifically, as I'm a Mastodon user and am currently commenting from there. On Mastodon it's an option under your account settings when you click the "edit profile" button; I would imagine Lemmy puts it in a similar place.
IMO they should have done what Geocaching.com did: limit the third party API to premium users. That way they would boost Reddit premium and app developers wouldn't have to deal with payment themselves. They could simply warn users that the app will only work when they use Reddit premium and that's it.
I am aware that this would still mean many users wouldn't be able to use third party apps, but it would be better than what they propose currently and it would also seem more fair (IMO).
It would also not necessarily kill commercial reddit apps. There are paid Geocaching apps around, that still need you to be a premium Geocaching user. And they somehow seem to survive.
Again: I would prefer it stays the way it is, but if they want to charge, then better just charge the user directly instead of fanning out the problem to EVERYONE.
Neither. I was banned from /r/Android because I prefer a Google Pixel over a Samsung device (yay, corrupt mods!)
I forgot, and I commented using one of my many alts. I was temporarily suspended from Reddit as a whole for "ban evasion".
My friends visited, who have Reddit accounts, and when they connected to my WiFi Reddit immediately perma-banned ALL of us, including all of my brand accounts for my company.
Reddit allowing random strangers to essentially get you perma-banned because you prefer a different phone is ridiculous. 🥲

Seriously, what's up with big sites literally dying as we speak?

Search for remote magazines/communities not always works.

Do you use reddit mostly through the app or web?
Because I only use web, on mobile and desktop. I can't live without adblock.
Reddit: Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is. (mastodon.social)
