NEW: The Cass Review conducted focus groups with gender diverse youth and young adults who had personal experience with gender-affirming care in England. Then it buried them.

Read about the hidden youth perspectives and experiences of the Cass Report on Assigned Media.

Trying to figure out bridging my BlueSky account to the Fediverse so people have the option to follow it if they like. I haven't managed to follow it here yet, but if/when I figure that out I'll share the info about how to follow it from here.

e_urq,
@e_urq@journa.host avatar

OK, you should be able to follow me on BlueSky from here with this:

@assigned.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy

At the moment I'm seeing a profile but no posts (and new posts haven't gone through) but my hope is that's a hiccup and it will figure itself out soon.

NEW: JK Rowling has become so toxic even fellow transphobes and self-identified moderates are distancing themselves from her.

That's right, today I've been writing about the latest Rowling psychodrama, and what to make of it.

Hey, Mastodon.

I am sorry, but I'm struggling to keep up with three social media feeds.

I'm not leaving Masto, but I haven't been posting as consistently as other sites, and I want to acknowledge that, apologize, and encourage you to find me else where.

I'll still be around, but if you want to keep current, this feed may not be the best way to do so.

e_urq,
@e_urq@journa.host avatar

@dgoldsmith BSky, which is unfortunately more active and therefore financially helpful to me. I had hoped Masto would be the spot, and Im not leaving, just acknowledging when one slips off my plate its this place

e_urq,
@e_urq@journa.host avatar

@dgoldsmith Oh, wonderful- yeah I'll have a look at that as soon as I have a spare moment, and then I can point to it with this account. Thank you so much!

Benrayngate continues into it's second day on Assigned Media.

(I let Alyssa write about Ben Ryan again after he demanded 16 corrections, such as a correction to the headline because he denies he was "raging" at trans women.)

e_urq,
@e_urq@journa.host avatar

I want to be totally transparent about this- I asked Alyssa to write a second time on this for two reasons:

  1. She is a trans woman living in poverty.

  2. I'm still emotionally recovering from being arrested while I was covering the UVA protest on Saturday.

So, now would be a great time to sign up for the newsletter and show your support, if you're inclined to. We also have one-time donation options!

ONLY ON ASSIGNED:

Following critiques of the Cass team's methods that began on social media, I investigated and found the systematic reviews relied on by the Cass Review changed their methodology without explanation from their pre-registered research plan.

This lends credence to talk of bias in the Cass Report.

Title IX is back in the culture war, with conservatives melting down over the idea that LGBTQ+ students deserve protection from sex discrimination. Today on Assigned, Alyssa Steinsiek tells you everything you need to know about the Title IX changes.

NEW STORY ONLY ON ASSIGNED:

The NYT obituary of Lori and George Schappell went live riddled with misgendering and references to a previous name George used before coming out as trans in 2007.

Behind the scenes, GLAAD pushed the NYT to respect George as he had lived.

GLAAD's efforts met with limited success: While the NYT removed misgendering, the story still uses a female name for George a whopping NINE TIMES.

I just got the first draft of a long-awaited professional logo for Assigned Media and I can't stop myself from sharing it even though it's not finalized yet- it's just so, so good.

For Assigned, I wrote about the right-wing misinformation that has surrounded the Cass Report, and how Hilary Cass herself has chosen to ignore all of this misinformation, instead focusing on mischaracterizing statements by her trans critics.

Today on TWIBS, Alyssa Steinsiek brings us a real barn burner of a funny/angry screed against Jillian Michaels, a former "Biggest Loser" coach who once tortured fat people and hawked scammy diet pills and has (what else?) gone on Fox News to talk shit about trans women in athletics.

Following the NYT closely for over a year now, a picture is emerging:

Biased coverage leads back to the biases of one man, publisher A. G. Sulzberger.

The NYT is resistant to correcting errors.

The NYT relies on its reputation as the paper of record to avoid accountability.

Today on Assigned, a story in Politico, and a peek behind the curtain:

Running my own news site is amazing and fantastic and has provided incredibly opportunity for growth and learning....

...and also reinforced the idea that I really just want to be a writer, not a manager or an editor.

I'm not doing any grand search at this moment, but if you're trans and would want to be involved in an up-and-coming trans news site in a non-writing capacity (grant writing, fundraising, managing, editing) putting it out into the universe that I wouldn't hate hearing from you.

Discrimination against nonbinary people is real, and a new study from a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto is shining a light on one way it can happen.

Using a well-regarded method, researchers sent out job applications with she/her, they/them, or no pronoun attached.

There's been a big development in detransitioner Chloe Cole's lawsuit against her former gender-affirming providers.

We tapped a trans subject matter expert who's been following all the ins and outs for months to write about it, complete with a bunch of juicy screenshots of court documents, here:

I am not fond of David Brooks, but I certainly understand why he finds the Cass Report so compelling.

For cisgender people who have no pre-existing knowledge, it's really a perfect document. It is completely decorous while implying that there are too many trans people and efforts should be made to limit their numbers.

Y'all...

lots of you missed the point of what @e_urq said about defending medicalized access to gender affirming care. The medical data on gender affirming care are strong (despite what you may have heard) and there are benefits to actively defending the right to access on medical grounds (as well as on other grounds).

e_urq,
@e_urq@journa.host avatar

@ttpphd This is precisely my opinion. It's intelligible and compelling, so even though I personally prefer arguments from autonomy and self-determination I think undermining it, as Chu does, is folly.

e_urq, to trans
@e_urq@journa.host avatar

Today I've done something I've never done before and written in direct criticism of another trans writer.

Andrea Long Chu, in my opinion, is dangerously undermining the fight for access to transition in the guise of defending trans people's right to do it.

A little known fact about trans people is that transgender Americans are twice as likely to serve in the military.

This means many rely on VA healthcare for their medical needs. But politicization of trans healthcare has resulted in a lack of access to trans surgeries for vets.

The Transgender Americans Veterans Association is fighting to change that. Alyssa Steinsiek has more, for Assigned.

The language of a "medical scandal" has been increasingly used to describe the treatment of transgender youth, despite no evidence of youth having been harmed by premature or unnecessary treatments.

Today on Assigned I wrote about the medical scandal that wasn't. #journalism #mediabias #trans #transgender #science

Um, I was just told today by a senior type person in journalism that my little website has more reach "with the people that matter" than a large mainstream audience site I am also regularly published in.

...

Not sure what to make of it, and I am not at all sure it's accurate, but boy... that is... something.

e_urq,
@e_urq@journa.host avatar

For context, the one weird trick of media criticism is that if you want to have an impact ON JOURNALISM, specifically, you can punch very far above your weight class because people in the industry love reading about themselves and seeing their peers taken down a peg.
