Arc Browser

petervanderdoes,

It appears that Google is proceeding with their intention to prohibit ad/tracker blockers in Google Chrome. Since your browser is based on Chromium, will you also implement this change , , @Vivaldi , ?

my proposal on statistical inference for data visualisation wasn’t funded. What happened? Three detailed reviewers ranked it 1st among their reviews, with letter grades two As and one B, two top 10%, one 10-25%. The ARC college of “experts” shifted the score to a letter grade of E, bottom 75-100%, no explanation, no reason. I want to thank the detailed reviewers for believing in the research, and this message is to make public what happened to it in the final stage.

@visnut if someone ever needs a better proof of the system failing (or being crooked at the core?) then I’d have a hard time to find it 🥺

ro14nd,

Working now with https://arc.net/ as my default browser on macOS for more than three months, and I already can't live without it. It really reimagined the browser without sacrificing the ecosystem. My fav plugins still work: Vimium (mouseless browsing ftw), Darkreader, Readwise, 1Password. The Browser Company really nails it. So happy to see people who are so dedicated to the little details 🙇 (anyone remembers https://littlebigdetails.com/ ?)

ro14nd,

@publicvoit Because of 1Password? Because I never would have been able to convince the rest on my non-tech savvy family to use a password manager. Which would be much worse. While it's normally a tradeoff between security and convenience, in this case its not. And please don't compare Lastpass with 1Password.

You can decide to not use the cloud. Sure. You also can decide not to use a (surely tapwired) phone. Your choice.

But I'm not clear what this has to do with this post about Arc.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@ro14nd It has nothing to do with the original post. You were mentioning 1Password and I wanted to make sure that you've been warned. It seems to me that you already did the trade-off but with totally different experience, priorities and outcome as mine. Your choice, your passwords, your risk.

YMMV.

Genialne!

is doing this big launch thing today, where they will announce some BIG AMAZING NEW FEATURE and guess what, it's

some dumb «AI» sprinkled over the product instead of actual innovation.

Saying good bye to browser. After several months of trying to use it, it just doesn’t mesh with my brain. The only feature I liked as the slim border, which made presenting a site in a zoom call quite nice. Otherwise, Arc and are gone. and remain in. It appears that the Firefox made Multi-account containers add-on will do roughly what Arc profiles did. Bon chance Arc!

@j3j5@hachyderm.io avatar

@outofcontrol it used to be part of core Firefox but they moved it out because apparently it wasn't popular enough, one of those Mozilla decisions 🤷 I suffered the brief period it wasn't available

@j3j5 Interesting. Perhaps if enough people move back to Firefox they will once again roll it back into core

Today I wrote a letter to The Browser Company asking them to allow us to pay for Arc and to join the fediverse.

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

@cdevroe I don’t know what a fair price is, but I can say for sure I’d pay $50/year without complaining.

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@Chris Tack on good customer support and I'd likely pay a considerable amount more. But, obviously that number would be different for everyone.

I like the browser so much! I had to switch back to Safari for a bit and I was looking forward to get back home to Arc :)

@fourstepper I keep reporting it, they keep ignoring it.

Firefox and PrusaSlicer (that one ignores cmd-number shortcuts altogether with Czech keyboard, which is kinda ironic for a Czech company). No other apps do this.

@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

Does anyone have a link to What’s new in today? Arc seems to think that pointing to only a video where they talk about what’s new is okay. My brain does not think this.

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@PaulNakatim And I didn’t mean to sound snotty… :) It just sort of came out that way, something for me to work on.

PaulNakatim,

@outofcontrol Everything is cool! Glad you figure it out :BlobHajMlem:

raineer,

Been thinking about browsers and things...

The one thing which I do love about is outlined in green in the image below.

The fact that the webpage itself goes ALL THE WAY UP is something I love. Give me ALL the pixels to use for webbiness.

I've gotten used to left-side tabs now in , , and (especially) . I like them and I'm converted. Vivaldi lets you get really, really thin on the top, but not zero.

I don't like Arc's implementation of tabs and space, it's not my style. That left pane has so much wasted space. It's like it's made for a tablet.

@raineer How about this Command Chain for a true minimalist experience:
1️⃣ Toggle UI
2️⃣ Tab Bar
😉

cutitdown,

@raineer Have you tried auto-hiding the Arc sidebar? Then just hover on the left side or Cmd+S as needed. Or navigate via Cmd+T or Ctrl+Tab.

The #Arc browser looks fascinating. But ... it is just yet another #Chrome variant and thus does, like, nothing to preserve the open web 💔

nhanquach,

@larsmb This is exactly what I felt whenever I opened Arc
