European countries levy various taxes on car sales, depending on the weight of the vehicle and the carbon emissions. The taxes are aggressively progressive.
For a 2023 Audi Q5 40 TFSI quattro S the purchase price includes:
€ 20.410 for CO2 fee
€ 9.338 VAT which is sales tax over the "bare" price plus that CO2 fee.
@CelloMomOnCars@davidho
The CO2 price for the one-time tax for the Q5 increased in 2024 to 24.291€ and will continue to increase every year.
The F150 would be 60.000 €.

But these are side views. The perspective lines around the flat photos is distracting at best, and is less useful than a bird's eye view would be to express the vehicle footprint.
@feld@Lazarou@davidho Real cities (ones laid out before the popularity of the car) in the US aren't having such an easy time with obese trucks these days.
@tk@Lazarou@davidho but that's not the point of this comparison. I wouldn't want to drive a truck that big around a city either. That's also why the people who live in cities don't all go out and buy F-150s.
F-150 may be the best selling vehicle in America, but that doesn't mean it's popular in cities. Apartment dwellers in America are not all running to the nearest Ford dealership to buy an F-150.
@Snowshadow@mrblissett@davidho I have a compact car that seats 5, and I do trips up to 1000km in it just fine. Do Americans really drive 1000km+, including off road and carrying big loads, so regularly that a massive 4x4 pick up is necessary? Somehow I doubt it.
@Nicovel0 I use my (beloved) F-150 to tow a large travel trailer (we’re avid campers). It also seats 6 — we’re a family of 6, hence the large travel trailer (9k lbs loaded, with an extra 1k lbs of camping related gear on the truck bed). So yes, I need it. I also love it. Best vehicle I’ve ever had. Number of times I’ve been so happy to be able to haul “stuff”. 6 mountain bikes. (Many!) Bags of mulch/gravel/fertilizer for yardwork. Long pieces of lumber. Junk to dump. Love it!
@leoncowle A minivan can sit 6 people and tow plenty. No, you don't need it. If you would take a honest look around, you wohld find plenty alternatives.
@twoframesperminute Ignorance is fantastic. There isn’t a non truck that can tow what I need to tow. I did, in fact, look — incredibly extensively, actually. Had spreadsheets & all. Clearly you didn’t (and won’t). (We also have a minivan, just so you know — it cannot tow half of what I need).
@leoncowle I forgot that camping in the US isn't camping at all. It's moving house (literally). Even the heaviest EU camping trailers can be towed by a VW Golf.
@samueljohnson Golfs, among other cars, are used by police intervention units. I've definitely seen them driving by in dark grey with blacked out windows and a very well equipped gun safe in the back. If you want to get somewhere in a city and get there fast, a decked out Golf is probably the best option.
@twoframesperminute I was joking. In the US the marketing of pickup trucks is targeted at males whose choice of vehicle is in many cases an expression of their toughness. A rural macho version of the Land Rovers known as Chelsea Tractors in London.
Drove a Golf until a few weeks ago (EV now); never saw one with blacked out windows and if I had done wouldn't have seen a gun rack. 😉
@samueljohnson@twoframesperminute Instead of a gun rack, I’ll prefer to put a “yes we’re coming for your 2nd amendment!” sticker with a nice rainbow flag next to it on my truck. (I won’t, though, because the morons WILL damage my truck!)
@leoncowle@twoframesperminute It occurred to me briefly once, when tired of the seemingly obligatory requirement to have a "Couples for Christ" sticker on the rear window that I could liven things up with "Bigamists for Christ" instead.
@mrblissett No it would not. If you are a farmer or contractor then yes. If not, we truly do not need a big pick up truck....do you have any idea how many people are killed by oversized vehicles? Not to mention the weight of an EV and pollution caused from resulting tire wear.
(This said by a former F150 owner) @davidho
@Snowshadow@mrblissett@davidho contractors exist in all the world and they manage well with a reasonably sized white van (with a hood that is no taller than a sedan’s)
@sanzky@Snowshadow@mrblissett@davidho Here in my part of USA, many contractors use a Ford Transit. The Transit's hood size and angle allows a lot more visibility compared to a F-150. The Transit can be had in lengths that make it even longer than an F-150 and provide an enormous hauling capacity. There's no "contractor" reason the F-150 needs to have such a high hood.
