Choosing a travel backpack is really hard, and I still haven't found one I love, so mostly for my own reference I wrote a long post with thoughts on pretty much every travel backpack out there https://christianselig.com/2024/04/choosing-a-backpack-is-hard/

If you have other recommendations gimme

sizemo,
@sizemo@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig the Peter McKinnon branding is a bit cringe and it’s heavier than you want, but it’s a great bag. I’ve done a week in it. https://www.nomatic.com/products/camera-pack

willie,
@willie@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig You have excellent taste and requirements. Especially appreciating useable water bottle pockets! Mine are nearly the same except having to fit underneath the seat in front on me and not overhead (long story involving regional jets) is a must.

I’ve settled on 2:

Osprey Comet 30L (previous version, although new version appears to be fine): a little flimsy, not a clamshell, so packing cubes, it’s pretty awesome. (1/2)

willie,
@willie@mastodon.social avatar

Topo Designs Core Pack 25L (discontinued): I got it cheap and it’s fantastic for laptop+clothes+water bottle and not much else. The fabric is a little rough.

I hope you keep us updated on what you find next. (2/2)

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@willie Ooo, those are nice, and under the seat is a good additional requirement to make this even more fun! I'd try out the ULA Dragonfly as well

willie,
@willie@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Oh my, that Dragonfly is an interesting bag.

One bit about the Core Pack: I really think Topo screwed up not making a slightly bigger version of it with some different orientation for the pockets, and some better back mesh kind of thing.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@willie This is why I want to get into backpack making, I’m just never happy :p

alikhanab,

@christianselig Did you check r/myog? Great inspiration there.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@alikhanab Yeah! Love that spot

phneutral,
@phneutral@ruhr.social avatar

@christianselig I just scrolled roughly through the thread and haven’t seen Tasmanian Tiger: https://www.tasmaniantiger.info/en/

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@phneutral No external water bottle holder is an immediate no go for me unfortunately :(

phneutral,
@phneutral@ruhr.social avatar

@christianselig Some of the models have side pockets, like this one for example: https://www.tasmaniantiger.info/en/product/tt-modular-trooper-pack/

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@phneutral That one is over 6 lb!

ihrewerbunghier,

@christianselig Habe you looked at the Banff from Kapten & Son? I think this checks all your marks except the stowable backpack straps? https://kapten-son.com/de/p/banff-all-black-1393

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig crazy timing but Western Rise just launched a new Kickstarter today and their bag looks exactly like what you're looking for https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/westernrise-bags/voyager-travel-collection

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@joshwayne I love Western Rise's stuff. But no stowable straps, and the water bottle holder looks weird

zadr,

@christianselig i’ve got a Wandrd Prvke (well two; 21L for weekend trips, 11L for daily use) and am a fan. not sure about the 41L you referenced though

my notes: roll top vs zipping the sides down works super well for me to store stuff vs to get laptop out without opening completely. lots of small pockets to store things, and velcroable material on the side well, and the side zip pocket into main pouch makes it easy to store bulky or oddly shaped whatevers that i need along the way.

davidolrik,
@davidolrik@fosstodon.org avatar

@christianselig I love my Synik 30, I use it ad my daily carry for all my electronics and such.
It also works quite nicely for a weekend getaway 😊

https://www.tombihn.com/collections/best-sellers/products/synik-30?variant=42850654519485

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@davidolrik Love it, but no water bottle holder is an immediate no go for me ;_;

davidolrik,
@davidolrik@fosstodon.org avatar

@christianselig There is a huge pocket top center that can hold a water bottle or other beverage container.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@davidolrik Pain to access when wearing though, I don't want to have to stop and take off the backpack to access my water bottle

davidolrik,
@davidolrik@fosstodon.org avatar

@christianselig Fair point - I guess most backpacks have this problem, although the Synik has it a bit worse.
An attachment to one of the straps on the front would be preferable

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@davidolrik Most backpacks I've used just have a water bottle holder on the side, so you can just reach to your side to grab it/put it back

davidolrik,
@davidolrik@fosstodon.org avatar

@christianselig I find those hard/uncomfortable to access as well

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@davidolrik Not perfect yeah but at least possible

@gregmelnyk@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I know you’ve been given a lot of content, but please allow me to share another YT channel that is super helpful: https://youtube.com/@theperfectbag?si=AzoZVkxd9pneEbS9

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@gregmelnyk Looove him

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Kinda interesting that you use packing cubes/tech pouch for most things but also want a built in laptop/ipad holder. Why not go full modular and get a laptop sleeve like the Tom Bihn cache? Seems like most bag makers either lean towards black hole or modular. Finding one in the middle seems tricky.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@joshwayne It's mostly just easy access, I like to be able to grab the laptop quickly at the airport to watch something or get some work done, but I'm not often grabbing t-shirts or something

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I get that. Though I use the cache and I just unzip the top to get my laptop in and out on the plane. It functions like a laptop compartment but with the added benefit of removing it when I don't bring my laptop.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@joshwayne Ah fair, I find in most of the bucket style bags if I just put my laptop on top of the pile of clothes and cubes it feels weirdly aggressive on the laptop (especially when trying to close a really stuffed bag), and if I put it on the bottom it's a pain to access. I'm really hoping Tom Bihn makes a Technonaut 40 with a good water bottle holder

joshwayne, (edited )
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig That would be a good improvement. I'm a huge fan of my pilot messenger bag. The separate water bottle compartment in the middle of the bag is everything I didn't know I needed

ag,
@ag@mastodon.social avatar
christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@ag Dang, that looks pretty nice, just not a big fan of roll tops as a way of gaining extra storage

ents,
@ents@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig awesome. love my dragonfly but can totally see how its on the smaller side compared to rest

ents,
@ents@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig also, reach out to ULA, they may be willing to do a custom 40L dragonfly for you

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@ents Ooooooo

NotGoret,
@NotGoret@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I used a couple of the Peak Design bags and as mentioned already very hight quality but on the hefty side indeed. I discovered not long ago the Haize Project back packs - have a peak, you may like it 😀
Can also have a welcome -15% with code “LOKAN15” (wink wink @lokan )

https://haize-project.com/en-int

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@NotGoret @lokan I wish there were more videos of this! Looks like a spiffy bag, just scant on details. Not a super big fan of how it opens though, wish it opened all the way like a true clamshell

NotGoret,
@NotGoret@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @lokan
You can have some reviews here (sorry, it’s in French) but you can have a better idea, hopefully.

But get your point on the clame shell opening, maybe this one fit more your needs:
https://lokan.jp/2023/10/15/test-sac-a-dos-haize-project-clamshell/

https://lokan.jp/?s=Haize&searchQuerySubmit=

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@NotGoret @lokan They're super cool looking bags but I just wish they did a normal opening haha. Seems you're stuck between either a roll top or a half clamshell

lokan, (edited )
@lokan@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @NotGoret Hi guys, sorry I didn't see the messages. You have all my reviews of all the models here: https://lokan.jp/haize-project/

It’s a two third clamshell. It allows for a more reliable opening and durability of the bag (there is also a lifetime guarantee).

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@lokan @NotGoret Cheers, great reviews!

lokan,
@lokan@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Thanks mate ;-)
If you need anything, feel free to ask.

eiiot,
@eiiot@mas.to avatar

@christianselig do you think you could add images next to each backpack? Functionality is important, but I feel like pure aesthetic also matters a lot when it comes to bags.

Also great article! Love these sorts of "I spent too many hours researching this topic and now I want to write about it"

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@eiiot That would be a lot of work that maybe I will do but am not really looking to committing to at the moment haha

cruzin,
@cruzin@atx.social avatar

@christianselig I’ve got the ULA Dragonfly and love it. It’s not perfect, but for the weight it’s a phenomenal backpack.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@cruzin It looks awesome, I just really wish they made like a 35-40L version

cruzin,
@cruzin@atx.social avatar

@christianselig I've heard the Camino is their bigger Dragonfly, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. Plus it's got a big ol' logo on it. I like little to no branding personally.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@cruzin Yeah it just seems like… weirdly big too

cruzin,
@cruzin@atx.social avatar
christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@cruzin ooooooo

chasehainey,
@chasehainey@mastodon.world avatar

@christianselig I have this bag, https://www.sfbags.com/collections/bags/products/pro-executive-laptop-backpack, it’s spendy, but worth it. They make a dozen other bags I wish I also owned.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@chasehainey 25L is a bit small for travelling for over a week unfortunately. I do mention their X-Air in the post though

azizbawany,
@azizbawany@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I’m a big Nomatic fan. Have 2 of their bags: and EDC and a Weekend Trip version (rocking right now). Holds my MBP and iPad + plenty of other tech accessories.

They do make a 40L option https://www.nomatic.com/products/nomatic-travel-bag

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@azizbawany I mention them in the post! Looks super functional, just not my personal style

azizbawany,
@azizbawany@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Ah. I missed the mention . Best of luck in the search!

sankara,

I did some cursory research on Reddit ManyBaggers and OneBag forums. I assume you work from home. It's just not convenient to combine an everyday bag with a travel bag. Two entirely different use cases. I got the Tom Bihn Synik and returned it for the same reason you mentioned - no external water bottle holder. Eventually got an Alpaka Elements for my everyday bag and decided to just carry the samsonite carry-on luggage if I travel. Keeps things simple for me.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@sankara If you do the every day bag right it works pretty well. I can shove a super minimal Aer Go Pack 2 in my Osprey and it takes up next to no room, but is a nice go bag at the destination with some padding for a laptop

Mike_Enos,
@Mike_Enos@mastodon.online avatar

@christianselig of course it makes me think of this

https://xkcd.com/1952/

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@Mike_Enos Dang there really is an XKCD for everything

jwleblan,
@jwleblan@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I should have mentioned…. With my 15” MBP, iPad, office supplies (main bag) and 1 night worth of stuff in the overnight bag, it fits under ~50-75% of airplane seats (little boxes, and other crap blocks the others) 🍻

jwleblan,
@jwleblan@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I think you want the bag I use.

https://www.thebrokebackpacker.com/osprey-ozone-duplex-review/

Inside is my “laptop” bag (everyday)
Outside is my “travel” bag (trips)

Fits in most overhead bins, is separable, and fantastic! I have about fifty 1-5 day trips on it and can’t recommend it enough. Good luck 👍

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@jwleblan That's a pretty clever system. It's a bit too bulky/complex for what I’m looking for though, and I really like having the stowable straps

pykee,
@pykee@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I have quite a few of those. And I really can’t justify why but I always seem to be coming back to the peak design 45L. It’s hefty, but it does collapse down pretty well and the side access, for me at least, is just so nice

knG333,

@christianselig I took a chance on this with limited pictures and I love it for work. I haven’t traveled with it yet though, and I don’t know if it checks all of your boxes. https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/48-22-8205

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@knG333 That's a really cool one, didn't know it existed. Quite heavy though and width exceeds a lot of airlines’ carry-on requirements

brandtkurowski,
@brandtkurowski@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig this is excellent, thanks for sharing. I’m a huge fan of my Goruck for most travel, but there’s room in my life for something slightly lighter/smaller/sleeker that’s still in the “travel bag” realm. I’ll be studying your list hard before my next trip.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@brandtkurowski Lemme know what you land on!

marcmagnin,
@marcmagnin@mastodon.social avatar
christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@marcmagnin That's a slick looking bag, but on the heavier side compared to most and no stowable backpack straps :(
