Now, a good argument can be made that there is a difference between the echelon of trust-fund cretin editors who make these stupid and unfathomable decisions and the frontline reporters out doing honest work of TRYING to just file a good story about shit that actually happened in the process of an actual American fascist movement attempting to burn the fucking republic to the ground, even if the editors would edit any hint at that last part out, but you could also make the argument that the second group, if they did hew to any journalistic ethic, would wiildcat and shut the fucking thing down until Joe Kahn et al. no longer have jobs.
The New York Times institutionally supported and wittingly helped stovepipe completely fabricated horseshit to help the Bush administration make its case to gaily go do war crimes and utterly fuck up the whole of eastern Asia for decades to come, so we need not pretend that cloistered Hamptons-partygoing pseuds enabling sociopaths by-passive-voice is a new thing or a sad nadir. It's just sometimes we get that ONE chef's-kiss headline, or fucking breathtaking tin-eared Joe Kahn interview, that reminds us of just how sewage-y it is.
I thought that kind of characterization over-the-top until I read "Thinking the 20th Century" by historian Tony Judt.
He writes of being at some Hamptons-like salon and speaking against war in Iraq. He was then dressed down for his ivory-tower cluelessness by somebody with direct information from the field that contradicted him, that there was real danger in not acting against WMDs.
