Small, well-built Chinese EV called the Seagull poses a big threat to the US auto industry

The car, launched last year by Chinese automaker BYD, sells for around $12,000 in China, but drives well and is put together with craftsmanship that rivals U.S.-made electric vehicles that cost three times as much. A shorter-range version costs under $10,000.

This what most Americans need.. an affordable EV.
We should have freedom of choice 😡

kimhoar,
@kimhoar@toot.community avatar

@maddad the big 3 were bailed out and it seems they learned nothing. We should be able to get a cheap small EV. If not built by the big companies then get them wherever they are built.

grivettcarnac, to climate
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

This is not cheering for the pay workers get at Chinese EV manufacturing companies or the supply chains etc but the fact that North American car companies have made zero moves to make simple, low cost EVs is pathetic. “Flood the market” blah blah blah. There’s no free market anyway just protectionism, government subsidies and the gatekeeping to keep EVs at $50,000 a piece. Say nothing of the song and dance about getting folks into EVs

kimhoar,
@kimhoar@toot.community avatar

@grivettcarnac maybe just import small evs with good mileage. Until local producers make them. If they ever do

Little secret about datacenter water usage: they actually don't USE nearly as much as they report-- they DRAW a lot of water yes, but they'll only cycle it a few times before giving it back, either through waste pipes or other ways, otherwise you get sediment buildup in the pipes and heatexchangers. The average golf course uses far more water, and actually uses it without returning any of it

And the alternative, is to use energy-heavy AC/heatpumps, which due to public outcry, is happening more.

kimhoar,
@kimhoar@toot.community avatar

@anthropy but if they supply their OWN solar wind/energy it does not affect the grid. Correct me if I am wrong

faab64, to israel

On the morning of May 8, Israeli forces razed the entire Bedouin village of Wadi al-Khalil in the Naqab/Negev desert. The demolitions, which were carried out in order to expand the Route 6 highway, left more than 300 residents homeless.
Wadi al-Khalil is one of 35 Bedouin villages in the Naqab whose existence the Israeli authorities do not officially recognize; as a result, the villages, which are home to around 150,000 Bedouin Arab citizens of Israel, face the constant threat of demolition. Many of the villages are decades old — some even pre-date Israel’s establishment — but they are prevented from connecting to state infrastructure including water and electricity, and their residents are denied municipal services.
According to the Regional Council for the Unrecognized Bedouin Villages, Wednesday’s demolition was the largest in the Naqab for 14 years. It comes as Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir vows to crack down on what he calls “lawbreakers” and restore meshilut — literally “governance,” a euphemism for Jewish-Israeli control — to the area. Eight other unrecognized villages are currently under threat of forced eviction under the guise of urban development.
“You work eight or nine years, saving money to build a house, and then they destroy it,” Yousef Abu Issa, a 35-year-old resident, told +972. “They don’t give you another place to live, they don’t help you.”

I order some Products from the United States.

The cost is $88 CAD.

There's a fixed international shipping cost of $48 CAD. Frustrating, but that is what the shipper has, so okay.

A couple days later, I get an email from UPS asking to pay the import duty fee. The import fee is $51 CAD.

That is more than half the cost of the product itself. I'm overall paying more for shipping+import fees than for the product.

When I moved here I assumed I could buy stuff from USA cheap because of NAFTA :(

They intend to turn all schools into hellholes and your kids if you dare to let them be themselves. They intend to deport and force the poor into servitude with no or at all, including no or since only the rich deserve a decent life - their disgusting god told them so while they were here wallowing on the floor and babbling.

    Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:

    White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.

    They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.

    1. Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage

    2. Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.
