The contention that using high-filtration masks to prevent transmission of respiratory disease is “unscientific” and “lacking evidence” when we have reams of aerosol and transmission studies is a display of either unawareness/scientific illiteracy (super fixable! non-shameful!) or of an intentional disregard of the evidence for emotional or ideological reasons (common but troubling).
Serious question: when and in which contexts did calling people "individuals" emerge as a common practice, as a synonym for people? Or "an individual" for "a person"?
I ask because I'm noticing it in student writing, and I associate it with police-speak. I don't know if it's in some corners of social science or medicine too
I've got a way with the girls on my block
Try my best be a real individual
And when we go down to Smokies and rock
They line up like it's some kind of ritual
I think it crops up as a kind of countercultural term, opposing the individual vs. society. (Now that I think about it, this could also be prosecutorial / cop language, reclaimed as a sign of rebellion.)
Frankly I have no idea what this song is about, so I can't really speculate as to what the source of "individual" is here. Is it just contrasting the concept of "individual" with being multicellular & therefore made of a vast multitude of parts? Is it medical?
@GottaLaff Its only complicated for her because she can’t figure out any way to interpret the law or twist the legal proceedings in a way where Trump isn’t plainly guilty of illegally retaining top secret classified information. 🙄🤷♂️
@flexghost Republicans have no shame. Trump, the criminal is their choice for President this November. He was convicted of sexual harassment, four times indicted, he supported the overthrow of our Government and he is accused of countless other charges. Common sense would say he should be kicked to the curb. But, common sense, morality, American values of brotherhood and ethical behavior is absent from these MAGA voters. Instead, they are reveling in the gutter.
#NikkiHaley is supporting #Trump’s 2024 White House bid, she said Wednesday in her first public remarks since exiting the Republican presidential primary more than two months ago.
@GottaLaff You guys aren't going to believe this but Mr. Alito and his wife also have a pesky neighbor on Long Beach Island, NJ. They have some of the worst luck with neighbors.
@cosvak That empty narrative is infamously known as the “Tweedle-Dee, Tweedle-Dumb,” “Not a dimes worth of difference,” “Both Sides are exactly the same,” theories. The stock in trade of Nader, Greenwald, Moore, Sarandon, Stein and RFK, Jr. It’s noise that only dispirits voters. Please don’t make more of it.
@cosvak@DuncanWatson@mastodonmigration You do realize you’re just spouting really old and tired cliches, right? I had these same arguments with people a lot better than you in every election since 1976. There are reasons why 3rd parties fail here, so it’s impossible to diss something that isn’t a thing, and probably never will be. Anger with only a flourish of purpose is just outrage without aim.
@cosvak@DuncanWatson@mastodonmigration And one more thing. Everyone I have know that sounded like you, going back to Nader, always came to regret it. You’re as unique as a drop of water in a pond. Go ask them. Many if not most are quite open about their many regrets for letting idealism help the much greater of two evils get elected.
So there's always the debate between QWERTY and alphabetical keyboards, but everyone is missing the obvious way to solve this disagreement.
There's no reason the alphabet HAS to be in that order. It's arbitrary, and English would work almost completely the same if the alphabet was in a different order, you know?
So, let's just put the alphabet in QWERTY order!
It'd solve all our problems from Q to M.
Hmm, finding a vegetarian Indian dish to make for dinner from scratch (which doesn't require a lot of ingredients I don't have and time) is an interesting challenge 🤔
Thus, why Indian restaurants and grocery stores here with takeout counters are appealing, LOL.
@ai6yr@CStamp I've never tried doing Instant Pot methods with Indian food - it always seemed to take me all day (but I was also making saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, etc.) so 30 mins sounds like a win to me!
@chrisnelder@CStamp That was my initial hesitation here, and lots of GREAT suggestions from here pointed me immediately there. Which is AWESOME (since I clearly did not have all day, LOL)
Heads up to anyone using facebook or insta: you'll receive a notification about your data being used to train AIs. The opt out process is deliberately convoluted and you have to fill out a form to object. This is what I wrote in mine, and the objection was immediately registered as successful, so feel free to copy.
Masto reply bores, this is not a post on which to fart out your opinions about Meta or AI or whatever. So don't. I'm sharing helpful info for people who need it, not for you.
@isotope239@StillIRise1963 It's worked for over 7 decades! Whenever a person sets off my radar, I stay away from them, and it always works out well for me!
@isotope239@StillIRise1963 Imagine me standing there, an irate teenager, with a foot looking like an enormous gourd, while they belt out, "Instant Karma's gonna get you!"
