This might make it a little easier to burn the candle at both ends, but do you have anything with any more ends to burn? Like four? Or seven? Asking for a friend who is me.

This monster is the Fiat 2000. It was developed by Italy during the WWI, and was enormous, especially for the period.

It weighed around 44 tons, and had up 20mm of armor. It also had a turret, which was quite a novel feature at the time. Only two prototypes were built.

@TatianaIlyina@mas.to avatar

Just learned that a very promising early career scientist in my discipline has left academia, not seeing a desired career future for herself here. That company is lucky to get her. Yet, it saddens me enormously that it is often the most dynamic, brilliant, curious once, who are challenging status quo, committed to diversity and making our world a better place, who are leaving .

What are we doing wrong to make academic careers so unattractive for the best young minds?

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

@TatianaIlyina I'm planning on going into industry because academia:
demands unhealthy work life balance
Only offers short term contacts
Expects me to do service and write grants without paying me
Pays a whole lot less
Demands I complete underfunded projects
Doesn't have enough jobs for all the graduates
Expects me to move several times

I like working with students, but Im pretty sure that with a little effort, I can do that from within the company I'm looking at

Throwback: As a student, I served on the faculty search committee twice; once as an undergrad and once as a grad student. No pay, of course, but I was invited to a few paid lunches with the candidates.

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

@ScottLett even if they can find some pay, sadly I won't be able to participate. I've got a PhD thesis due right around the time they're expecting the work to ramp up. =(

Artemis201, to random
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

Work: We really value grad student opinions in our new director search. Would you like to serve on the director search committee? It'll be about 60 hours of work during the fall semester.
Me: Cool. Is there funding to cover the students' time?
Work: ....
Work: This is a service position

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

For anyone not in the know, students are limited to working 20 hours a week during the semester.
This is asking (notoriously overworked and underpaid) grad students to either spend 75% of their research time not doing research, or volunteering this time outside of work.

It's also unfair to the professional researchers who are being asked to do this without being paid, but at least the professionals have a "service" requirement as part of their yearly evaluation that this fulfills.

LOLOLOLOL

They asked me to do this on Friday afternoon.
I received an email today (tuesday) at 7:30am requiring an answer because their first meeting is today.

My dudes, that is less than 2 business days. It has been checks notes 10.5 business hours since you asked, and less than a day since you told me you weren't paying me. 💀

Charge!
Today is a day. I got all these horse dudes from the Joan of Arc board game and seeing how fast I can paint them. 16 knights and probably 8 hours so far. They have lots of small fiddly bits like saddles and armor and reins and trim that take forever. Fortunately the only thing I have left is reins, lance, and a wash
Then into my favorite bit. Basing! I'll probably do a grassy field that's been torn up by a charge. Lots of dirt clods (happy for method recs)

Literally thousands of these spiders in the leaves! Not sure what they are. They are invisible until you approach but scurry out in vast numbers as your shoes disturb the leaves and move fast in seemingly random directions. Again, hard to picture as they move so fast!

@stevenjgibbons not certain, but those could be young wolf spiders. Do you have those where you live?

Okay cool card! I just put Matzalantli The Great Door in my zombies commander deck and it is 🔥🔥🔥!
I play Gisa and Geralf as a commander, and the deck runs best when I dump all my library into the graveyard and then return the zombies to the battlefield. Up until now, the 40% of non-zombie cards (lands) were mostly useless.
Last night I played Matzalantli and it was regularly tapping for 15+ mana!

Does anybody know if there’s a traditional composite material that behaves something like fibreglass? As in fibre/fabric laid up in a binder of some sort to make a stiff material in arbitrary forms.

Paper mache is one but it’s too weak (I think, maybe there's a super version?). I'm considering things like cotton or flax in casein glue or pine resin... but I doubt it will work.

(And my last casein glue experiment stunk like rotten milk for weeks!)

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

@john I think grass-and-mud structures technically would fit the bill of a fiber layered and glued with natural binding material, but I suspect that doesn't work for your project

Oh look. Modern Horizons 3 cards are getting revealed and there's another "free spells" cycle. I'm really getting tired of this

  1. WOTC has admitted that one of the primary features of overpowered cards is free/cost reduction
  2. If they put out a new "free" cycle every summer, it really gets tiring. How long until you can build a whole (bad) deck out of free cards?
  3. Of course it's the obligatory free blue counterspell. At least the other colors have variety.

@RethinkJeff oof. Yeah 3 lands on turn 1 is a bit of a head start. Sakura-Tribe Elder also a good match.

That was a fun game. I just won a game with my Gisa and Geralf zombies deck (power lvl 6-7) against a hard control deck (power lvl 9). Despite a slow start and my opponent playing several board wipes, targeted removal, and counter spells, I managed to overcome with zombie value!
