Get into the car in the morning and drive through France into Belgium on the way to the Netherlands. And the only sign of change of country is a sign along the road that I almost missed. Nobody checked our (German) IDs and we did not need a passport.

Living in the #EU, we tend to take it for granted that we can easily cross borders. But it's an wonder, an achievement, something worth fighting for.

Finnish landslide for Left, second-largest party in EU elections.

Also some small joy to be had in the fact that notorious climate change delayist Eija-Riitta Korhola didn't get elected.

William Anders, astronaut on the Apollo 8 mission, passed away earlier today.

Anders took the iconic Earthrise photo while orbiting the Moon with Borman and Lovell. No human had ever seen an Earthrise before.

On the transmission he says "Oh my God, look at that picture over there! It's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!"

99.7% of Venture Capital money goes to people that are not Black women.

0.3% of Venture Capital goes to Black women.

The 11th circuit court cited civil rights law when it said that it is racist to stop anyone from having access to VC based on their race, and that setting aside VC for people of a given race is racist.

So they ruled against a group of Black women looking to give their own money to Black founders. For violating the civil rights. Of white men that want that 0.3% too.🙂🙃

I'm still not ready to laugh at someone going to jail, but this gentleman never having had a driver's license, ever, is wild.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FiIY5B4a_-k

He seems to have significant difficulty navigating legal forms and executive function, and making judgement calls. I'm not going to speculate on why that might be in his case, but I've helped people in similar situations do the seemingly simple things needed to keep them out of jail.

His defender should have known about the bench warrant.

Great article on the Angel Reese Caitlin Clark double standard.

https://www.sportingnews.com/us/wnba/news/angel-reese-caitlin-clark-comment-sky/51629b885f36c09d00c24ba0

And no, Caitlin Clark is not "doing this." She's not responsible for it. But she does benefit from it.

Similarly, as a man, I didn't create sexism in the tech industry. I didn't create it. But as a man, I do benefit from it. That doesn't necessarily make me sexist! But, what responsibility do I have to reduce it? Smart people disagree on this.

"ADHD creates impulse control issues and, consequently, advertising takes advantage of a disability. Ergo, ad blockers are assistive devices and interfering with their operation for commercial gain constitutes a willful violation of the ADA."

Let’s do this.

Hubble moves to single gryo mode. This moves ensures the space telescope can keep on observing well reserving/saving one of the good functioning gyros for the future. https://science.nasa.gov/missions/hubble/nasa-to-change-how-it-points-hubble-space-telescope/

A nice summary here as well of the gyros, HST pointing, and one gyro mode. Looks like HST will not be able to observe moving objects that are closer to Earth than Mars' orbit. https://science.nasa.gov/mission/hubble/observatory/design/hubble-one-gyro-mode/ #astrodon

70 years after the Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board, one of its most significant side effects − the large-scale loss of Black teachers − continues to affect America’s schools.
Before Brown, Black teachers were 35% to 50% of the teacher workforce in segregated states.
Today, Black people account for just 6.7% of America’s public K-12 teachers.

I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

sundogplanets,
@sundogplanets@mastodon.social avatar

I talked to the farmer again and apparently SpaceX is coming on Thursday to pick up the space junk. He said he'd be happy to host some journalists at his farm to record the hand-off and keep SpaceX honest.

So, I just emailed a large fraction of the local journalists who have interviewed me about this to give them a heads-up 😈
