Is it much of a wonder why so called piracy is currently making rounds once more? 🎞️ 🎮

Corporations continue to treat paying customers along the lines of some kind of criminals (piracy reminders everywhere, DRM, locked platforms - and let's not forget mandatory online connections). Continue this list?

Retro curious? NO-CD cracks are needed /w games bought 25 years ago to avoid CD-ROM requirement.

"Piracy" is almost always a service problem? Prices inflated?

What do YOU think? 🏴‍☠️ :linux: ✌️

The new Linux phone from Jolla & its benefits? ⛵ :linux:

◉Sailfish OS - the only independent commercial mobile OS
◉Sailfish is NOT 100% closed source - Jolla plans to open the remaining blobs
◉More "Linuxy" than Android; Qt / Wayland / filesystem
◉Free of Google / Apple
◉Use Android compatibility in case an :android: app is needed
◉Jolla is a Finnish company - 🇫🇮 / 🇮🇸 are considered most trustworthy nations in Europe

Most don't see the subscription model a problem - €4,99 is merely a couple cups of coffee in a restaurant (even just one cup) - and gain is a truly Google / Apple free choice with a truly Linux mobile OS ✌️

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@maxamillion

It is still very possible to use this phone / Sailfish OS in USA with local service providers.

@Kernellinux has expressed his ❤️ for Sailfish plus also provided tips on how to do this, in a podcast.

@devzero @Sturmflut

People cannot predict these things with a crystal ball right.

One can always remain in the old Google / Apple paradigm if a subscription model here REALLY is a deal breaker.

Buying this phone gets customer 1 year subscriptions included. One could check it out for an entire year / then decide whether continuing is honkydory 👍

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@turbobob @devzero

Oh you mean the price of a cup of coffee or what do you mean about making something up?

Because €4,99 really is about 2 cups of coffee in a restaurant in Europe.

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@turbobob @devzero

Right, most don't see this a problem or a deal breaker who truly seek getting rid of the ecosystem of Google and its services.

The price of this freedom therefore is merely a couple of cups of coffee, so.

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Alexmitter

Well, we will see about that. Whether those blobs are opened or not, still is not a deal breaker for lovers of this product either; Sailfish OS has gained much love in mobile phone computing area.

Sailfish OS is also a much more "normie compatible" alternative than anything else in the marginal - and close in simplicity to those mega corporations outings ✌️

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@turbobob @devzero

Sure it can be seen, now that you put it that way. "Most" means also not "absolutely everyone" - and the reasoning is naturally as explained; the aim is away from these old mega entities and the price is €4,99 :thinkhappy:

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Alexmitter

The challenges are huge for these tiny companies in the midst of relentless opposition and their billions (and THEIR abuse of people's information the get even more money).

Remember Purism and Librem 5 for instance. They still pulled it somewhat towards a more positive note.

These little players wouldn't do these things on purpose - there is not many "playgrounds" as harsh as this mobile area, right.

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Alexmitter

The bottom line is that here is this alternative now, a true choice and those who fancy such - can get to it.

The old ways and mega corpos are still there after this phone is released and one can continue with them as usual.

Don't think there are many companies with a flawless pure track record in this world about this particular business.

Things are not easy in the current situation - it is great to have these little "rebels" with a courage to challenge.

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@devzero

It can also change at one point - the point where Jolla can hold on to their ground more firmly.

It is quite possible they wouldn't do this change if it wasn't almost necessary. At least for time being; to survive more likely?

Who knows? Maybe Jolla is gone the next year and we'll have just Google and Apple (plus those margin options - not suitable at all for normies) - and no one to complain about Jolla's subscription model no more.

Harsh but true :blobthinkingeyes:

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@maxamillion @Kernellinux

A friend from Europe could send the device to you :thinkhappy:

Maybe check out what Noah J. had to say about this. He's using a Sailfish powered phone the last i know (from that podcast).

Linux,
@Linux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@pavel

Just like you said: "Was". And Jolla has plans to open yet more.

Even Canonical's Launchpad was not open originally... :thinkhappy:

Abuse of passionate gamers (& sucking 'er money off via lies) on crowdfunding platforms 💸 🤔

◉The devs are FREE to break their promises
◉Stretch goals (more money) aren't mandatory to be fulfilled
◉Fraudsters walk without any penalty

Not illegal tho? 🤞

After having people's cash for empty promises - what can these "consumers" do about it?

Shame on you Nightdive Studios ..

Each their own. It's quite likely for common good as we're starting to have these alternatives.

That said, Steam is for sure superior in many way for Linux gaming 🙂

Apparently it can be found here: https://github.com/netrisdotme/netris

One can also self host Netris - so we are dealing with nice freedoms here compared to GeForce Now, etc.

🦾 ARM / Snapdragon X Elite on laptops with Linux :linux:

Qualcomm has been working to upstream Linux support for this high-end "System on a Chip" device asset!

◉Snapdragon X Elite is a bit of a momentum for ARM powered processing
◉Upon success it'll disrupt the x86-processor (e.g. Intel dominated market)
◉One of ARM's benefits is great battery life
