I sent the story about the lack of regulation in pet food in Australia to my British -rained friend who is a vet in America, where she’s made a special study of pet food over there. She sent me her opinion on the subject, which I reproduce here in the images and the alt text

But lots of people still do. And the research into exactly what happened is ongoing. There's a theory that while nutrient x was present in the right quantities in the diet, something else in there was binding to it so the dogs didn't always absorb it properly, but we can't say we know for sure. Personally I'm a big fan of feeding diets by the large manufacturers - Hills, Royal Canin and Purina (Purina are a Nestle brand and therefore I don't want to give them money but in general they don't kill your pets). Those companies do research that goes way beyond the minimum standards and they test feed their diets to a lot of experimental animals to check for weird effects before they sell them to your pet (there is no requirement to do so and it costs more than the small companies can afford to do it). I give pet owners a couple of pieces of advice - 1) Feed from those companies 2) Feed three different foods in rotation. That way, if there's any deficiency or excess in one diet, the other one might well compensate. That's especially important if you are feeding from small manufacturers who don't do as much testing, but even if you are feeding a good diet, it's a good idea to feed a few different ones then your pet doesn't become fixated on food being one thing. We have issues sometimes when we need to change a pet's food for medical reasons and the pet refuses to eat anything new. Switching up foods regularly helps to avoid that.
