@repeatro The first time I learned about this was playing arcade roms of Turtles in Time back in the late 90s or early aughts. Originally I thought it was a hacked version of the game with tweaks or something, found out later that it was just the PAL version.

TIL Fedora is packaging a web browser app I developed for elementary OS, stopped updating over three years ago, and marked as end-of-life two years ago—yet it happily shows up in Fedora 40 if you search my name. It crashes on launch, so it doesn’t even work…

WHY??

Edit: I guess the package is being EOL'd in Fedora due to it no longer building and this thread, huzzah! My recommendation to distros: don’t package random apps and then not maintain them/communicate with upstream.

berkough,
@berkough@mastodon.social avatar

@cassidy Maybe someone likes the program and wants to use it? Or, thinks they might be able to.

berkough,
@berkough@mastodon.social avatar

@cassidy Nothing wrong with that. That's the nature of open source. As long as everyone is aware that it's not a maintained piece of software, all's fair in love and code.

berkough,
@berkough@mastodon.social avatar

@BrodieOnLinux @cassidy Disclaimers don't have to be SCARY, they can simply state when the source code was last updated, and that the older a piece of software is, the less likely it is to work as intended, or at all.

My boyfriend got a very expensive education and knows multiple people who were “inconvenient” enough for their families that they were INSTITUTIONALIZED AGAINST THEIR WILL. Is this a thing rich people are still doing? And there’s no recourse? He basically shrugged like this is normal. Is this normal??

berkough,
@berkough@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanhoulihan I guess it depends on what the institution was. Are we talking like "rehab" or a religious retreat or something??

berkough,
@berkough@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanhoulihan That's interesting. Does your boyfriend know the names of any of these places? Might be worth reading into. I'm sure there is information online about these places.

berkough,
@berkough@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanhoulihan 🤣 if they're expensive, there's probably a fancy website somewhere, a mission statement or an about us page or something.

Continuing universe I finished Fusion last night on GameBoy Advance!

It's not an easy nor simple game, there are many bosses and beating the final SA-X was one of the hardest things I did.

The main adversary is called X, and I couldn't keep out Twitter reference out of my head - weirdly it fitted just fine.

Anyways, onto new adventures!

berkough,
@berkough@mastodon.social avatar

@kotnik I had no idea you could finish the game in less than ten hours. I've never beaten it. Thinking back, I probably just never put enough time into it. I was probably turned off by the difficulty.

berkough,

@gedeonm
If I'm just doing research or compiling docs for a file I'll listen to podcasts. If I'm writing or doing something that requires a little more of my attention, I'll listen to music.

So, @darth got me thinking... I have an old Phenom II X4 965 Black lying around. And I do have an old AM3 socket mobo, I also have an old case that is missing some screws. I might dig through my junk pile and build something. Use what I already have and only buy the parts I absolutely need.

I'm imagining maybe a server that is basically a hypervisor using and that will run , , , etc. basically all the POISX OSs I want to play around with.

berkough,
@berkough@mastodon.social avatar

@darth Yeah I think so. 8GBs. They'll all be single core headless instances. I'm not going to be using Remmina to remote into a GUI or anything like that.

    Debian is my daily driver as well. Still running Bullseye, was thinking about finally upgrading to Bookworm this weekend. It works fine for gaming for me. Though most of the games I play are all on Steam which makes it easier.

    berkough,
    @berkough@mastodon.social avatar

    @toddalstrom If both companies are serious about building the next version of the web, I think they do... I'm not sure to what extent traditional business politics plays a role though. For it to work properly would probably require some contracts and basic understandings between the two companies first, even if they are both contributing to the same codebase. As far as I'm aware, atproto is heavily documented, but it isn't open source.

    berkough,
    @berkough@mastodon.social avatar

    @toddalstrom What would be the incentive to adopt atproto if you're not actively contributing to it and shaping the future of the protocol, though? At least with Activity Pub Meta can push stuff upstream and influence how other people are using it as well.

    New home server for files and stuff. It's a bit 2009 but it will do.

    berkough,
    @berkough@mastodon.social avatar

    @darth I've resisted the urge to buy a rack mount for home simply based on power consumption and noise... I still REALLY want (quite irrationally) a SPARC server. Even though I'm sure I could dust off my "Le Potato" or Raspberry Pi and use that to set up a file server.

    berkough,
    @berkough@mastodon.social avatar

    @darth 6-8, no. But there is a hat for up to 4 sata drives. I suppose you could go one step further and maybe cluster a few of Pis together?? I don't know enough about trying to set up a contiguous storage space on a cluster of machines though.

    berkough,
    @berkough@mastodon.social avatar

    @darth
    Don't let me talk you out of using a ProLiant! It's much more fun to play around on server hardware than it is a RPi 🤣. But the power consumption, heat, and noise is why I personally haven't taken the plunge.
