Just noticed two official Verge accounts (@verge and @theverge) and suspended the rest.

If you were mirroring feed by The Verge, please forward your accounts.

We’ve been lucky thus far here in South Florida. But I do NOT like this trajectory. It’s not a hurricane yet, but there’s an 80% chance it will be shortly. Damn it. November can’t get here soon enough,.

This thing in the new Slack where it filters the view by recents if you pull down in the mobile view (either intentionally or accidentally) is for the birds. There’s a lot in the Slack redesign that’s for the birds actually.

codybrom,

@gedeonm Oh god. I did this earlier on accident and had no idea what happened or how I did it.

I know search has been live for a bit, but wow. This is a massive improvement to my Mastodon experience.

codybrom,

@drahardja The biggest reason is that hashtags were only ever half a solution. Plenty of people never use them, and I couldn’t ever follow a keyword. Now, in one tap, I can find a group of beautiful nerds talking about the thing I care about. It feels like magic, again, for the first time.

Will Apple release a new MagSafe Battery Pack with a USB-C port?

codybrom,

@gruber I sure hope so. I love my current one. More than USB-C I wish it had more capacity because it only gets me about 50-60% charged. Overall it makes a great a travel MagSafe charger though and I’d love to not need a separate charging cable for it.

Interesting... downloading videos on Twitter will be a paid feature.

"Only verified [X] subscribers can download videos. Sign up for Blue to continue."

Also, isn't Blue now "X Premium"? 🤔

★ Oh to Be a Fly on the Wall During the Conversation Where Elon Musk Asks Tim Cook to Help X Corp Replace iOS as the Bedrock Everything Platform

codybrom,

@daringfireball

This morning after reading a Verge article on this, I nearly posted that Apple’s structure for creator payments (like TikTok gifts, Twitch bits, etc.) could use revisions lest creators be double exposed to revenue sharing fees.

But… @gruber convinced me. The value of App Store payments is access to its high conversion rate. In retail, manufacturers pay big money to merchandisers to put their products at eye level.

Eye level costs more, but works more, even in the App Store.

codybrom,

@gruber Strongly agree. Retail perfected that too. You can buy a cold soda at the checkout, or grab a pack of warm ones off a shelf somewhere in the aisles. Customers who want the best deal on soda will go there to get it. Costco’s whole business based on this idea! Some people are happy to choose friction over price.

I’m convinced all the creator-focused apps hyperfixated on growth want to have Apple’s cake and eat it too. Growth at any cost now looks like a zero-interest rate phenomenon.

Well... opened my Substack stats and got very confused.

Turns out one of my old essays got posted on Hacker News? Substack is saying a lot of the traffic was "direct" but this is a lot more than I'd usually get when I hadn't actually posted about the newsletter or published anything new.

That's pretty cool. There aren't many comments but here's the #hackerNews thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36781049

codybrom,

@mariyadelano That is accurate! Hacker News famously does not send referrer tags.

Looking for advice: how can I best reach out to an academic who I don't have any mutual connections with?

I just discovered that there's a professor of marketing who studies and recently published a book that's literally on the same topic as an upcoming keynote speech of mine.

It's also a topic I've already spoken about many times, I frequently write about in my newsletter and in social media posts, etc.

Do I use his university email? What do I say? How explain myself?

codybrom,

@mariyadelano @norootcause

Academics love to engage with people who read their work. They do it because they’re so interested and when someone else shares that interest they’re usually quick to open up about it.

codybrom,

@mariyadelano @norootcause

“Dear Professor Smart,

I wanted to thank you for writing your book. As an expert in this field, I do however have a follow up question I thought you might be able to help me with. [Wedge a question here].

I have a speaking engagement coming up where I’ll be covering a similar topic. Do you mind if I mention your book? Also, is there anything you’ve looked into since the release of the book that might be useful or interesting to someone like me?

Thanks and best,”

codybrom,

@ben I’m reminded of things like Auth0 and Clerk for authentication. This could be a way to manage and bootstrap AP for a site with its own dashboard (and maybe even mobile app) separate of your actual site.

I even. Think pricing is per activity pub user. One for free, and then some kind of other cost that scales up to an enterprise level at the high end.

But, yeah. I love it and I need it. I’ve been looking for something that even remotely resembled it.

What’s the vibe on here about Threads and Mosseri’s comments about ActivityPub yesterday?

codybrom,

@alexeheath Lot of people in disbelief. They think it’s never gonna happen. It’s happening.

codybrom,

@Nour @alexeheath

It’s shown as part of the onboarding, it’s on the website when you click on the box next to a username and they KEEP TALKING ABOUT IT. It would be insane for them to go to this much effort and not do it. I think people are desperately trying to manifest a different reality because it’s literally a top priority for Meta and it WILL affect the fediverse.

In recent weeks some, but not all, of the information about that fired up the community here was based on rumors, guesses and speculation. Tomorrow, we'll finally learn the truth.

I completely support anyone’s decision to defederate, block or otherwise not interact with that platform. But if you do, I implore you do so because of truthful statements and reporting and not misinformation based on fear.

@stux I'm sad that people aren't even willing to give it a chance. Blocking the instance won't stop Meta from collecting data in other ways but it will stop me from being able to stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues.

Just finished doing a little rebrand of my newsletter. Updated the logo, cover, description, and most exciting of all... a custom domain!

And now I'm redirecting people from my agency website to sign up for this newsletter. There was no point in having two email lists, I didn't use the other one really.

Here's the pretty new URL for ya:

I went through my list of followed accounts and scrolled to the bottom to find my real-life friends who joined over a decade ago like me. Maybe 1 out of 10 had even posted in the last year, and only a 1-2 since Elon took over.

My number of followers feels very similar to looking at my number of MySpace friends in 2012. Everyone moved on but the accounts remained.
