Now working w/ UC Berkeley AI researchers, Alison Gopnik is foremost authority on very young child cognition

"These models are neither truly intelligent agents nor deceptively dumb. Intelligence and agency are the wrong categories for understanding them.

Instead, these AI systems are what we might call cultural technologies, like writing, print, libraries, internet search engines or even language itself."

I included a brief history of cultural technologies in "Mind Amplifiers" to emphasize to designers of that computer-based thinking and communicating technology is in a lineage that goes from speech and writing through print and what McLuhan called "electric technologies."

I started an online community with web-based forums in 1998. Initial idea was to have conversations about everything, in a forum where assholes could be expelled. We had meetups in San Francisco, Memphis, Amsterdam with dozens of people. The rise of social media diminished the population, and those who have stuck with it are, well, 26 years older. So I don't think it would appeal to younger folks, but anybody is welcome to try.

"The WELL is an ad-free internet forum and social network founded in 1985, long before the likes of Reddit or 4Chan. WIRED called it “the world’s most influential online community,” and it shows how home-grown user culture can shape a platform as much as formal governance. "

The WELL isn't what it was before Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, but it's still a place for lively, intelligent and mostly civil conversation about everything from parenting to technology, sports, books -- you name it.

The last paragraph that somewhat broke https://mastodon.social/@setto@s.basspistol.org s heart:

If electronic democracy is to succeed, however, in the face of all the obstacles, activists must do more than avoid mistakes. Those who would use computer networks as political tools must go forward and actively apply their theories to more and different kinds of communities. If there is a last good hope, a bulwark against the hyper-reality of Baudrillard or Forster, it will come from a new way of looking at technology

Instead of falling under the spell of a sales pitch, or rejecting new technologies as instruments of illusion, we need to look closely at new technologies and ask how they can help build stronger, more humane communities--and ask how they might be obstacles to that goal.

The late 1990s may eventually be seen in retrospect as a narrow window of historical opportunity, when people either acted or failed to act effectively to regain control over communications technologies. Armed with knowledge, guided by a clear, human-centered vision, governed by a commitment to civil discourse, we the citizens hold the key levers at a pivotal time. What happens next is largely up to us.

I wonder if those who cite me as an example of uncritical technoutopian enthusiasm ever read the final chapter of my 1992 book, The Virtual Community

Disinformocracy

"Virtual communities could help citizens revitalize democracy, or they could be luring us into an attractively packaged substitute for democratic discourse. "

@mrcompletely Very much so. And I learned to be more critical from my early critics.

Curation as Digital Literacy Practice

"Digital curation therefore is not just about finding relevant material, although that is a significant part of it, but is also about creating a specific and unique experience by utilising the resulting materials which then become contextualised within a new space. "

are practices as well as software

IFTF.org & I tried to catalyze an interdiscipline of science by creating summaries of work in diff disciplines, so a computer scientist could see converging work in economics, a biologist could see convergence from game theory, etc. One fundamental of human cooperation is the web of tacit agreements & exchanges known as "social capital" A summary of one of the most important studies of the ways human capital is created and used:

Making Democracy Work

We designed an interface to the database of cooperation-related summaries -- a circular, clickable map. Hovering over a node would pop up a one paragraph summary, clicking a node would open the summary.

hrheingold,
@hrheingold@mastodon.social avatar

We included multimedia in our cooperation interdiscipline map. We convened a seminar at Stanford. Jimmy Wales was one of our speakers (he stayed in the loft in my studio and after his lecture I dropped him off at Google). Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate the actual video.

The Shape of the Universe, Whole Earth Review, Fall 1993

"If you are fortunate enough to share a neighborhood with a leafy elm, a gnarly oak, a soaring redwood, take another look at its silhouette against the sky. That self-similar 4-D explosion of branching branches is a clue to a cosmic riddle or two and a key concept in fields as unrelated as vascular surgery and software design.

The Buddha knew this, and so do neurologists, database programmers, and mythologists. "
