Spirit animal: The Doctor

I believe society is a thing built by the powerless to keep the powerful in check, and that politics & policy failing to reflect this are incomplete at best.

Enjoy overanalyzing pop culture and building weird, practical and/or funny sh*t. Also, playing guitar.

I'm argumentative. This doesn't mean I hate you, or that I need to "win", or that I don't respect your position - but if you can't take an argument, don't engage.

Police in Brussels have started using bait bikes, which are GPS tracked bikes that when stolen lead the police to the criminals.

I look forward to the evaluation of this project, as so many cities are plagued by bike theft. Could this be the remedy?

(New story from January this year)

https://www.brusselstimes.com/871521/police-can-make-unlimited-use-of-bait-bikes-to-track-down-thieves

jwcph,
@jwcph@norrebro.space avatar

@randahl I've thought about this concept, not least through having a number of nice bikes stolen - I think the only way we can get the police to act on this is if many bikes are GPS tracked.

Just one tracked bike is going to give too many false positives (e.g. the Po moving out in force for a "single use" theft) but if a dozen trackers on bikes reported as stolen are all moving together at speed down the highway towards the border/next town? Now there's a possible catch.

It’s easy not to regulate your behavior or your emotions because fuck everyone else that’s why. It’s easy to just go through life the way your parents told you to and hate anyone who lives differently..."

@zdl @Catvalente Well sure, you can say that, but those arguments are cop-outs, escape hatches from having to deal with evil - or in other words, easy. Like those perpetrating the evil, this is bystanders also choosing the path of least effort.

All it takes is for good people to do nothing, but the problem is, doing nothing always going to be easier than doing something. Are good people doing nothing still good, or are they really just passive agents of the same evil...?

@NatureMC @baldur @futurebird I think we're talking about very different things as if they're the same here. Use an AI for what is essentially a deepfake can be very hard to spot because the engine just finds the person in question & use actual pics of them - but more "generic" scenes tend to get more of a style to them (because the engine basically averages out a lot of imagery to get there...

So, I went ahead & acquired this cute - and very cheap - little looper pedal 😊 just got it today and I can already say that it's going to be a fun & useful practice tool.

I should note that it doesn't sound like it has the advertised true bypass - it definitely changes the sound, killing some of the bottom & making it a bit tinny. Not gonna have it in my signal chain permanently.

Otherwise, though, works as advertised & I know I'm going to like having it.

jwcph,
@jwcph@norrebro.space avatar

@patrickworld @eyesquash As far as I can tell, the simplest setup is to just have the looper at the end of your signal chain, right before the amp, so that you can loop layers with different effects.

I have a volume pedal in my setup which I think might come in handy; the level knob on the looper affects not just the loop but also the through signal, but with the volume pedal I can boost the solo level when playing over the loop 😁

I'd only add that in addition to showing certain people certain things to get them to act a certain way, these systems also afford the ability to manage what not to show those people - basically, keeping their bubble tidy.

Also, quick question: I've noticed that you never set links to "open in a new window/tab" & since I know you know what you're doing, I was wondering why you choose to do this? I always set links to "new window/tab" based on my own behavior of reflexively closing windows but I don't presume to be right that this is how it should be done 😁

Carne thisclose to severing my fingertip this afternoon. Instead I merely cleanly sliced off about a quarter of the fingernail on my middle finger and a tiny bit of the meat underneath. Lots of blood but no real harm done (and it didn't even really hurt).

Anyway, the takeaway here is Sharp Knives are Sharp and I should really be more careful.

jwcph,

@etherdiver Evolution equipped us with nails specifically to keep us from slicing off fingertips. At least that's my theory, based on how many times I've done this exact thing.

  • and yes, it bleeds a loot; once I did it & then violently shook my hand in pain, as you do, it left a neat line of blood spatter across the entire kitchen ceiling 😬

I actually happen to think the business potential for Content™️ is wildly overrated; it's based singularly on the idea of distributing ads to the eyeballs consuming it & that's, uh, let's just say "not popular" & thus, speaking as a marketer, not effective - the return on investment for this is fart noise for most businesses & it only seems to be getting worse.

Sadly this probably won't stop content mills from flooding the 'net anytime soon...

Great quote from the The Vergecast about AI (in a product review of an AI device that queries other AIs as needed):

David Piece explains that after getting an answer from the device he has to get his phone and google the results to make sure it is accurate - "It completely defeats the purpose. We are so far away from these things being reliably honest, and reliably fast, and reliably useful that it is like 'what's the point?'"

@sapphire @Urban_Hermit Again: Pretty factual. Did it report back the correct lines, and nothing else? Did it obey you when you told it to change nothing? As soon as you're asking something that the thing could "hallucinate" - i.e. lie - about, you're going to have to re-check everything.

For the record, the #business model of #LateStageCapitalism doesn't work.

They™️ are hard at work cutting humans out of the production loop in order to remove the "Salaries" line item from the expences sheet & be able to offer their products to the #market at lower cost.

But... what market?

If They™️ own all production & don't pay anyone for their work, how are people supposed to afford anything, let alone frivolous & idiotic convenience products, a.k.a. 95% of Silicon Valley's output?
