@RickiTarr Queen. The human-hosted xenomorphs are quite badass and intimidating, but fungus-collective-hosted xenomorphs are almost comical. Also, emergence doesn't kill the host, which may actually be the important part.

Vader would probably Force-levitate me to conk someone in their ineffectual-but-still-enormous helmet.

The correct response is "Get that shit outta here. NSAIDs don't help at all with this. We're gonna do the dishes without being asked, then get out of the house, get some psilocybin mushrooms, and stay away until they text us. When someone discovers that they are invisible and inaudible, but that people will interact with a puppet as though it were a real person, or treat an AI model like a real person, what do you suppose that does to the real person?

I totally understand why someone might want to follow the hand all the way inside, and live in the puppet shell forever.

This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

I serve on my HOA and our President just called me and essentially cussed me out because I'm having a Q&A for people who want to run to be on the board because, in her words, "You could have just told people to come to me" and "You didnt ask for anyone else's input" despite the fact that I did and she just never responded to my email about the idea.

@speculater @BlackAzizAnansi I'll only pay market price to not be in an HOA, but I won't make an offer on an HOA property at all, so... supply and demand. I need my bees, flies, RF antennas, and wheelie bins out whenever. And to paint my doors any color I like. And an animatronic Ice Cube singing FTP on a motion trigger. That last one is aspirational, but seems like HOA wouldn't allow it.

And, whatever most programmers say about them, HTML and CSS are absolutely much more accessible to learn than JS ever has been or will be

@baldur JS and CSS are enhancements, not replacements.

Worst of all are the sites that require JS to display a static text article or blog entry. Why do you need a client-side script to replace the work your HTTP daemon could be doing on the server with less bandwidth and fewer compute cycles?

It can't happen here? It already did! Ask folks old enough to remember it, what they did about it. If they weren't black people or Jewish people, they probably cheered it on.

It happened by executive (FDR) order, and was upheld by that SCotUS.

@Gustodon I use a lot of Foil Hat, to be sure, but just because I consume a pareidolia-enhancing drug to help me crank out wild and unsubstantiated conspiracy theories by the barrel, that doesn't mean state-level actors don't routinely compromise vehicle electronics and human assets to generate political advantage at critical moments.

My standing opinion is that high-level state executives have security professionals employed to eliminate normal accidents.

@RickiTarr @jwcph @done Only relevant for matchmaking purposes, and mostly from when personal ads charged by number of words. Now you can have an entire web page describing what you are and what you're looking for.

I think some people are just salty because they aren't finding what they want, and they're blaming everyone else for not being that. And also for not wanting to be that. Which seems like jealous stupidity, a thing most people don't want in their romance.

Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

@memphismary @sillyCoelophysis @jhooper @RickiTarr Last time around, the prospective landlord wanted me to pay the CRA's fee for their credit check of me. And then told me, when I asked, they would not provide a copy of said report if they denied me after seeing it. I told them that would violate federal law. They told me, and I quote, "fuck you I hope you die homeless".

So yeah, a "bad landlord" list would be great.

@memphismary @sillyCoelophysis @jhooper @RickiTarr If a prospective landlord gets big mad when you do nothing more than telling them what the law is governing a proposed transaction, to me that is a red flag that they intend to violate one or more laws that they already know about, and don't want to be accountable for it. They sure do know plenty about eviction and whatnot. If they're getting into the credit reporting business too, they should probably self-educate.

@janettespeyer If all you have is money, and all you want is more of it, the best way to help the Fediverse is by buying stock in X, Meta, and Alphabet, then clamoring loudly for better monetization.

Donors can help the Fediverse by paying for hosting and bandwidth, getting a solid return paid in gratitude and community.
