I wear too many hats. I love theatre, data, science, and connecting people. Let's make a sustainable future that isn't built on the assumptions of the past.

He/him. I live in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa.

My posts reflect no opinion but my own.

When I share other people's posts, it's an interesting perspective worth reflecting on, but I don't necessarily agree.

I’m pretty new to , and I have something of an question. I’m using a widely available app (free, may not be the best one, Family Tree) and there’s spots for “Sources” and “Memories.” Now, I’ve found things in my research that is less than flattering about non-direct ancestors, some have living descendants. Do I post it, or keep it to myself?

mark,

@caity Depends how far back. If their children are still alive, maybe it's too soon. Otherwise, history deserves to be documented. Just my opinion. I'm no expert.

Bard, tell me a completely fictional bedtime story.

@thoughtfulnz Intriguing choice of subject matter on Bard's part. It's like they're a bit preoccupied on one thing…

It's no secret that I'm looking at federated crowdfunding as a means to both help servers and creatives.

@atomicpoet Awesome!

I wish I could afford to go part-time. I'm so driven by all the community-focused and governance work I'm doing, but it doesn't pay the bills and there aren't enough hours in the day.

No no no, we don't need even more convoluted alternatives to a capital gains ! Essentially, this proposal aims to slightly reduce the spending power of the ultra wealthy at the shops. I don't see it changing the fundamental, growing imbalance between those who have lots of assets and those who don't. https://i.stuff.co.nz/business/opinion-analysis/131919854/why-raising-gst-could-be-the-easiest-way-to-make-the-rich-pay-more-tax

mark,

@heyrochelle The proposal is to offset the increase in GST with an increase in benefits and a decrease in income tax, to make it cost-neutral for low-to-medium-income households, but I still think it's a dumb idea.

AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton says AI is a new form of intelligence unlike our own. Have we been getting it wrong this whole time?
Hinton’s argument is nuanced. While he does think AI has the capacity to become smarter than humans, he also proposes it should be thought of as an altogether different form of intelligence to our own.

Maybe, but it's something we usually struggle with.

@thoughtfulnz So our less-than-zero excess mortality in the early stages of the pandemic is being continually chipped away at by a greater-than-zero excess mortality now?

We have temporarily limited mastodon.social to combat extreme crypto bot spam.

Until the spam flood has ended, and possibly until mastodon.social moderators find a way to prevent this happening in the future, we will keep the limit.

Until then, mentions and DMs coming from accounts you're not following there will not reach your account, follow them to receive these again, we apologise for the inconvenience, as we don't want to cause much more of it.

    mark,

@mods Any word on when this will change? It's less than ideal having threads truncated because some of the participants are on Mastodon's most popular instance.

How do I get YouTube to stop recommending a channel? It's autoplaying a dancer who dances to the same song in every video. Good for her, but it's not my thing to see it over and over. I tried blocking them. I guess I gotta hit dislike? It seems mean.

    mark,

@Br3nda No mute feature? If only these services were federated and we could consume on our own terms.

Calling all my friends who wish they could live in the city centre but can't afford to! Consider putting in a submission in support of the council's proposal to increase height limits – due by Friday 12 May. I worry that submissions will be dominated by wealthier people who can already afford to live in their suburb of choice.

The quick option is to submit using Generation Zero's tool at https://www.generationzero.org/ccc_pc14 (there's also lots of useful information to consider if you want to write your own submission).

The longer option is to read the information at https://ccc.govt.nz/the-council/haveyoursay/show/531 and write your own submission (consider also submitting on the heritage proposal at https://ccc.govt.nz/the-council/haveyoursay/show/532).

(Post updated to reflect that the deadline was this morning extended to Friday 12 May: https://newsline.ccc.govt.nz/news/story/extra-time-for-plan-changes-consultation)

    #Ōtautahi

    mark,

I'm getting very caught up in the details of the proposed District Plan changes. They use a lot of phrases without defining them, which is making it very hard to understand which considerations would apply for high-rise buildings in my neighbourhood.

When I first came back to Mastodon I logged into my original .social account from 2016 or whatever and I had to spend so much time setting up filters to not have every timeline just be porn and spambots that I cannot imagine suggesting a new user join there.

    mark,

@lori @strypey Indeed. I wonder if this focus on recruiting people to “Mastodon” or “the Fediverse” is misguided. Perhaps we will have more success recruiting people to small online communities that feel relevant to them – either because of a geographic connection or a shared interest or lived experience. The branding would feel relevant and local, not lofty and distant. Federation is just the added bonus that allows a community to be connected to the wider world and not exist in isolation – an underlying protocol which seems like a no-brainer to us but isn't a drawcard to the average user.

    mark,

@strypey Yeah there must be a balance somewhere. “Come join our small community, but don't worry, we're not recluses. We're connected to many other communities.” @lori
