How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr
In Jan 2020 my kidneys failed.

Since then, I've been almost entirely isolated at home, since the root cause was lupus, and my immune system is still being rebuilt. COVID would kill me.

I have never been happier.

I get my social interaction through the internet and with my husband. I game a bit - MMOs - so I interact with other people in a virtual environment as well as on forums, chat, or Mastodon.

I love it.

This works for me. I don't WANT to go out and deal with people at all.

I’m no fan of libertarians, but I do appreciate the way they treated that fucking criminal at the rally.

@StillIRise1963
Yes, amen!

Libertarians suck, yes, but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Those boos were a joy to see, despite who was doing the booing.

Driving him out of there would have been better, not letting him speak at all would have been best. But they're libertarians, I don't expect much from people who really don't understand how civilization works and expects everyone else to cater to their needs.

Besides switching to LINUX (which I've tried a couple of times and failed at), how do I permanently turn off copilot and any other snooping AI "features" from Windows?

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-11-recall-ai-feature-will-record-everything-you-do-on-your-pc/

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

@dilmandila
In the past, it's been my PC gaming habit that ran headfirst into LINUX. I know Steam runs on it now, but it didn't then.

It might well be time to try again. sigh

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

@dilmandila
Yeah, Wine didn't work well the last time I tried, which was years ago now. But I could do a lot... just not everything I wanted to do.

So, yeah, like I said, I can probably make the move now. I'm just so old it makes me tired just thinking of it. I'd rather Windows just didn't get any crappier than it already is.

I'm taking a look at linuxmint, as that might be enough to sell me on a move. We'll see.

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

@stooovie @dilmandila
Yeah, I'm beginning to think that's the only option. I feel like we're losing the battle against enshittification.

For Americans looking at people posting in Celsius temperatures: don't try to convert, just remember this...

Zero is freezing,
Ten is not.
Twenty is warm and
Thirty is hot
(And forty is DAMNED hot)

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

@cobweb
Either way works.

The trouble with Americans is that they teach us to convert, so students grow up thinking it's all about math, when really it's just about understanding a different measuring system.

If I were to teach metric to Americans, I'd start by teaching how tall people are in meters, how long a car is, how big a phone is... so on. I would not start with the conversions, which is where pretty much every American school curriculum starts.

@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

I really didn't expect this little odd thought of a note to take off. Thank you to folks who favorited and boosted it.

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

One thing...

Besides missing the point of my post entirely, people who insist on giving me conversion information: Why is it more important to you to convert the numbers than to understand them?

Just curious.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr
Yakima Valley, Washington state

Pros:
Fresh food is easy to get, as there are farms everywhere.
Lots of people are bilingual.
It's sunny most of the time.
Most people tend to be friendly to strangers.

Cons:
Very red politically.
Racism is rampant.
Gang activity is high, and deadly.
Summers are really hot.
Cattle and dairy farms produce... interesting smells.
Almost no transit to speak of.
People aren't friendly if they decide you are the "other".
Future water supply is uncertain.

@GottaLaff
I find it astounding that anyone can defend Hicks. She was a crucial part of the orange stain's machinery, and she clearly isn't the slightest bit remorseful about it - still praising him and upset about being forced to testify against him.

It's people like her that make it possible for tyrants to take over.

She may not seem like a monster, but people like her are the epitome of what it takes to destroy society.

Dear white women who vote for fascists, is it not evident to you that they don’t like you EITHER?🤔

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

@StillIRise1963
I'm absolutely terrified of fascism taking over. As a white woman who has witnessed what the patriarchy wants for me, I'm all too aware of what's going to happen to me and other white women if fascism grips us tighter.

I genuinely cannot believe that others can't see it as clearly. But I talk to them, and they repeat the Faux News talking points like it was a mantra. They've been brainwashed.

It's terrifying.

Sometimes I fear we've already lost.

Trans people are "forever patients"?

So is literally everyone!

Fuck off.

realtegan,
@realtegan@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr
Ableist crap.

I was a child when I didn't take pills. I became a teen and needed pills to keep the chemically caused depression from taking over my mind and destroying my life.

Forever a patient!

The cysts in my ovaries caused intense pain, so I took hormones to prevent them from growing.

Forever a patient!

Now I take a dozen pills a day to keep my immune system from killing my kidneys and heart.

Forever a patient!

If you aren't already a forever patient, you will be someday.
